There is a lot of franchises that are forgotten, and we want back: Silent Hill, Legacy of Kain, Monkey Island, and many more.

But I think that there are less known/remembered franchises that are awfully forgotten, with wonderful, complex worlds, that can be really cool to revisit in a videogame form.

  • Ringworld

  • Hitchhiker's guide to the Galaxy

  • Discworld

  • Riverworld

  • Usagi Yojimbo (the recent game doesn't count. Its a half-baked mess)

  • Lost Vikings

  • Another World

  • Dune

What do you think? Is there a really old and/or forgotten universe that you want to revisit?

Didn't hear of it. Seems pretty close in spirit. I'll have an eye on Amid Evil...

Ziggurat was a pleasant surprise. Is an Heretic inspired FPS roguelite

Blizzard keeps mentioning Lost Vikings, making references to them in games and other media. Their other games from that era seem to be far more forgotten, games like Blackthorn/Blackhawk, Rock 'n Roll Racing (although this has a bit of fan following) & Radical Psycho Machine Racing.

Didn't catch any mention of Lost Vikings, but a new game in the series would make a nice announcement beside Diablo 4 at Blizzcon.

Pretty much every game Blizzard has made since Warcraft 3 has made at least a passing reference to The Lost Vikings, with the possible exception of Diablo 3.

Tried to avoid games with only one entry, if they weren't based on a biggest franchise.

But I want another Blackthorne.

Well when I was a kiddo and played my PS1 for hours on end I used to love the Tomba! games. I would love to see a third instalment or even a reissue of the first two games.

Hardly. Some of the original developers got into Access Games (Deadly Premonition, D4), but the IP belongs to Sony. At least the first two games are available for download on PSN.

Wow, I had no idea it was those same folks! Not I've ever really hoped a Tomba! 3 though. But it's good to know that if I ever own a Playstation again the first two games will be there :) Thank you very much, I knew none of this.

Colony Wars from the Playstation 1 era.
Alas, Space combat games don't seem to have a market. Apart from a select few with massive followings.

Bloody Roar 2 on PS1 was amazing, even to this day the animation holds up really well.

Yeah. I got after Tekken 3 and I was really impressed by the visuals of the game.

I remember Croc 2, it was awful. A 3D platformer with tank controls like Resident Evil.

True. I remember feeling nauseous and getting frustrated by the awful controls whenever I play Croc and Spyro. But it's still a fun game to play.

Does Golden Sun count? I used to love the first and second one on gameboy. Third one was okay. Then never heard from it again.

Have you ever played Beyond the Beyond? It's also by Camelot and it's something of a proto-Golden Sun.

I'm probably the last person on earth to actually kinda "miss" these (well, sort of):

  • Rise of the Robots
  • Earth 2140/2150/2160
  • Dark Reign
  • Total Eclipse (1994) / Solar Eclipse
  • Enter the Matrix / Path of Neo

More popular franchises that haven't been mentioned yet:

  • WipEout (RIP Studio Liverpool. We do have Formula Fusion as a spiritual successor, but it's just not the same...)
  • Total Annihilation / Supreme Commander (we had Planetary Annihilation, which was a spiritual successor of sorts, but not a thoroughbred sequel)
  • I guess I am not allowed to mention MechWarrior, as MW:Online exists (but is apparently all kinds of horrible and ungood) and MW:5 is in development (but by completely different people to the classic games and by the looks of it will turn out to be a travesty. Oh well. At least we have Battletech).
  • MechCommander (I am allowed to mention this one, right?)
  • Delta Force, Comanche, etc. (RIP Novalogic)
  • Is it ok to mourn Crysis?

Rise of the Robots looked so amazing back when it came out, but I just could never get into the gameplay.

To be fair, the gameplay was pretty crap, haha. As a fighting game the balance was simply broken. You could scam your way to victory by using the same unblockable moves, I think. But those impossibly futuristic looking robots and that ice cold atmosphere were what drew me in back then.

Have you tried RedOut?

Permalink

I tried the demo, it's a cool game and I have it wishlisted. It's probably closer in feel to the WipEouts of old than any other game including even Formula Fusion but the aesthetics and music are different, which isn't bad at all. I just feel it's its own thing.

I really hope they finish D4 eventually. I was so disappointed to find out there were no more episodes. While I liked Blake Stone and Commander Keen back in the day, I'm not sure they really need a reboot today.

Not everyone cared for Age of Empires Online, but my friend and I really enjoyed it and were disappointed when they shutdown the servers. We were stoked to find recently that some people started a private server for it called Project Celeste. There are some issues with it, such as needing to use a virtual LAN like ZeroTier to play online if you can't open your ports, but it's still definitely worth checking out imo.

it's so Sad that D4 was cancelled, i really hoping for a kickstarter of sorts to bring the series back, it was so damn funny and refreshing
Blake stone as a Sci-Fi "A-la prey" (or think as a Doom with aliens) will work without a doubt.
and a Commander Keen game done in a-la "A Hat in time" with the pogo and blaster, etc... will be a big hit.

I want another game in the Mother (Earthbound) series. Heck, I'd even settle for Previously Mother 4 fan game to come out. I also would like to see a good Duke Nukem game come out; not another disappointment that was Duke Nukem Forever, and not another Duke Nukem 3D repackage like World Tour, but a modern Duke with a good team and budget (with Jon St. John of course).
