Phaorah Rebirth+
It's a fairly recent release on Steam, but I think it deserves a little more attention. It's a metroidvania themed around the good ol' classic of Indiana Jones crypt crawling, instead of one big overworld it's split into levels (the original release was actually episodic) but it encourages backtracking to older levels with new abilities to find collectables. It's rather unique in a sea of platformers and metroidvanias and I enjoyed playing it more than I ever thought I would.

The phrase "hidden and unappreciated" made me instantly think of Armed and Dangerous by Planet Moon, the guys who made Giants: Citizen Kabuto. Lots of humour, and fun gameplay :)

I would say Akuatica out of the Steam games I've finished. It's not one of the best games I've played, but it was quite enjoyable. It doesn't seem well known at all. It's good if you like difficult games with many different types of skill based puzzles.

Space Rangers is great. Recettear is adorable and a lot of fun. Pre-Civilization Marble Age is a good civ game, you can play the first two games in the series on flash on Kongregate. New Star Soccer 5 is a fun arcade soccer/football game.

Spec Ops: The Line is one of the best story driven games I've played and it's so underrated. It has a reputation for having some controversial stuff in it, it's a really real game that will probably leave you messed up for a few hours when you're finished. You'll probably only get about 9 hours of playtime with it unless you want to 100% it but it is so worth the money.

I really liked the saboteur, not sure why it received bad reviews.
I thought it was much better gameplay than assassin's creed, I really liked the races, and the story was pretty great.

I need recommendations for lesser known and underapprecited games that are on Steam or otherwise. These can be games that got less than favorable reviews (and were therefore ignored by many) when they came out, but are actually not that bad, or games that it seems no one's heard of that deserve more attention. I'll start with two of my own. More will follow once I've looked through my collection and I remember more.
The Saboteur
This game is interesting for a number of reasons. It was the last game made by Pandemic studios, who made games like Star Wars Battlefront 1 & 2, the Destroy all Humans games and a few others before they were shut down. The game was doomed from the get-go, with the studio shutting down DURING its development. The game is set in France during World War II, and you play a resistance fighter. The game is very clunky, but it has a lot of interesting ideas, and in many ways it plays like a mixture of Grand theft Auto (with the open world and the driving) and Assassin's Creed (with how you're able to climb every building). The game has a great mechanic where mostly everything apart from the blood will be in black and white in an area until you liberate it. It's kind of a shame that more people haven't heard of it, because it's quite a lot of fun, and worth a look if you're into open-world action games with optional stealth where you can cause lots of mayhem. The biggest flaw with the game is that the DLC that lets you see uncencored titties is not available on the Playstation 3 version anymore.. proof that DLC is one of the worst things to happen to gaming.
Lord of the Rings Conquest
Another Pandemic Studios game, and probably the one responsible for them being shut down by EA. In this game they took what they learned making the excellent Star Wars Battlefront games and put it in the Lord of the Rings universe. The game received a lot of negative press upon its release, and I'd be lying if I said some of the criticism isn't valid. The combat can be very repetitive, the four classes you can choose from get old pretty fast, but if you can get passed that, the game is very, very fun. It lets you play through two campaigns with up to two people, letting you fight in the most epic battles from the movies, but the second campaign is by far the most interesting. In it you control the bad guys, and every mission ends with you killing a member of the Fellowship. IT LETS YOU BURN THE SHIRE DOWN AND SLAUGHTER HOBBITS. The game occasionally lets you control a hero/villain from the series, and massacring people (HOBBITS) as the Balrog or The Mouth or Sauron is really satisfying. The classes they give you all have different uses on the battlefield. The sorcerer's can put up shields to protect their allies, the scouts can turn invisible and insta-kill someone if manage to sneak behind them, the archers provide support from a distance, and the knights charge the enemy head-on. It's a shame that I never got to experience this game online, because I'm sure it would be a lot of fun.
