When I was a kid and learned about Hiroshima and Nagasaki, I remember feeling drained by the waste of lives. Now, with perspective, I believe the only reason we haven't had a nuclear war yet is because the ghosts of Hiroshima scare even the craziest dictator straight. It took all these powerful men the deaths of hundreds of thousands of civilians to see how far is too far. If they had not witnessed the destruction, death and the following years of catastrophe and effects of the radiation, you can bet your ass that the Cold War would have gone atomic in a mere matter of months.
Every year I think of the poor souls who were sacrificed on the altar of violence and power so that it wouldn't happen again. War, what a bitch you are.
