I've found myself on a 3D platformer kick recently blame Yooka-Laylee, that game charmed the hell out of me, btw got a public level 3+ giveaway for it going, and I'm looking for more. Something adventurous and charming, but not too difficult. Something that I can work on over the course of a week or something. And I'm just hitting a wall with figuring out what all else there is.

I've tried out Poi and Ostrich Island, but got bored with them a while back (let me know if they're any good though, I'll try and go back to them). And I've finished Yooka-Laylee, Munch's Oddysee, Psychonauts, and Legend of Kay. And WALL*E and Lilo & Stitch: Trouble in Paradise, but those are movie-based games so who cares. And if we count Snake Pass and/or The Last Tinker, then I've finished those too. But if you want to make an argument as to why I should play them again, go for it.

Now I've only got a PC and a 3DS, but feel free to recommend games on other platforms as well (who knows, I might one day be able to get me a console). And unreleased games, too. Really, just anything. I wanna have a friendly talk about 3D platformers. :D

Jak and Daxter series, Sly Cooper series, Ratchet & Clank series on PS2, PS3 and latest Ratchet & Clank remake on PS4. When we are talking about 3d platformers, i think about consoles)))

Yep, those three series are all quite good. Just fyi though the third Ratchet game is better played on PS2 then in the PS3 collection due to them having removed all post effects (everything that glows) from the PS3 version.

Ty the Tasmanian tiger is pretty good I think, haven't played it myself but been told it's good a lot. I like the sonic adventure games, but don't think I'd recommend them as I can see why some people don't enjoy them

Maybe Trine 3: The Artifacts of Power?
Cheap - Woodle Tree Adventures (was free many times) and Bob Was Hungry (not 3d, but on sale right now). I'm not kidding about Woodle - its not so bad 😊

I finished Unbox after winning it on here. It's cute and quite easy. Might be what you're seeking.
Well, I didn't go for 100% as I usually don't care about collectibles. Just doing challenges and bossfights.

Max: The Curse of Brotherhood - It's 2.5D, but the devs did a good job of making it feel like a 3D platformer, and I REALLY enjoyed it. See my review for more info.

Since you liked Yooka Laylee so much, I highly recommend Banjo Tooie and Donkey Kong 64, both for the N64 (which I know you don't have, but they're two of my favorite 3D platformers!)

They've done a great job on that one overall from what I've seen, but the movement seems slower and less fluid / more clunky then in the original (probably only important for those doing speed runs though).

Rayman games! - The Great Escape and Hoodlum Havoc are great platformers. They both are on GOG, and aren't very expensive.
Also - Taz Wanted - I had great fun with this one, although I don't know if you can find it somewhere

I really liked Darksiders (first installment in the series). And while this is not the usualy cartoon-y style game and many might not put it in this categry, I still found it was an extremely good 3D platformer :)

I recently got Rive in a Humble monthly. It's kind of a bullet hell side scrolling platformer. You have to be VERY precise with your movements, not in a Super Meat Boy way, but because there are things swarming at you while you are avoiding pits and things. It's got a good script, good voice acting and it's colorful.

I'm really enjoying it, but I can only do 15-20 minutes at a time! I know other people probably think it's not that tough, I suck at this kind of game!

Splosion Man was great, too.

Oh, you already tried POI and Psychonauts... well I still have a few recomendations, just not so straight forward.

  • Sonic Lost World (some levels are 2D) don't mind the old reviews for the WiiU version, the PC port cuts a bunch of the fat and tweaks the game to fix the controls and progression.
  • Sonic Generations (a bit over half the levels are 2D) The best from 2 eras of sonic games.
  • A Story About My Uncle (first person) You spend most of your time swinging in the air in this game so I hope you don't suffer from vertigo.
  • Grow Home Why aren't all Ubi games like this? This is great.
  • Castle of Illusion (mainly a 2D platformer but it has some 3D sections) <- This is how you do a remake.
  • Mirror's Edge (first person) More of a parkour game, but it has lots of platforming.
  • NaissanceE (first person, hybrid genre) Despite its looks this game has plenty of jumping and running, it is also a masterpiece of abience in my eyes.
  • Refunct (first person) Short and kinda focused on speedrunning but the controls are so tight that I actually preffer to play it with a controller, and that's weird for a first person game.

Out of curiousity, do you know any of the tweaks to Sonic Lost World off hand? The only ones I am aware of are 60 FPS and HD resolutions, but I have not heard of changes to the controls or progression.

I was thinking of getting it on the WiiU for cheap because of the extra zones, but I'd rather have a PC version especially if the Core experience is superior.

Well, gone are the mandatory motion control gimmicks, the vs mode, the minigames and the 2 nintendo themed DLCs (the Nights one is still there). Instead of the unnecesary fluff they made it so the game would be designed for a x360 controller and to be played one level after the other like a classic sonic game, the game still asks you to have a given number of flickies to unlock the next act but chances are you'll constantly have a surplus of the damn critters. There's still no camera control whatsoever but it's only a problem for mods, the original levels are constructed to not need it.
The only thing the WiiU version has going for it as far as I know are the DLC levels, they couldn't port the Yoshi and Zelda ones for obvious reasons.
I haven't played the WiiU version but I did found it weird to not be running into many of the issues that the reviews complained about and that was why I deciden to compare them a bit, and to my surprisse SEGA fixed a game based on the player's feedback for the first time in ever (although in a port released years later).

PS: just remembered, 100 rings don't give you a 1up on WiiU but they do on PC.

First time seeing NaissanceE mentioned, like.. anywhere! I absolutely love this game! It's definitely not for everyone though, it's very abstract and relies on atmosphere and architecture rather than actual storytelling to explore it's themes

That's what I love about it, it's like an action oriented walking simulator that doesn't push its message into the player's face. The only part I didn't liked was when it turned off the lights and asked me to jump blindly, I felt so frustrated falling to my death time and time again.

Can't go wrong with the Crash Bandicoot trilogy (except for maybe the first one), Spyro trilogy, and Mario 64. I also recommend Pac-Man World 2. Fun game, but can be a pain in the butt at times.
