It's that special month, once again, where we Muslims get busy with fasting, praying, and doing good deeds. I would like to wish all of my Brothers and Sisters in Islam a blessed Ramadhaan, and may Allah (AWJ) increase us in all that is good. Aameen! D

I wish you all a nice Ramadhaan.

Also, if someone feels like spending the time to tell me, i would like to know what you usually do during this special month. I know some things, but would like to know a little bit more, i like to understand things.

Greetings from a respectful, curious atheist.

Well, there's a lot to explain, but I can try to outline some of it for you.

  • If possible, we wake early and eat and drink before first light comes. This time is also one of prayer and reflection.
  • From first light until after the sun sets, we fast. No food, no drink, no sex. Also, deeds that are forbidden during "normal" days are especially shunned during fasting, so you are on your best behavior all day.
  • It is common practice to read one thirtieth of the Qur'an each day so that you can finish all of it by month's end.
  • Any good deeds performed in Ramadhaan garner additional reward, so we try to do as many good deeds as we can.
  • Anyone who can manage it will try to make the lesser pilgrimage (Umrah) during Ramadhaan due to increased reward.
  • At the end of the day, we break our fast, so that is a good opportunity for celebration (dinner parties are common).
  • After the night prayer, we pray additional (formal) prayers, and make additional supplication.

Different cultures have other practices connected to fasting and breaking the fast. At the end of the month, we have Eidul Fitr (which lasts three days), but that is another subject.

I plan to attend Eid prayer, to help out with the cleanup, and to call my parents.

Have a peaceful and reflective Ramadhan! I hope you're gentle with yourself during your fast - it can be hard on your body in the heat of the day.
