Yeah, at that time, Skyrim was the most wanted game in SG. And sometimes people tricked other people into a Fortix giveaway by masking it as a Skyrim one.

And Skyrim is the first game on the Steam Gifts Wishlist.

It's... A bit complicated. Being a fairly new user here, I'm not sure of its origin myself.
I assume it has to do with Khalaq's first win on Steamgifts. It's also a top wishlisted game on Steamgifts.

Skyrim was the most wanted game in SG a few years back and giveaways for it was rare.

It was started before I joined the site 2.5 years ago. You're probably going to need to ask those people who joined 3+ years ago about the first instance :P

Oldest googleable appearance of the phrase... Dated 29th January 2012. I don't know if it was legit Skyrim GA however. :)

Probably because lots of people want Skyrim, and so there are people who like to joke like they got it (or make the people who didn't get it feel bad) from the most random and simple sources, such as a key drop. From my experience, the person saying "thanks for Skyrim" didn't actually get Skyrim, they're just trying to make other people in the same chat THINK they did.

Cuz trolling. Meme/inside joke.
It was used to "thank"(in a ironic/sarcastic way) ppl for suspicious/fake giveaways, as some of these were for Skyrim.
Or to thank(in a joke way) for joke giveaways, as some of these were jokes saying it was Skyrim and was badrats, fortix or something that everyone had or didn't want. (As a reference joke to the suspicious/fake giveaways.)
Someone created a suspicious Skyrim giveaway, someone posted "Thanks for Skyrim!" and commented on steamgifts chat or private chat about that or the other way around and it all started.
