Which of the following best describes your Fallout gaming history pre-Fallout 4?
I've never played it. Sunk in a couple of hours in NV but just couldn't get into the game.

What about fallout tactics: brotherhood of steel?
I am still playing F2 to this day?

I just wish the series would go back to 1/2 format. I was very disappointed by 3 and never played Vegas because of that (although I do own it..I collect). The series lost so much depth with the jump to 3's format.

Obsidian's writing team breathed new life into the series with New Vegas. You are missing out by ignoring Fallout: New Vegas, including all the DLC. I agree that 3 was a downgrade and a complete dumbing down of the series, but it had great atmosphere and at least after Brian Fargo's facilitation of the sale of the Fallout IP from bankrupt Interplay, Bethesda saved the series. I am expecting more dumbing down in 4, but hopefully, there will be a good followup like there was to 3.

I own all the DLC as well. After your comment I will give New Vegas a spin. Somehow I missed that Obsidian was behind it. Had I seen that I would have tried it at least. If there's more dumbing down in 4 it means they decided it's more profitable that way and I doubt they'll follow up. Unfortunately it seems that dumbing down games is the way to go profit-wise as it opens up the title to a larger market. Call me a cynic but it's the human condition.. Still, I also prefer the old gameplay format.. I may be an old fart, close to 40 now, and maybe it's because of that but I like tactical and turn-based gameplay much better. I guess it's not the age in itself as I always preferred it that way..maybe it's the way we grew up with these games.. I'll go as far as Infinity engine space-pause gameplay (Pillars of Eternity was awesome..I wish they start making games like this again..a lot more). More room for thought and intelligence instead of twitch action. Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy a FPS/TPS game every now and then but I like my RPGs the old school way. Story-rich, deep character design/customization (designing characters is half the fun for me), complex rulesets and intelligent/strategic combat gameplay. While I like pretty graphics as much as the next guy, they are the least important factor in my book.

Heh you guys have me hooked on trying it already..I already own it and the DLCs for my collection I got nothing to lose. If the writing comes closer to the original games it will be worth it anyhow. 1+2 are in my special disc case. The one were I store my old time favourites. For extra protection. Although I also bought them again on Steam (and I don't have money to spare heh)..that's how much I liked the originals.

My first Fallout was Brotherhood of Steel on PS2. Why didn't you include that and Tactics? Seriously, they were still part of the series, even if you dislike them.
Comment has been collapsed.
Tactics is not an RPG, but a tactical strategy combat game, and a good one at that. The Brotherhood of Steel game was considered so bad, most fans of the series like to pretend it doesn't exist. Plus, including those two additions would have made the options an even bigger nightmare -- too many permutations. This poll is only about the four main RPGs in the Fallout series pre-FO4 as that is what interests me.

The snark is real! A lot of people like to hate on FO3, but I'm grateful to Bethesda for breathing new life into the series. It is an RPG since there are choices with consequences: You can blow up Megaton or save it; You can help Tenpenny or the ghouls; You can help the Synth or turn him in and he is decommissioned, etc. It's just not the best written one, and probably the worst writing-wise of the main series. I am hoping FO4 is a tad more nuanced. We will find out in 15 or so hours.

Skyrim is not much different, apart of the obvious differences.

i have played all the fallout games, beated 2,3 and New Vegas, had a lot of with 2 back in the day, out of the Bethesda era, liked New Vegas the most.
Oh yeah, im 27.

That's because Fallout 3 and New Vegas are mediocre at best. I don't like mediocre games, because in those games the combat is boring. I just want games that have fun, interesting and challenging combat like Dark Messiah of Might and Magic (for skyrim) or fast paced shooters with various ways to kill enemies, not just shooting. Also with smart, but not frustrating AI.
Sure, these games have beautiful worlds and mods can fix some issues and can add lots of things making the game more playable, but combat? Never, because of the engine these games are built on. Remember System shock 2 or Thief? They were built on engines, where combat was clunky, forcing you to use stealth and cover, but everything else like AI, the presentation and so on is top notch.
If Fallout 4 fixes these issues, then I'll consider it. If not, then I'll stick with what I got.

maybe because they are RPGs, you sound more like you want to play a shooter.

No. Why should an RPG with guns be forgiven for clunky combat mechanics? If you are doing a shooter that's the first thing to get right. It should be fun to shoot, not a wooden clunky experience. Look at Mass Effect. It's an RPG but a great combat experience as well.
And I would like to say something about MODs: I don't get it. You pay for a bad game and others have to make it better for free. That's messed up. A game should be good from the start. Otherwise it's not worth my money.

Only the first ME was an RPG, and the only thing almost everyone hated was the combat. I loved it though, and was disappointed when they caved in and turned it into a standard TPS in the later stages. (Both in combat and in general game mechanics.)

because RPGs are tied to character building, it will make sense for the gameplay to be tied to the abilities of your character. And in the end, the point of an RPG is to allow you to experience the game, accordinglly to your character, and a good one should be able to adapt to the descicions and way you play the game.
calling an RPG badly design because it has bad shooting its like calling a racing game bad because theres not enough stunt jumps, they are not tied to the genre, some of the games of that genre have it, but not because some have it ALL of the game of the genre should.
I can see where your coming from, i still think you should stick to shooters.
Comment has been collapsed.
I never said the RPG elements were badly designed, I said combat in the game was badly designed. It's more like buying a racing game advertised as a great all round experience only to find that it exclusively has dragraces and nascar races.
I can see it didn't bother you and I think that's ok. It did bother me. In my opinion Beth had a hard time choosing between the true tactical F1 and 2 combat system and the 3D FPS combat they created by choosing FPS camerastyle. So they put in VATS which is ok plus a unpolished 3D shooter mechanism I don't like. And maybe it's not really the combat in and of itself. It's the combination of the combat, the animations, the greyscales used throughout the game and the lack of a true gritty reality that bothered me. Also emotionwise it didn't do much for me. I didn't feel much for the wasteland and the people in it.
If you want to talk RPG elements: F3 and NV were not that great at building character either. Choices were mostly limited and the consequences were lacking too. SPECIAL stats that don't matter a lot (not even half of what they mattered in F1 and 2 at least). I rather have no stats and have fun playing a role and building relationships with other characters than having a lot of stats that don't mean much. Coming from F1 and 2, Planescape Torment, ... I've only seen a decline in RPG and a build up in mediocrity.
Play F1 and 2 and play them 3 or 4 times with a totally different character. You'll see what I mean.

Never played Fallout before and I preordered the PipBoy edition/FO Anthology.. :P
Completed FO3 GOTY about three weeks ago and started NV today.

I attempted starting Fallout 2 some years back, but was in the middle of my Masters, so didn't even play more than 10 minutes.
Was just an excuse to relax with something different.
But I am interested in playing through the series when I have the time and funds to buy them all.

Never played any of the games, but 4 looks interesting. Serious question: if you've never played any of the series, do you recommend starting with one particular game, or could I jump straight into Fallout 4?
Comment has been collapsed.
you can jump straight into Fallout 4, but i i recommend, if you can, play the other ones, so you can learn about the "main history (the history about the nukes etc.)". Or can just read it at some wiki as well. If the main history (that doenst change anything on the playthroug) doesnt matter, just play the new one =p

So start with Fallout 1? I actually like FPSs like Half-Life and Deus Ex, so am tempted to start with Fallout 3 and skip 1 and 2...

Fallout 3 was a soft reboot/retcon, with little to no ties to the old series, and Fallout 4 is a direct sequel. If you just want the action bits, it's a lot better to play only those. But if you want actual story content, then FO1/2/NV are the way to go.

Fallout 4 draws on a minor side quest in FO3 involving "Synths" or Synthetic Artificial Intelligence beings. That much I have gathered from the trailers. FO3 will also teach you a bit about the neutered, "nice" version of the Brotherhood of Steel. FO1 & 2 are more lore heavy and that is what the entire series is built on writing-wise. But those are really old games and hardcore, unforgiving old-school RPGs, no Bethesda hand holding. Fallout New Vegas is just a really good game that side-tracks from the main story arch, but easily one of my favorite games of all time with FO2.
Comment has been collapsed.
Very lore-heavy with not quests but an intricate web of tasks, counter-tasks, and optional side-missions. It was also an incredibly dark socio-satire, tearing the right-wing politics of the 1950s to pieces.
As games, isometric and turn-based on a hexagrid, so rather slow and entirely stat-driven, with a good dose of luck added into all actions.

From writing standpoint, it was miles above what Bethesda did (a typical fantasy story of chasing a wizard and his magical artefact that can purify the land, while the noble White Knights battle the evil Black Knights and the orks and undead plaguing the land… yeah, Bethesda GS never managed to go past Morrowind's plot, so they reuse it infinitely).
But the game mechanics are not for everyone; it was a modified GURPS, and like all pnp system transported over to a video game, it was a bit overcomplicated at points, leaving several skills (like thrown weapons or gambling) mostly untouched by all. But it was a lot deeper than what the modern Fallouts had, and especially more deeper than what Fallout 4 did.

Although I played hundreds of hours of FO3, my stomach always tied into a knot when I met that… abomination that called themselves Brotherhood there. Too bad you cannot side with the real BoS, who were reduced to bear the lowly name of outcasts.
Comment has been collapsed.
Yeah, the completely neutered the BoS in 3. That annoyed me to no end either. Even if they tried to explain it in the writing as them being a kinder, splinter cell. I actually blew up their bunker in NV to Veronica's dismay. I remember what they really represent.
We'll see what they do with the BoS in 4.
Comment has been collapsed.
The same as in FO3, how else? They already leaked the plot, which is exactly the same as FO3 with a few names changed ehre and there. Why would the factions be any different?
I just hope they didn't invent another bullshit rank like that "star paladin" (what the ever-living censored is a "star" paladin?) to add to the atrocity.
sigh I miss the old BoS. Although maybe it's better that the real writers pretty much killed them off in the aftermath of FO2. Death is favourable to being turned into a mockery of your former self.

Was disgusted by Fallouts 3 apparel/story at first, then years had passed and i found its style/story charming/interesting - but too much time had passed and another thorn showed itself - that disgusting green-brownish tint mixed in every darn texture in the game making the game appear hideous, yes hideous - that and classic Bethesda bullcrap gameplay mechanics > steal a pencil unintentional > wipe out the entire city ...
If 4 is good, which it high likely will be - i'd buy and play it probably sometime soon ... not too keen on getting it asap.

Never played any of them. Wishlisted Fallout 4 on the recommendation of friends and the fact that I loved Skyrim.
Not terribly interested in going back and playing the earlier ones because my backlog is already out of control.

I've played them all (+ tactics and now shelter which I quite like).
The only one I didn't finish is New Vegas. Compared to F1 and F2 the others are a bit of a disappointment imo. In and of themself they are ok games (not more than that). But if I compare them, and you automaticaly do, 3 and NV miss quite a bit of soul and atmosphere and realness (immersiveness if you will).
I'm hopefully looking forward to F4, but I will not buy it before I've seen gameplay video's and read comments about the game. I'm very cautious.

I don't get why NV is praised by many. I played it for 24 hrs and didn't even get to Vegas. Nothing really interesting happened in those 24 hours and all I could think was when is this going to end...
On the side: Monday morning? Which timezone are we speaking?

I am not counting the Brotherhood of Steel game or Fallout Tactics in this poll as the first was an abortion of a game and the latter is not an RPG, but a tactical strategy, combat game. I am also not counting Fallout Shelter nor am I technically counting FO4 yet as it officially launches tomorrow evening. I understand some press people have already played it, but this is more about your history with the Fallout gaming series.
Also, obligatory code for my FO:NV contest ql8pC
Edit: I am amazed at how many of you have never played a single game from the main Fallout series (44%)!
