OK, I've had an absolutely shitty day (let's just say I'm within minutes of reenacting this scene, only with my laptop replacing the VHS), but my prospects lightened up when I got of extra money to spend. Even better, two sets of awesome games are withing my grasp: the Fallout Collection and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic 1 & 2, none of which I have ever played.

Unfortunately, I only have enough money for either the Fallout collection or the KOTOR games. Any suggestions Or should I wait until my laptop problems are sorted out? (Because there's a good chance I'll won't be able to get Windows on my laptop for the foreseeable future. It's a long story, and recounting it will lead to unnecessary violence)

Okay. I absolutely LOVE the Fallout series. But I'd have to recommend KOTOR Series, because it is extremely fun.

I admit I'm not a big fan of either, but the KotOR games were more enjoyable of those.

I cant believe someone can say this. Fallout 1/2 is more than classic... not that KOTOR is anything less.

Called opinions. I've tried both, but never really got into the Fallout series until the later games sadly. I know many would hate me for this, but I prefer Brotherhood of Steel over the originals. And not Tactics, but the console Brotherhood of Steel. The one with the piss jokes.

I think the fallout games have more replayability but kotor is easier to play for the first time

Fallout 2 is one of my favorite games of all time, but the KOTOR series is more in line with the games of today. Do you like retro or more modern games?

I don't really have any preferences, I can play just about anything. Then again, as I said above, my laptop's been acting up, and I'm not sure if I'll be able to enjoy any of the games I buy when Windows locks me out tomorrow. And since I don't have several hundred dollars to throw at Microsoft, I'm kinda stuck in a bad place atm. (And I tried installing other OSes, but they all failed.) So, yeah, I don't really care about retro vs. modern, the more pressing question is, should I buy when I know my laptop will be crippled (possibly for good), or just wait until I can get it fixed/replaced?

Well, it's not like you couldn't always play the games sometime later on if your current laptop bites the dust soon. It just may be a while.

What exactly is going wrong with your laptop, though? Maybe someone here or over at Tom's Hardware could help you out. You could always have a friend take a look at it, if you know someone that may know what they're doing.

I would throw my money at the laptop

Either of those would be money well spent, but between the two options, I would probably recommend KotOR over Fallout to most people.

It depends on your preference of graphics, combat, movement, and universe...

I have been a Star Wars fan all my life (watched it at 15 months when my mom was sick), so it would be easy for me to just say "Pik KOTOR!!! ITZ DAH BESHTESHT GAYM EVAR!!!!" But no, I will state pros and cons and what I think about the KotOR series (haven't played Fallout much).

First, Fallout. My friend said he played through it, and he said it's pretty good, the only problem with it, and I noticed this from personal play, is that the camera angles and graphics kind of suck... Now before you guys start flaming me telling me I'm a CoD fag only caring about graphics (which is completely untrue, I'm a Halo Whore and only care about story/gameplay), let me explain it. In Fallout, it's not a 3D engine, they use techniques to make a 2D screen, seem 3D. The camera angle kind of sucks, it's in one position all the time, and it's really annoying when you can't see the stupid rat behind the wall so you cant do anything... As for story and gameplay, I didn't play too much of it, and neither did my friend, but he said from what he played, it was really fun at first, but it got boring and monotonous with all the walking. And the last thing, the universe... The Fallout universe is an amazing universe with its own story to delve into and all sorts of stuff to discover. But, like I said before, I was practically born watching Star Wars, so I naturally understood and enjoyed that universe more...

Now for KotOR... KotOR is great, and I have loved every minute of it. The graphics are much, MUCH better (if you're that kind of guy), and the camera angles are WAAAAAY better... The graphics are obviously actual 3D graphics, no special smoke and mirrors using fake shadows to make it appear 3D. The camera angles are better in the sense that you can move it around so there's no trying to see if that stupid little rat is behind that wall, you just move your camera to a better position. The story is great. It's already based upon existing lore from the movies and other books, so you can expect to have all sorts of awesome story quests and additional side quests. Now, I did play this substantially more than Fallout, but I did end up getting bored, so I left for a while expecting just to come back and get everything back to normal. Nope... KotOR is one of those games that you have to either finish everything in an area before you leave for a long amount of time, or you have to have great memory to remember what to do... I recently went back to start where I left off, and the quest logs didn't help me remember what I was doing, I just remember something about a guy in court and me finding info... And I have no clue where I was going... So if you want to play this game, you might want to make straight runs and write down what you wanted to do, or you might lose sight of it (unless I have ADHD and didn't know it).

Combat... Ah yes, most people favorite part of video games sadly, but it must be discussed... I had to say it after everything else because the two systems are VERY similar, and you just have to decide which you like more.

In Fallout, the combat is turn-based, you shoot a couple of times, and then whatever attacks, then you, then back, and if you have more people, it goes ALL the way around, so a big fight could take a good thirty minutes to an hour (or so I've heard/seen). In KotOR, the combat is similar, in the sense that it's turn-based, but it's different in the sense that you can actually turn off turn part, and I just think it's a little better. The combat in Fallout is done by clicking the different buttons until they actually do something (at least for me), and in KotOR, you select an attack type from melee, ranged, force, and thrown. I don't do much in non turn-based combat within KotOR, I like being able to think about my next move and such, but you basically click buttons while your enemy is wailing on you. So both games require clicking buttons... Over... And over... And plus, the inventories of both suck... In fallout, you have to click the up and down buttons and it's annoying, in KotOR you just scroll, but there is really no organization (which sucks for us OCD people).

So the final verdict, KotOR is a very fun game, and it's easier to pick up and play, but playing through it again, I'm not sure about (haven't actually finished it). Fallout, is much, MUCH slower, but you have a ton more freedom... Also, I'm sure in Fallout, you can go back through and do one little thing different and it makes your game COMPLETELY different... Not too sure though... SO KotOR if you want more lore (at least I think so) and Fallout for a big time waster (not waste in a bad way, waste like it takes a while).

Oh, and notes about both, some people (including me) had a problem with Fallout where the colors were screwed up, and there was a fix but I can't remember what it was... And then for KotOR, you can't play in fullscreen on Windows 7, or it will crash at the beginning, and any time a cutscene happens... The fix for that is adding a line to your .ini, this info can be found all over the community hub for it (this goes for both KotOR I & II).

Oh, and one final thing, KotOR is more linear in a way. In KotOR, it's a linear questline that you will have to follow, but the quests will fork and you can do side quests and you can become good or evil (depending on how you treat people and such). But in Fallout, I think it's a little more free, but the quests are all timed so you can't be a quest whore and grab every last quest and work on all of them, you have to complete one at a time...

I've had KotOR running on 7 in fullscreen without it crashing and without editing anything... Fluke I guess.

You might want to consider the fact that the Fallout series is already available on GOG.com anytime you wish to buy the no-DRM version. The KOTOR series, in contrast, is only available on Steam...for now.

If you're going to stick to Steam, however, then you have a difficult choice to make. Do you want a 2-D apocalyptic RPG which offers great replayability? Or do you want a 3-D Star Wars action game (complete with voice acting) you can only play through maybe twice before you shelve it? Both games are highly entertaining (you won't care about Fallout's graphics once you get "into the game"), but they each have their own style.

KotOR 2 easily can be played 4 times and each time you'll get slightly different game (example: different team member for male or female, that's 2, and different team members actions near ending depending if good of evil, that makes it 4). So don't say it's "one time game".

But I would still prefer Fallout :)

Both game series are marvellous.
But whenever you would play KotOR 2 do not forget to get TSL Restored Content Mod. Without it game has big plot holes.

But gamersgate also has a -75% on Borderlands 2, if that's more your kind of game and have friends who also play it. Soloing Borderlands is terrible experience.

Fallout 1&2 are my favorite games up to this day. Though you might start with KOTOR series, they are mighty good too. And then, when you have more money, immerse yourself info fallout classics)

Also, Fallout is isometric,a so this may not please you as would glorious 3-dimensional KOTOR. (On a side note, I still prefer F1 and F2 graphics to new fallouts;))

Apples and oranges.

Why anyone would want to choose between two of the most amazing things when they can have both, is anyone's guess. I'd say flip a coin for which one to start with, they're equally good. And once you get enough money to get the other, then do that.
