I need recommendations for lesser known and underapprecited games that are on Steam or otherwise. These can be games that got less than favorable reviews (and were therefore ignored by many) when they came out, but are actually not that bad, or games that it seems no one's heard of that deserve more attention. I'll start with two of my own. More will follow once I've looked through my collection and I remember more.

The Saboteur

This game is interesting for a number of reasons. It was the last game made by Pandemic studios, who made games like Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, the Destroy all Humans games and a few others before they were shut down. The game was doomed from the get-go, with the studio shutting down DURING its development. The game is set in France during World War II, and you play a resistance fighter. The game is very clunky, but it has a lot of interesting ideas, and in many ways it plays like a mixture of Grand theft Auto (with the open world and the driving) and Assassin's Creed (with how you're able to climb every building). The game has a great mechanic where mostly everything apart from the blood will be in black and white in an area until you liberate it. It's kind of a shame that more people haven't heard of it, because it's quite a lot of fun, and worth a look if you're into open-world action games with optional stealth where you can cause lots of mayhem. The biggest flaw with the game is that the DLC that lets you see uncencored titties is not available on the Playstation 3 version anymore.. proof that DLC is one of the worst things to happen to gaming.

Lord of the Rings Conquest

Another Pandemic Studios game, and probably the one responsible for them being shut down by EA. In this game they took what they learned making the excellent Star Wars Battlefront games and put it in the Lord of the Rings universe. The game received a lot of negative press upon its release, and I'd be lying if I said some of the criticism isn't valid. The combat can be very repetitive, the four classes you can choose from get old pretty fast, but if you can get passed that, the game is very, very fun. It lets you play through two campaigns with up to two people, letting you fight in the most epic battles from the movies, but the second campaign is by far the most interesting. In it you control the bad guys, and every mission ends with you killing a member of the Fellowship. IT LETS YOU BURN THE SHIRE DOWN AND SLAUGHTER HOBBITS. The game occasionally lets you control a hero/villain from the series, and massacring people (HOBBITS) as the Balrog or The Mouth or Sauron is really satisfying. The classes they give you all have different uses on the battlefield. The sorcerer's can put up shields to protect their allies, the scouts can turn invisible and insta-kill someone if manage to sneak behind them, the archers provide support from a distance, and the knights charge the enemy head-on. It's a shame that I never got to experience this game online, because I'm sure it would be a lot of fun.

I would suggest that if you're not playing with friends in co-op, then play a few minutes solo to get the basics.
I've played with a few guys in co-op online, and they were nothing short of useless and selfish, which is not fun at all. :)

Hidden gems... there's been a few games I've played and enjoyed recently that didn't get the attention they deserved...
DEX - (http://store.steampowered.com/app/269650/) . It's a bit like a 2D Deus Ex. You could go almost anywhere from the word go and characters and conversations would vary based on what you'd already experienced.
Hot tin Roof - (http://store.steampowered.com/app/253390/). A bit quirky and not the easiest game to get into at first, but it's a metrovanian mystery with a few different outcomes and different ways of approaching things.
Citizens of earth (http://store.steampowered.com/app/258910/). Probably the closest to a nintendo style RPG you'll find on steam.
Boot Hill heroes (http://store.steampowered.com/app/313470/). Another RPG that was pretty fun to play
Stick it to the man (http://store.steampowered.com/app/251830/). A pretty funny platform puzzler with a dark and twisted sense of humour. Good voice acting as well.

Yeah I agree. I went into it not expecting too much but the quality was amazing. It's the sort of game other indies should strive to be. There are too many half baked game ideas floating around. Stick it to the man took a simple concept and told a funny and well focussed story. We don't expect GTA from an indie studio, but at least finish off what you're doing properly. :-)

There are many underappreciated games on Steam although a lot of them are only interesting for a certain group of individuals. I also think that a lot of the bundle games are underappreciated by people .... Well to throw out at least some names have these two:

Both games are story driven games with a good atmosphere. If you want to play something where you can take your time and enjoy the setting I can recommand them to anyone. Well, in fact I did that actually.

Dead Head Fred originaly on PSP but then ported over to playstation network and Xbox Marketplace or something, not sure since i dont own the consoles but this game is VERY great but VERY underrated and missed, overlooked, unkown and thus it wasnt bought enough to earn enough Money for a sequel that they may still want to do and i hope they will because the game is interesting and cool, gruesome and humorus, atmospheric music and eerie enviroments in a messed up town, Fred badass and awesome, gameplay brutal and unique, his voice and attitude just simply enjoyable, a great game. Heres the 1st trailer = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dofkW-Y6atc 2nd trailer = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BMbghQC4css and 3rd trailer = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RgE-87uvmuo aswell as a interesting developer interview = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WznRo8Ja3gU worthy of a purchase i gurrantee it and id love if you did, anything to help fund the sequel hopefully.

Pursuit Force Extreme Justice on the PSP and PS2, the direct sequel to the very famous, one of the first and best games ever created for the PSP being Pursuit Force, however this one wasnt advertised almost at all and thus went under most radars that werent fans of the first game probably, even though its great and even better than the first one in plenty of ways, and even was rated positively well but it didnt sell enough and thus might have been THE game that marked BigBig Studio for death of which my heart still hurts very much, fucking Sony, saying they had to close them down back in 2012 because they wanted better games to be made on their systems BUT Pursuit Force ARE great games, both of them, idiots, il forever hate them for it... anyway, its epic, its awesome, its badass, its cool, just straight great gameplay with a cool theme and mechanics, enemies, weapons, great characters and likeable voice acting both on your and enemy's sides, cool cars, amazing music (the theme song still makes my heart both blush and cry...) enviroments, interesting continuous story with alot of extras besides the main story campaign. Heres the 1st trailer = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zAG-wPDjYU4 2nd trailer = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMZvCinRJlc 3rd trailer = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QDAM7FVBFPw and a interesting developer interview with the second part easily to find nearby = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vaev63jqyZw im still so upset its over for the franchise, it hurts and il hate Sony forever for this, not just for the Playstation exclusives being forever exclusive... p.s. my favourite gang are the Convicts because of how makeshift and self made their equipment is and how rough, criminilistic and grudgefull they are, just plain badasses, bad boys.

State of War and State of War Warmonger for the PC, a very underrated but totaly great and unique strategy game that almost no one knows of its existance and i wouldnt either if my cousin hadnt bought it for me so many years ago, heres the trailer, it doesnt show the exact gameplay but this shows quite well how the game looks, Works and what you will be able to use, but ofcourse ingame it looks, moves and sounds better, realy good = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YeK6Q2RK2ZE

Starcraft: Precursor aka Starcraft demo , a pre Starcraft standalone expansion game that i dont know how many know of it, but it serves as a proluge to the original Starcraft before the events there began, in which this game you play a few missions as a Confederate Ofiicier tasked in the beginning to combat the rebels known as Sons of Korhal, to twarting the sudden invasion of ''Xenomorphs'' at which no one had ever seen them before but already were combating this new alien threat, this demo campaign also features its own unique tutorial mission different than the one in the original Starcraft but ofcourse remains as a non Canon mission, and a certain character cameo is present in the campaign. Heres a longplay video if you dont want to play it but i suggest you do cause its good = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iHLxuW9wQRM i also highly reccommend other Starcraft expansions made by fans and approved as offical by Blizzard themselves, expansion campaigns like Insurrection and more.

Silent Hill Origins on the PSP and PS2 is a game i consider a very much an underdog and unrightfully so because its a great game, reminding us how great Konami used to be but not anymore, heres the first trailer = https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p62i_nqt2GA 2nd trailer https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8kJgT3fldk and some other trailers you can easily find yourself.

And i played The Sabotuer and i loved it, great characters, good story, amazing gameplay of shooting, duisgusing, buying and earning, destroying and driving, collecting cars and liberating France, big world and unique missions, climbing, various skills, great game, i want it and i want it on steam. As for my games, highly recommend them, all of them are truly worthy of a playtrough.

Oh damn, some great games in here. Dead Head Fred is wonderful, and I'd do unspeakable things for a port on Steam. Pursuit Force: Extreme Justicce is a helluva lot of fun and one of my favorite games on the PSP. Never heard of the State of War games, but they look really interesting. Silent Hill Origins biggest problem by far is that it's part of the Silent Hill series, and thus it's always going to be compared to the masterpieces that followed it. (particularly Silent Hill 2, and 4 was a great game, screw y'all). If you just don't compare it to those games, it's a wonderful game, especially on the go. Thanks for the suggestions :D

Oh? You recognize the greatness in these titles :) ? DHF wonderfull? Youve played it? And you'd do unspeakable things for a steam port?! Youre that huge of a fan =D ??? Thats awesome, same with me, anything to get more of it, which so far i can think of is to only buy it if its possible...as for the port...all i can think of is messaging whomever owns the developers since they put alot of faith into them and they didnt disband the studio so there is hope, as hard as it may be achievable...

Both Pursuit Forces were indeed helluva lot of fun, altough Extreme Justice taking it further with a great story and great everything else, even multiplayer mode that saddly no one ever played as there arent even any videos of that... but you played it, thats amazing to hear. Theres bunch more good hidden PSP games out there, anything that isnt anime that is, which it saddly is being drowned in... never heard of State of War games? Well there is only one game with a expansion techincaly, a sequel should have existed but problems made it not happen...but nyeah, ofcourse you never heard of it, like i said, if it werent for my cousin with his random bought games, neither would have i known of it, probably was limited to a small amount of disc copies sold in few places for all i know of...but its a great game to try and theres atleast one good walktrough of it on youtube luckily., it indeed is very interesting because of the many unique tank, turret, robot, Building and support powers avaivable per mission, you get an Advancer that improves buildings remotely, buildings instead of being completly destroyed instead of get owned by whomever blows it up, cool game.

I dont think Sillent Hill Origins has a problem of being compared to the other ones, it has everything that makes Silent Hill, Silent Hill, WITH enjoyable, eerie, scary, frightening, good gameplay. It has puzzles, random notes, camera angles, mysterious characters, a story that doesnt explain anything and doesnt make sence and leave you confused, terrfying grotesk monsters of pure nightmare, bosses, both world traversing, good protagonist, scavenging for ammo, weapons and Health, map navigating and marking, misty fog, cut off roads, good music esspecialy the one in the beginning, heavy darkness, good difficulty, multiple endings, something that isnt the Pyramid head for once and only once, its a amazing game man, it has no problems, it can safely be compared to others and still be good, this Silent Hill 2 overrated overpraised over others realy has to end, didnt play any others but wish i did, only played Homecoming but didnt finish it but i liked it, hard and scary altough with glitches...and yes, its also great if you dont compare to the others, its great no matter what. Youre welcome for the suggestions but it would seem you have played most of these already though... didnt think anyone would have, at all.

In my opinion, Silent Hill Origins is a good imitation of what made Silent Hill great. I really do think 1-4 are a lot better, and that the 2nd one deserves all the praise it gets. Still, thanks for the suggestions, I'm sure others who reads the thread will not have heard of them all :D

Good imitation?! Are you crazy!? Youre unneceserly cruel against a great game :[ the game happens in Silent Hill for christ sake, its not a imitation, its a great game on its own as a Silent Hill game, common, why do you have to put it down so baddly.... maybe the rest are better, i dont know but it hurts to hear you say that since Origins is one of the greatest to me if not THE greatest SH game.... its ''origins'' so its important... like i said, im tired of seeing all that damn praise on the 2nd, overshadowing the others, like, just, ugh..... dont thank me, i didnt suggest alot....and nobody else reads anything i write, nor do they care.....

I really enjoyed Vertigo Void (http://store.steampowered.com/app/410440/) - a 3D block puzzler game where the world and gravity rotates, buttons, bonuses, warps and the exits to find. Short levels but a lot of them (210) perfect for short bursts. Starts simple but later levels are very challenging and well designed. 24 reviews, only one negative from someone who played it for 6 minutes. Developer even responded to a support request and fixed a bug quickly too.

It may not be everyone's cup of tea but I found it very enjoyable and different and would recommend to give it a go.

The Blackwell saga.
Pixelated point and click with a story arching over the 5 games - I think partially the 5 different titles that makes people afraid of it. First one has 600 reviews,, second 240, 198, 223, even the last one only have 300. It's almost an underground despite of how incredibly good it is - the developer has in-depth commentary for each game, commenting on the story, characters, development, even on how he upgraded his equipment, or got new voice-actors. - each game is somewhat different in style, and that also adds a lot to the feeling.
I wholeheartedly recommend it for point and click enthusiastics who would love to see a little noire-esque detective story with a lot of mystery and ghosts :)

I know it is kind of a big game and well known but Mad Max is truly amazing. Bought it very cheaply in the first few months it was out and just sat in my installed library until I finally decided to try it and my word it's amazing. It also runs amazingly, strong 1080/60 at almost ultra on my old 750 ti (can't remember the name of the cpu, some super low end AMD one) I put 45 hours into it and I plan to play through it again in the not so distant future

Did play LOTR Conquest a few years ago so don't remember a lot but I do remember I had a great time on it

I recently started playing Mad Max after getting it in a Humble Monthly Bundle, and I'm surprised by how much I'm enjoying it. The world is just gorgeous and very interesting, and I really enjoy both the driving and the combat. It seems to have the classic Avalanche problem of being centered around the same few activities and mission types. I'm only 10 hours in, and a lot of the negative reviews saying that the game gets really boring are from people who's played it for 30-40, so I might start feeling it soon too. Hopefully it stays this enjoyable, because I'd love to put another 20-30 hours into it.

From the Depths - a ship designer with all components following simple rules but allowing tons of combinations in their arrangement. Didn't get nearly as much attention as i hoped it would.
Air Brawl - Extremely fast paced dogfighting game, playerbase abandoned it within 2 months of release, game is now free because no one played it :(
Homebrew - Vehicle Sandbox - build-it-yourself vehicle simulator, been in development hell for a while as the codebase went through an entire overhaul.
Istrolid - build-your-ships RTS with AI automation features, should have been a bigger success than it was on release(most of the playerbase played it before it got on Steam).
Rimworld -Reimaging of Dwarf Fortress with Prison Architect-like graphics. Still not on Steam, in a world where indie game notability is almost entirely dependent on being on Steam. Also known as organ harvesting simulator.
Assault Tech 1: Battletech - Attempt at a Mechwarrior 2 remake by MekTek having quit a bit of progress done into it, thrown into the "this never existed and you shouldn't ask about it, period" bin by the developers as soon as they started developing an almost completely unrelated commercial title. I can't even find it anymore on the internet.
Jet Racing Extreme - think Grand Prix Legends(obscure 1960s era F1 simulator with horrendously slippery cars whose core eventually became NR2003) with a jet-powered car. Extremely difficult to master due to the intricacies of racing on a vehicle with jetlag, on tracks that don't help with you at all with obstacles deliberately put into them, but absolutely satisfying when you do get the hang of it and don't get your brakes/tires to catch on fire by using them so much or destroy the engines by pushing them too hard. Limited number of tracks, No news from the developer since january(allegedly developing a smartphone-based inertial controller for the game).
M.A.V. - Attempt at a Chromehounds remake by a single developer, got construction mechanics nailed already but failed to attract much attention because it didn't focus on graphics at first.

The Bug Butcher - Modern Pang
ENSLAVED: Odyssey to the West- this barely sold on console, but it is a really solid game
Gas Guzzlers Extreme - Best vehicle combat on steam
Gorky 17 - fantastic atmosphere and integration of survival horror elements on a turn based strategy game
Heavy Bullets - like most Devolver games it's simple and addictive
Kane and Lynch: Dead Men - I might be one of the few but i find it to be a good story driven game, it's what Volatile tried to do with Reservoir Dogs and failed. I haven't touched the sequel
Kill to Collect - Co-op roguelike game. Needs players but the game itself is great.
Obscure - innovative horror game
Riff Racer -I wasn't so sure about this one during EA. Not too long ago i decided to reinstall the game and as strange has it seems it's like all my problems have been fixed, even though i never sent any feedback. I guess they have been busy addressing all of the community issues.
