There is a lot of franchises that are forgotten, and we want back: Silent Hill, Legacy of Kain, Monkey Island, and many more.

But I think that there are less known/remembered franchises that are awfully forgotten, with wonderful, complex worlds, that can be really cool to revisit in a videogame form.

  • Ringworld

  • Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy

  • Discworld

  • Riverworld

  • Usagi Yojimbo (the recent game doesn't count. Its a half-baked mess)

  • Lost Vikings

  • Another World

  • Dune

What do you think? Is there a really old and/or forgotten universe that you want to revisit?

Baldur's Gate got the Siege of Dragonspear expansion in 2016 and Jagged Alliance: Rage is releqasing at the end of the month so those two aren't really forgotten.

Both were/are not made by the original Devs, Siege was just bad imo, from what i have seen, and Rage is just Jagged Alliance Clone nr 237 that tries to get the feeling of the old games but will fail again which sadly happened too often

The Wheel of Time was one of my first PC games. An underrated gem: nice level design, lots of atmosphere, solid Unreal-like FPS with original spells and weird monsters. Too bad i've lost the CDs.

Well, you have already all talked about the most beautiful forgotten franchises out there.. I'm just adding here one of my favourites: Dept. Heaven, which includes one of my top 5 favourite games of all times, Riviera

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dept._Heaven

So much potential here, wasted between useless unattended announcements and stupid games.. I would love so much that something had been done but yeah, forgotten and destroyed franchise which will never be resumed.. still we have luckily games such as Riviera to play and replay forever..

Arcanum

and maybe Summoner as well (guys from Volition totally should do something other than Saints Row for a change).

Oh and while not actually forgotten, but we should have a decent D&D game, didn't have one since NWN2.

C.S. Lewis- The Chronicles of Narnia (couldn't read these enough when I was growing up, back in the Stone ages...)

Piers Anthony- The Xanth series (Also read these to piece back in the Stone Ages, always though they would make a great game world...):

Stephen Donaldson- The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant (Twisted, in such a wonderful way... still read these over and over.)

Freelancer - I fucking loved this game but there's no other space shooter like it, they are either too complex or don't have the same level of customization.

I so would take a Freelancer 2 over Star Citizen.
Not that anyone probably believes that'll ever be released.

Project I.G.I. (I'm Going In) - Lame name, but a really hardcore tactical beast of an FPS game.
Freelancer - I could never buy the full game since I was too poor, but I fondly remember the demo as spectacular.
No One Lives Forever - A sexy female spy in the 60's saves the world. An FPS full of humor and meta-references.

There have been rumors circulating for a while that the team over at GOG.com are trying to get the license for No One Lives Forever out of limbo, so hopefully something will come of that.

I've heard that the rights (or who exactly has what rights to it) for NOLF is a nightmare. There have been quite a few attempts at purchasing the rights, but there seem to be 2 or 3 parties that own at least part of it (but aren't sure if they own it). I know it doesn't make sense, but I read an article about it and it seems like a mess that will never be fixed!

I read a few months ago that there were hints that NOLF maybe coming to GOG and Night Dive studio, same folks who were able to sort out System Shock's licensing mess, maybe working on it. There might be a gleam of hope.

Yea, it's a real shame the sequel ended up getting cancelled, though apparently there is a leaked prototype floating around online.

There was actually a bit of drama a few months ago when a studio (Golden Mushroom) bought the Glover trademark and started making a new game in the series, but then they found out another studio (Piko Interactive) owned the copyright after buying it from Atari, so they had to stop. I guess they're still planning on making a spiritual successor of some sort though.

Tiny & Big in Grandpa's Leftovers

I really enjoyed this game, and there is definitely space for more games in the franchise. The name made me think they at least planned for a sequel, but I was disappointed to find no information about one. It may not be the oldest franchise but it's the one I want to see expanded the most for some reason

Little Big Adventure series. I think the developers were bought out and their core team got dissolved later. Played LBA2 when I was a kid and it was the most fun I've ever had with a videogame in my life.

LBA2 is the better game. The checkpoint savegames of the first drove me crazy, and made playing the game a chore.

Still, both are amazing adventures with awesome soundtracks that I listen still to this very day.

I was quite disappointed in discovering that "Shadows die twice" was a new IP and not the reboot of my beloved PS1 stealth series.

I would love a new Ultima game. A true Ultima game, which was a single player game. I realize there is Shroud of the Avatar, but it just doesn't feel like an Ultima game to me (more like Ultima Online, perhaps?).

If they decided to reboot the series from Ultima I, I wouldn't be too upset either!

'Tis funny how many listed "franchises" have exactly one game in them or aren't even a franchise just one sub-series of a franchise.

By many you mean two? Only Hitchhiker's and Riverworld had only one game. And Hitchhiker's has an incomplete sequel so ...

And they're all main series, what are you talking about?

  • Live-A-Live, rather unknown SNES jrpg from Squaresoft. And good one too.
  • Blood. Remake of those two Blood's would be great...
  • Quarantine and Road Warrior - who wants to be a psycho taxi driver once again?

Yeah, Dune could really use another game, maybe a proper RPG (KOTOR style). The last was in 2001, I think. It's such a vast and detailed universe...

The Interplay Trek games.

25th Anniversary and Judgment Rites were amazing, but the planned sequel Secret of Vulcan Fury was cancelled mid-development amid Interplay's woes.

The series ended there, and aside from Microprose's A Final Unity, no Trek game has managed to capture the spirit of the series so well.

I would die for another good Discworld adaptation. Discworld II was epic.

What I would like to see is a decent Flatout game (last one I enjoyed was 2) and while it's not forgotten I would love to play a good Dragon Age game again (really loved Origins and hate what they did with the sequels).

A few: Heretic, Dino Crisis, Viewtiful Joe, Vampire the Masquerade, Syphon Filter, Alundra, Breath of Fire, Parasite Eve, Crimson Skies, Chronicles of Riddick, Clock Tower, Panzer Dragoon, Star Wars Jedi Knight, Suikoden, Drakkan, Summoner

Considering what they did to Parasite Eve on PSP, it's probably best SquarEnix doesn't go anywhere near it again. Loved the first game on PS1 though (other then the sewer bats).

The 3rd Birthday was released 8 years ago and made by people that might not even be in the company anymore or might have moved on in the company hierarchy. Square Enix then is different than Square Enix now same as with the gaming landscape so I'm more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt and hopefully they revisit the franchise.
