It's been a long time, but I finally upgraded my internet yesterday. For the last few years, I was paying for what was supposed to be decent, but the best I ever got was around 14 Mb/s. (Delta was nice enough to point out that I was getting ripped off.) Most of the time it was closer to 4 Mb/s even though I was paying for 12 Mb/s. Well, slow speeds no longer!

Here's a couple of tests I've run since upgrading.
Test 1
Test 2

As you would imagine, I've very happy with my new service and excited, so what better way to celebrate than with my fellow SGers?

Anyway, here's a small giveaway in celebration.

What's the internet?

TIL: My internet sucks compared to most people. I don't think there's any faster option where I live, either.

It's a huge increase for you and a huge train for the world.

I have two places separated by 750 meters with similar conditions and the same company. Although an offer was done to me for both, still paying in one place nearly 2x of the "price" in the other one and theorically less speed as is adsl and not vdsl and both are near a net station.

About 2MB/s for downloads, 2.7MB/s on a really good day. Keep in mind, however, one download means that trying to load even some of the faster webpages can take up to 10+ seconds to load, and several times that for the slower ones...

So wait, you went with comcast? I work for them and i think they are crap..
Hopefully, you went with getting your own modem and router and not the junk they are leasing to customers.

From my previous experiences with Comcast, I already know the customer service reps (especially online) are, for the most part, less than helpful. I know what I can get, and I know how much the company doesn't really care about me as a customer in the long run. Compared to the DSL I just dumped, however, I can at least get good and reliable internet out of them. Also, Comcast has never lied to me to get my business.

As for equipment, I try never to lease if given the choice. My DSL gave me the lease or buy option, but the only thing I could really buy was their branded modem. Given my previous experiences with cable internet, I knew I had more options and could get better quality equipment. I actually bought my own modem (Arris Surfboard SB6121) and router (Asus RT-AC52U Dual-band 802.11 ac with 2.4 Ghz & 5 Ghz wifi frequencies) well ahead of making the switch.

I also don't have to worry about getting hassled about "bundling services to save money" because I only pay $4.51 / month for home phone (Ooma VOIP) and $8.57 / month for television (NetFlix). The rest of the TV we watch is all over-the-air and I have an antenna on the roof that picks it up great most of the time.

I don't use comcast as my internet provider. You do get what you pay for really, all the complaints you read about comcast having terrible speeds is because they use the leased modem/router and the speeds are coming from wifi. The wifi on the leased modem/router is total garbage. I been working for them long enough to tell you out of the thousands of reps they have internally or externally, they do LIE. Comcast has outsourced reps. If you reach their wireless dept, most of the phone reps that are from the US are knowledgeable. At least, you bought your own equipment to save frustrations as a whole. I write software for their IT dept in case you wanted to know what i do there.

Another thing, comcast is providing 2gbps fiber connections in may for atlanda metro area for residential lines. Eventually, the entire country.

The biggest problem I think most of us have with our ISPs is the limited number of options to choose from. Where I live, it's pretty much Comcast for Cable or -that-other-place- for DSL. Others who've posted in this tread have mentioned they only have one choice, which is really no choice at all.

Nice to see some companies finally moving to put in fiber. I'd really like to see Google get their fiber network spread out as well so we won't end up in much the same situation as now with only 1 (maybe 2) providers in any given area.

True, I dont live in a area where comcast is available. Only Time Warner. I pay for 30mbps but they give me 150mbps. There is Uverse. I work from home, I stayed at a friends house for a week where they had uverse. Upon my testing, it was a slow connection. I work from home usually. If i have to talk to my boss over Voip, it was a slow/unstable connection and i was connected via ethernet to the modem. I wasnt happy, neither was my boss to say the least lol

More speed than you pay for is always a good thing. I can't complain with my current service so far as every time I run a speedtest, I'm hitting close to or beyond my "up to" speed.

Yeah, wired in, you get a bonus. Can't say the same about wireless. With wireless, expect a degrade in the signal but if your router is giving perfect performance then you should be able to pick up the bonus speed. It is around 10-15mbps extra.
