Yeah I know that EA is the publisher. I was hoping that it will also be on steam since the source engine was used for this game.

EDIT: I personally have no problems with Origin, just saying that I think it should be on Steam too since the source engine was made by Valve.

I simply don't want to support the whole "Origin exclusive" thing, even if I alone can't make a difference. Every game should be released on every other platform (yes even steamworks games). My preferred platform is steam and I want all my purchased games to be tied to my steam account. I never play with the DRM-free/Desura games until I get a steam key for them. Release Titanfall on steam and I will buy it if it's any good, that's all I have to say (and I don't care if it is EA's or Valve's fault).

However Steam also has plenty of exclusives. I did read when you said "(yes even steamworks games)," however you still play the Steamworks ones. You have over 2000 hours of gameplay on TF2 according to your Steam profile, however TF2 is only on Steam. While I would say that console exclusives are one of the worst things that has happened to gaming, I can't say the same about if a game is on Steam and/or Origin and/or Uplay. If you have a PC you can still play the exact same game without any difference in gameplay no matter which client you're using. You can easily tell Steam to add a shortcut if you want to a DRM-free game or a game that uses another client and there won't really be a difference.

Since my preferred platform is Steam I don't mind the Steam exclusive titles but I can understand that there are people who are pissed because they have to install it. I even know some people who only buy DRM-free games and torrent the rest. The add non-steam game feature lacks the following: the games can't be seen on my games list, doesn't count my play time, doesn't tag my screenshots, can't backup easily the games, can't write reviews and can't access instantly the community hub if I came accross any problems. If we are talking about DRM-free games than they might not even update automatically when I start them. So I'd rather not use that feature.

There's nothing wrong with Origin. THey fixed most of it's issues, and customer support is better than Steam's.

And to people who are saying it should be on Steam because of Source. Why? Anyone can license an engine. There's literally no reason for it to be on Steam.

I've already posted this like 5 times now.

"Oh no! A game you (presumably) wanted now has gameplay that is entirely unchanged and features that are also entirely unchanged?! Oh the humanity! You can't buy it now!"

Seriously guys, this shouldn't change whether or not you want to buy a game. I got Assassin's Creed: Black Flag along with Splinter Cell: Blacklist for UPlay when I bought my graphics card. I don't like UPlay's download process since you have to download a 30 GB game and then install a 30 GB game, but besides that I don't care that they're on Uplay. I still have the games, and got them for free, and will end up playing just the same amount of time that I would if I had been given Steam versions of them instead.

What the hell are you talking about? I only want 1 library, it's as simple as that.

Who gives a damn what you posted several times? Congratulations, you wasted time.
Oh and I just say 'no' to free games if it's Uplay or Origin garbage, I rather buy them myself to have them in one library. Not like it's a biggie when the sales are going.

Now go moan somewhere else, mr 'omg he doesn't use it I must convince people'. No one gives a fuck. :p

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

As for that last line, I could also tell you "go moan somewhere else" or that no one cares that you won't buy it, but you still posted. I didn't have to resort that because I actually brought up a good point in that there is no reason not to use Origin. If you want one library, then do the "Add Non-Steam Game" option.

And let's go beyond free games for a second:
If somebody gave you a PS4 and a bunch of PS4 games, would you respond with "Oh no thanks, it's not on Steam." I have Steam, Origin, and Uplay just as I have an Xbox 360, a Gamecube, a PS1, a PS2, a Nintendo 64, and a Wii from before I started PC gaming. It would be a waste to throw them away and there's no reason that I shouldn't just change what input my TV is on and turn one of them on if I want to play a game that I have for one of those systems. I won't buy it again on Steam as I already own the game and I don't want to spend $5 just to avoid having to change the TV input or press 1 more mouse click to open Uplay or Origin or to "Add a Non-Steam Game" to my Steam library. If you don't use Origin, contrary to what you may think, it doesn't make you cool. Not using Uplay does not make you cool. And Assassin's Creed IV and the new Splinter Cell, which I got for free, are still brand new and $60 when not on sale on Steam, so have fun waiting for a good enough sale. Remember, not only would you be spending $15 per game in 4 months during a sale (thinking generously here, as, while Steam sales are great and PC games go on sale very soon after they're released, I don't think you can expect anything lower than this for a while for these two games), but those 4 months are 4 months in which you would not be able to play the games that you already own. Also, Black Flag has been on a bigger sale on Uplay than it's been on the Steam store. Just saying.

And the reason I said that I already posted it like 5 times is because it's sort of frustrating how many people can be so stubborn in not accepting a service that there is nothing wrong with and that does not affect the gameplay at all (typically gameplay is why people buy games) just because they think it's cool to hate Origin. Origin has better customer service than Steam and actually has a refund policy.

Now regarding the statement "Uplay or Origin garbage:" This can imply one of two things. The first is that you think the games themselves are garbage. This is obviously not the fact, as apparently before you heard that it was on Origin you were interested in Titanfall. This means that it's the latter explanation, that you think Uplay and Origin are garbage. The way you worded this does not properly reflect this, but it isn't hard to determine what you meant. If you notice, nobody has recently been able to come up with any good complaints about Origin. All complaints that people bring up are just the same old recycled complaints, complaints that either have been fixed by now or that apply to Steam just as much as they apply to Origin. There is not one single reason to hate Origin besides that people think it's cool to because they're stubborn and are too busy fangirling over Steam. I'm not saying that I wouldn't rather have a game on Steam moreso than on another client, though I am saying that if it's on another client it will make no difference to me.

Tl;dr: Either get a good reason (of which there is none) to ignore any client that's not Steam or swallow your pride. If you want to buy this game, buy it as you'll enjoy the gameplay either way.

Keep in mind that monopolies are a bad thing, which is the reason for the Sherman Antitrust Act.

Compare this to if someone gave you an extremely nice PC that was 27 times as good as yours that for some reason you were unable to move into whatever room your PC is usually in (let's just call this Room A) and you never used it because "I only use the computer in Room A." It's the exact same situation.

EA is not only the publisher of the Titanfall - it also own the studio which is making it. In short it's like complaining that Half-Life needs Steam. No surprise here.

Also Origin isn't that bad. I've got about 30 games on Origin (and about 300 on steam, and another 30 on GOG, and 400+ DRM free on CD's and DVD's - I've been collecting them since 1995) and I don't know why the people complain so much at Origin. It's not very expensive, I never had problems with logging in (but I also heven't played new SimCity yet, but it is my second most hated feature of Games For Windows Live) and it doesn't require disc in a drive while playing game (my third most hated feature of GFWL) The delay in loading a game is minimal (my fourth most hated feature of GFWL) and it doesn't log off while playing (my most hated feature of GFWL) Origin is worse than Steam, but it is not tragic. It doesn't ruin the game experience, and it keeps Valve on their toes, because they know that if they will start messing up Steam, most of their clients will move to Origin. So Origin is good even for people who use only Steam.

Switch your brain on for a moment, I know it's hard for someone who plays EA games in 2014 but:

  • Playing EA games, as of the last years, was dumb enough as is, thus nice to avoid if you have some self-respect.
  • Using Origin, for any sentient being, has always been a no-go. Now combine the two, if your brain is still capable of that.

So let me get this straight. A game that someone wants now has gameplay that is entirely unchanged and features that are also entirely unchanged?! And thus now they refuse to buy it?! Oh the humanity!

It's funny how many people dislike Origin, but most of them don't have any reasons. It's this "I like using this thing, so anything other than that is just shit and I refuse to use it" attitude (it's not restricted only to gaming though).
I use Origin, Uplay, Desura, Capsule (GMG) and Steam. I've never had any problems with any of those clients, they're all quite fast and reliable. Although I dislike EA as a company, their products are usually just fine. Also their support is way more helpful than Valve's.

I'm not gonna miss out on a (possibly) good game just because of prejudices.

I think Origin is complete garbage. It requires updates like every three days, doesn't save my log-in info no matter how many times I tick "remember me" (or whatever the hell it says), downloads are insanely slow and unstable and it's overall just very user unfriendly.

Valve improved Steam to a point where people actually like to use it (or they just don't mind), but if EA games weren't tied to Origin, nobody would use this piece of trash.

Permalink

But on the other hand, mine updates far less regularly, saves my log-in info, downloads are up to twice as fast as Steam, it crashes less often and is far faster at everything. YMMV.

Downloads are twice as fast as Steam? How does that work? Download speeds should always be the same during normal operation unless your connection is unstable.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

For years (it's recently started to clear up), Steam has always been slower to download than anything else and has drops in downloading anything, it doesn't matter what download server I use. Origin, however, smooth as silk.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

It's the exact opposite for me. Steam always downloads stably at maximum speed (unless there is a sale) and with Origin I get connection spikes pretty much all the time (i.e. download rate drops down, then goes up again, and so on).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Like I said, YMMV. A lot of Origin's issues nowadays are either identical to Steam's or simple opinion (a lot of which is affected by anti-EA bias).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I don't know what "YMMV" means but the fact that Origin's download rates are awfully unstable for me has nothing to do with my personal opinion, that's just a fact and it's clearly not my fault. My downloads always work well except for Origin so the issue is related to their servers or whatever.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Protip: The fact that something happens to you does not make it automatically a fact. That said, even with my shitty connection, Origin tends to download much, much faster than steam, not to even mention the stellar support (even if they cannot help you, they'll do their best, and not a simple copy/paste).

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Well, if you've got a "shitty connection", you might not be in the position to compare download speeds, right? Not intending to hate, just saying.

And yet my shitty connection reaches its top speeds ONLY in torrents and Origin, Steam likes to jump up and down. Not to mention the updates every twice a week from Steam, but that's irrelevant to the discussion.

"Your Mileage May Vary." Your experiences with something can be completely different to another person's experiences. For example, with Games for Windows Live, I never had a single issue with any of it. It worked perfectly, barring the separate Marketplace client having a massive memory leak. I was happy to use it. Was that proof it was the greatest client/DRM ever? No. For others, it was nightmare after nightmare just getting games to start. YMMV. For me, and many others, Origin is not only not bad, but it's pretty equal if not superior to Steam in many ways.

Even if there are people out there who actually like Origin, it's not even remotely possible that it's superior to Steam. Absolutely not. Steam has so much to offer and you can't even take a simple in-game screenshof with Origin... No, just no.

So the overlay needs work. Okay, and what else? You've suggested one feature Steam has that Origin doesn't. What if you don't take screenshots (or prefer an old-fashioned method)? That's not going to bug you at all. I'd like Steam's extended features considerably more if they didn't take ages to work (slow or broken overlay, the CONSTANT crashing of group chats, the servers disconnecting you at least once a day now, sometimes the screenshots don't work right, the client can sometimes lag considerably especially if you have a lot of games). Origin's basic, but since when was basic ever a bad thing?

Well, even small things like the ability to take screenshots just come in handy and it's always more convenient than using third-party tools.

In my opinion, Steam has a whole lot more to offer than Origin. Screenshots, sales, the whole community thing (including proper profiles, groups, market place), security guard and it just feels more user friendly. A few days ago I was looking for a certain feature on Origin and it took me about 10 minutes to find because their menus are so weird.

Pretty much the only thing I like about Origin is the fact that you can choose whether you wish to download a base game, DLC (for that game) or everything. That's pretty useful for people with small bandwith like me and Steam doesn't allow that, but other than that there is nothing I can think of right now that Origin does better than Steam.

All of these statements apply to me as well. Especially if you sign up for Steam beta, you're gonna get a lot of Steam updates. Steam for me has often just suddenly slowed down and the download speed has started to approach 0 but then it slowly goes back up when it hits like 150 kB/s. Origin would have consistently higher download times. Both may have the same peak, but Origin would stay closer to that peak and more often.

my origin doesnt update as often as you say. steam on the other hand has an update at least once a week, i would say. my auto-login works. download speed is about the same, i would say. is your statement referring to the current version of origin, or did you test it shortly after release and this is what you got back then? i dont like origin too much (mostly because i dont like the idea of having several clients for the same thing), but i cant complain at all about the software.

I honestly have no issue with Origin. The customer support there is MUCH better than Steam. Steam gives you a copy paste robot response. I don't think it has be released on Steam. EA may be a shitty company, but they do have the right to have their own "steam" since they do have a large selection of PC games to where it's okay. I would still like to have it on Steam but I just put a shortcut on steam and then I can still play the game with the steam overlay.
