Hi SG, we just rolled out an update to the way blacklists work, and I wanted to create a quick announcement to explain the difference. Previously, if you blacklisted a user, they would not be able to enter your giveaways, or see them on the homepage. Now, there is one addition: If you blacklist a user, you will also not be able to enter their giveaways, or see them on the homepage.

There are two reasons for the change...

  1. It's more fair to giveaway creators, and it prevents users from quietly blacklisting a giveaway creator, while continuing to enter their giveaways.
  2. It will encourage users to put more thought into their reason for blacklisting another user, and it should discourage blacklisting over minor grievances.

This might leave you wondering, is there anything preventing you from unblacklisting a user, entering their giveaways, and then blacklisting them again? Yes. When unblacklisting a user, there is a delay between one second and one day week until you once again see their giveaways on the homepage, and have access to entering them. If you try to directly open their giveaways sooner, you will see an error, such as "You do not have permission to view this giveaway for another 35 minutes, since you previously blacklisted the giveaway creator.". The length of the delay is proportional to the amount of time you had the user blacklisted (i.e. if you blacklisted a user for 5 hours, you'll need to wait 5 hours after unblacklisting the user), up to the maximum of one day week.

Haha, would be nice to know how many blacklists were 'cleared' not because people don't have to worry about kinda being taken advantage of anymore, but because they're now unable to enter lots of GA's since they were doing the very same thing themselves xD.

I see it as a clean slate. I wish there was a poll asking people if they wanted to see the entire database cleared of every blacklist.

With a change to site functionality this massive, everyone deserves a clean slate.

Nope, not everybody. There are really rude and/or hateful people. There are intentional rulebreakers (obviously, I'm not talking about beginners who just need a bit of help). I wouldn't want the system to automatically clean my BL of, say, local homophobes.

The two things are totally unreleated. I still don't intend to remove rulebreakers or toxic people, just because I can't enter their giveaways (I haven't entered either) they won't magically turn nice people.
If at all, with this functionality change everyone should check *their* blacklist and re-evaluate - but this have literally 0 effect on the blacklisted's side.

I can understand Blacklisting rule breakers. I've never seen anyone truly toxic on SG (yet).
Most of the time people blacklist for some really weird stuff.

It could be that you had them blacklisted, and now they don't need to BL you to keep you from entering their GAs.

99 % people that I have blacklisted are rule breakers (usually with 0 GAs and most likely some of them being bots) that happened to win my GAs so I do not think that is the case. You for example happen to be on my other list :P ;)

Don't really know what to say. You're maybe the single person on SG who I have blacklisted who did nothing against me or the rules - most of my giveaways are for games you already own, but tbh if I would give away something new-ish for groups or such, I wouldn't really want it to be just a twothousandsomething-th win of yours to be never seen again. Is that weird?

Comment has been collapsed.

I dont understand how you read it as directed towards you ;) as i can see you still got me bl'ed and i was talking bout ppl suddenly unBLing the moment they hear BLs are now bidirectional ;p you did not ;) also I would be the last person to tell you what you can and cannot BL for. Ive been big advocate of giving users ways to restrict GAs, including BLs, since SGv1 and I've always been saying that whatever reason you choose to BL anyone is your right. I can understand it or not but it doesnt matter, it is your money you pay for your games you give away, it is your right to decide who should and should not enter them, not anyone else decision but yours. So nope, even if your reason for BLing me was because you don't like ppl with red avatars it would not be weird for me, it would be simply your right to do so.

That's what I did, I unblacklisted some people because they had me BL, now I have my BL slots back!

Exactly this. There is no need to keep people bl'd, because they'll keep themselves out of my GAs with their bl.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Oh, havent thought of it but actually you may be right ;) stilif someone decided upon bidirectional BL unbling now juat to save slots may not be the best idea if their point is to still keep said person from entering their GAs. What if I decide to unBL them thinking the same way, i dont need to BL him, because he BLed me so he already cannot enter ;)

I don't do mutual blacklists to begin with, so didn't remove any users from my list. I did remove 19 users from blacklist in the last few weeks (before this change), but it was a result of this thread (which is still accepting requests for removal).

I was removed from 6 blacklist so far, but it doesn't matter much because the removal was probably only due to this change and not due to anything I did. Also, I rarely enter giveaways, so it's not going to really affect me one way or the other.

Additionally to what I've said above, but want to add to it...

I've always been pro blacklist anonymity however now if its going to mutual blacklist can we please know who has blacklisted us, that way I can know who I've unintentionally blacklisted because they blacklisted me.

Secondly, will whitelisting overwrite the mutual blacklist? Say someone blacklists me but I don't want them to be excluded, can I whitelist them and they can enter my gifts?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I doubt it, it would be very complicated to implement a system in which whitelists would create exceptions for blacklists, and besides, it's very counter-intuitive that people would ever whitelist a person that has them blacklisted, so I actually prefer that the system 'punishes' the blacklister in this scenario instead of the blacklisted person obtaining a whitelist spot undetected.

You should just go through your entire blacklist manually like I just did - if they didn't blacklist you, the message will be changed to reflect that, so you can deduce whether they blacklisted you or not.

no, not really

people would ever whitelist

I would like making a few exceptions too but indeed not use whitelist for that

removed from whitelist and added to blacklist for 20seconds to test. no, it won't let me look at one of your whitelist GAs that i could of moments prior.

also it was a good test to see how accurate the cooldown is, and it's pretty accurate. (it only had 10seconds left of cooldown by the time i tested that)

re-wl'd ^^

It does not look like the new kind of mutual blacklist shows up as your ordinary blacklist spots. At least my blacklist counter are still at 0 while being blacklisted by a couple of people.

Perfect! I'd love to see this expanded even further to a maximum of a month (since that's how long a giveaway can last), but a week should be fine for most users :3

I agree with you Bludshade. While a lot of giveaways are short(er) ones there are giveaways/events/trains that take longer, some of them several weeks. My trains usually take 3 weeks. If Cg expands it to the same length a giveaway can me made (4 weeks); then all giveaways, events and trains will be covered and protected by this great two-way blacklist feature. :3

Agreed, I think up to a month would be fine too. At least those who suspect abuse can choose to keep their giveaways lasting shorter than a week for now.

Well, that dealt with almost my entire 'blacklist' of 80+, and in the process I noticed that a few of them had removed me beforehand as well. Even if some people won't change their minds, I'm just glad nobody can sneak into other people's giveaways anymore while having them blacklisted.

(okey, they can still do it but now at least they cant get your gas)

Gratz, I always thought it was unfair for people to blacklist someone while always being able to enter his giveaways.

But I think it would be more effective to actually add someone to the user blacklist instead of delay the unblacklisting. Since some will always find a way to take advantage of it.

If X blacklists Y, then X should appear on Y blacklist, so even if X removes Y from his blacklist he won't be able to enter Y giveaways, until Y actually removes X from his blacklist (might add a mention "blacklisted for blacklisting you" / "unblacklisted you")...

Permalink

It's more fair to giveaway creators, and it prevents users from quietly blacklisting a giveaway creator, while continuing to enter their giveaways.

Thank you again and I just like to add that your first reason isn't a SG myth/legend like for example SG premium but it's daily SG reality. I have had it happen to me multiple times and I heard and read from friends and other SG users that it happens also to them.

Unlikely. The most common theme does seem to be "bad ratio".
You are right in the sense that all those low-levels who blacklisted because of spite or some petty forum drama will now have to decide whether they want to hold a grudge or greediness is stronger. (Because let's be honest, if someone is balcklisted by a level 0 or 1 user, they will give about zero fucks about it.)

I'm not sure what I think of it. I do remove people from my blacklist based on what they do, with lesser offenses (like doing multiple giveaways of games given out for free) being removed when I see them doing something good (like giving away non-free games). Now those people are likely to forever remain on my blacklist.

You could check them manually every now and then - of course that depends on your bl size. I just checked mine and decided to keep all 6 of them on there. I rarely blacklist and when I do it's actually people I don't want to win from, so I'm fine with this.

Great improvement! Gives incentive to use blacklisting somewhat properly as well as making it fair for everyone :) Thank you for implementing this.
** Anyone who BLs for "lesser offenses" can use userscripts like rh ESGST to user-tag like this for easier removal later if you wish so.
