The only reason I failed is wishlist size (not sure why this is even a thing).

In general, I think "interest in each game on the wishlist" is inversely proportional to wishlist size. The human brain only has so much room, so for most people, every game on their wishlist divides their attention a little bit more.
I'm interested in giving the game to someone who is really excited about the game, and I thought limiting wishlist size was just about the only way to do that.
You seem to be an exception, and there may be a few others, but from reading the comments I think the filter is having the intended effect.

I understand what you mean. What really kills it for me though is lack of uninterrupted time for gaming, otherwise I'd be gaming more.

The sound design is incredible. Probably the best of any game I've ever played. (Even if it's a little strange that the wolves bark...)
Sandbox mode is an interesting story; it wasn't even supposed to be a thing! It was just a test environment where new gameplay mechanics and story elements were going to be tested.
But then it turned out that people absolutely loved Sandbox Mode! It's just you and the wilderness with no scripted story and it just...works.
So the devs decided to go ahead and focus on expanding Sandbox Mode, in addition to continuing to develop Story Mode. That's probably the single biggest reason Story Mode has taken longer than expected.
There are plenty of people on the Steam forum who would be perfectly content if Sandbox Mode was the whole game. And I'm one of them! I will certainly play Story Mode and I suspect it's going to be good, but if they announced they were scrapping Story Mode and just expanding Sandbox Mode forever, that would be 100% fine with me.

Yeah, I can't believe I'm over 700 hours and still going (I have a Voyageur run at 149 days, trying to get to 200).
The game just resonates for me in a way that no other survival game (and very few games of any genre) ever has.

That moment when you clearly remember this game and happily click the link to get a chance on winning it only to realize that I never put it in the wishlist due to it being in EA, was in my follow-list.. balls..

Putting my new build together in a few days, will be glad to be able to start playing (real) games again instead of the stuff thats meant for mobile or a decade old. Anyways thank you for the chance to win this game, it looks really good and would be an awesome game to play on the new system.

As SadisticKitten pointed out recently, The Long Dark is finally releasing its Story Mode on May 4th. (At least we think that's what the timer is for).
(Quick note: I understand wanting a "story", but Sandbox Mode is incredible. It's just you and the wilderness. The sound design is stunning. If you've been putting off installing the game, waiting for Story Mode...do yourself a favor and fire up Sandbox Mode at least once).
