As my collection increases I have created several categories for my games so I can find them quickly. But sometimes I have trouble deciding what game belongs in which category. And some games could be in two or three categories. So I'm asking you all that have tons of games what kind of categories do you have for your collection?

Here are my current categories:
Controller (for games that can use a controller)
FPS (first person shooter)
Meh (games I don't like)
Misc (games I haven't categorized yet or can't decide)
Platformer
Puzzle
Racing
Rogue-Like
RPG
Space (anything space including shmups and 4x)
Tower Defense
Turn-Based Strategy

The big problem I have is with Platformer and Puzzle. Especially platfomers, because there are traditional platformers like old-school Sonic, Mega Man, etc., but then there are also puzzle platformers that often take place in just one room and are not side-scrolling, such as Escape Goat.

And with the Puzzle category there are casual puzzle games like Bejeweled and Angry Birds but then there are ones that have a story to them like Puzzle Quest.

What do you guys do?

Interesting this topic pops up, as I recently spent a good hour + organizing mine.

Games that I'm currently playing/have installed get marked as Favorites first. When I get a new game, I let it languish under the default "Games" until I decide whether to play it or backlog it.

Other than that, game series' that have at least 3 titles get their own category (i.e. Assassins Creed), and I have some broad categories for others. I probably will eventually get more anal and break it down further to platforming and such, but as of now it looks like this. Can't see all the categories I have, but general idea.

Just two categories in my Steam Library: "Done" and "Not Done". Clean and simple! Why do people have to be so obsessive about categorizing?

...

...

Well, and I keep this Excel sheet with all 8000+ games that have ever been released on GOG, Steam or reviewed on Gamespot, PC Gamer, Gamespy or Eurogamer, which contains names, developers, publishers, genre, release date, game series, review scores, if I own it, if and when I finished it, if it is installed or not, in what computer, which shop has it, position in my Steam wishlist, if it supports a controller or not, and if my wife would possibly maybe enjoy playing it with me...

Clean and simple. :(

Completing [games I intend to complete (all achievements, endings, etc.), max of three listed at a time]
Focused [games I'm currently playing and very focused on, but not necessarily trying for completion so much as just finishing them, max of three listed at a time]
Over Avg Cost Under Avg Hours [requires that you know what the average cost of one game in your library is (I use Gauge Powered)]
Random [an assortment of titles I'm likely to play at random]
Alpha #
Alpha A
Alpha B
... [alphabetically sorted, # and A-Z -- also helpful for placing game titles like "Final Doom" under D for "Doom" instead of F for "Final"]
Alpha Z
Demo [demos]
Dev Double Fine [trying out a very small number of "Dev" categories for developers with a consistent feel to all of their games]
Dev Telltale Games
Early and Test Versions [I'll probably get rid of this category in the wake of all the Early Access cruft]
Emulators ["SEGA Genesis & Mega Drive Classics"; also sometimes MAME when I have that installed]
Free [a place to categorize F2P titles that disappear from the list when you uninstall them]
Other [Saints Row and Dragon Age character creators, PC Gamer, Indie Game: The Movie, and the Portal 2 Sixense Perceptual Pack]
Games [(automatic) - everything I haven't catalogued, calculated, and categorized yet! -- also Steam Free Weekend titles show up here]

  • General games I do not intend to play in the foreseeable future (200+ games)
  • Priority games, I plan to play but I don't have time for (70-80 games)
  • Early Access games I don't really play them, only buy them to support development. (20 games)
  • Utter Junk: rubbish games I won't (can't) play, also junk like prototypes, betas, GTA Linux versions (20-30)
  • Bucket List: a small list of amazing, high rated games which can be beaten in less than 10 hours. (like Brothers a Tale of Two Sons)
  • Finished Games: self-explanatory

Also I usually only view the installed games in Steam, so it's less cluttered :)

I only have 2 main categories:

ALL STAR (around 4 game here :) ) and
FAVORITES (EVERY other game is here :D :D)
(plus I have a category for betas, promos, prototypes, etc. - the "junk" basically)

Thinking about making cute little categories then organizing my games and stuff is nice but totally not worth the time! It would take me ages to do it! :D So I just shove everything into favorites. :O

  1. Category for most games, the default one. These ones I'm not currently playing and haven't tried yet.
  2. Category for games I'm playing at the moment, unfinished games, demos to try out soon etc.
  3. Category for games I have finished but intend to go back to or replay them.
  4. Category for games I have finished and and I don't intend to play again and for games I haven't liked.
  5. Category for multiplayer games.

I would love a system where things can be in multiple categories, and nested categories. In the meantime:
Achievement Games
All Achievements Found
All Cards Found
Trading Cards
Nothing Special (not achievements, nor cards)
Games from others - no uninstall (one small game from each person I have Family Sharing set up with, that none of the others have. if our connection disappears, which has happened, i can use the installed game to re-request access, instead of needing to log in as them and such again)

I put even games received through family sharing into these categories (well, not the cards category).

I don't have many games but I just use fav's, rest of the games, and a newly added section labeled "trash" thanks to the suggestion on steamgifts.
I I think it'd be the same regardless of how many games I have though seeing as I would add them into my favs if they were really good and I'm still playing them. See Dota, Counterstrike, etc.

My sort is simple. If I haven't played it, I mark it as a favourite. Once I play it enough to know what the game is like, I remove the favourite label.

For the rest of my games I rely on remembering the games name.
