Isn't Long Dark also devoid of story and objectives?

Honestly Stranded deep was the only one that I have played but the long dark looks like it has a vast verity of items and landscape.
Stranded deep has only a couple islands. (but I like the physics of the boats)
A game that you would like greatly if you like survival, would be The Forest:

That's your personal opinion and going by the reviews a rather unpopular one.
I for one found it awesome and refreshing, for once a game where there isn't some evil or monster enemy, but just you vs nature.
For OP; It's mainly an adventure/exploration game with survival elements as it currently stands, the survival aspect is getting reworked and stuff added but that wasn't what made me love the game, what made me love the game was loading a save game, looking around my island to pick the next island to head towards and loot and making sure i've got my bearings right whilst at the same time frantically keeping an eye out for tropical storms/mist and what time it is.
It really is a cast away simulator, so if you're looking for something with action and battles this isn't the game you're looking for, however if you're looking for something casual and you like exploring and dodging sharks with a superpowered 8-engine wooden rafts then yeah, this is what you want.

thats very well said and pretty much exactly my opinion too.. ^^ stranded deeps is not like the others really.. well really all of them have strong differences anyways but it is like you said or even if u wanted to diss it in that way sure one could call it a "walking simulator" or really more in this case a "paddle'n simulator" lol however it is very peaceful and calm for the most part in comparison to the others.. which in my opinion makes it pretty fun and a more relaxing game.. my vote (explained here) still went for long dark though.

The long dark has awesome atmosphere and is shaping up to be a brilliant game.

Wow, there are 75% off coupons floating around for Salt. How the fuck did I miss out on this one?

The Long Dark is the best right now, though that is largely due to its development status - its simply further along.
In time, I can see Stranded Deep becoming interesting, but as it stands there simply is not much to do. It lacks structure and coherence.
Don't know too much about Salt, but from what I've seen it doesn't stand up to The Long Dark.
If anything a game like "Subnautica" or "The Forest" may deserve consideration in this list, though much like Stranded Deep they aren't that necessarily 'polished' or 'structured'.
They are promising in their own right, but lack that certain touch that differentiates them from the others.
I also believe the atmosphere and artstyle do The Long Dark a lot of favours, the lack of animations and such in the other titles make them feel incomplete - by going for a stylized view instead The Long Dark circumvents that problem and allows focus on actual gameplay rather than mere aesthetics.

last time i saw a fairly similar post to this (though choices were not as good imo) i had pretty much voted for stranded deep, BUT thats only because i had not bought the long dark.. well.... i read others pretty much said long dark better then stranded deep so ofc i had to find out for myself =) i certainly had zero disappointment in buying the long dark... my vote has majorly changed from stranded deep (though better graphics is true) to the long dark (the ambient-like graphic style at first was a deterrent for me however it very rapidly grew on me after just minutes of gameplay) however both are extremely promising... i tried the salt demo (thankfully there is that option on that game) and that game maybe great but that type of graphics style i could not get behind at all honestly so i cannot really say much there..
also since neither are finished yet my vote still could change yet again, the developers roadmap on stranded deep seems quite nice, the never ending open world nature if mixed with multiplayer like it seems they plan to do could make it one of the best of all time... only time will tell though.
edit: fix typos & added the also..

The main problem I have with all of these games is that potential buyers can't tell them apart. If I've got money burning a hole in my pocket, I want to know what kind of gaming experience I'm going to get with each one. None of the opinion threads I've read on SG have managed to accomplish this, yet. My best guess from everything that other people have said looks something like the following.
....................................Exploration........Crafting........Fighting.......Survival......CO-OP.....
Rust...........................................................X.................X................................X...........
The Forest............................X.....................X.................X...........................................
Salt......................................X....................X..................................X...............................
Stranded Deep......................X.....................X...........................................................................
The Long Dark......................X......................X..................................X...............................

Yes, that is much nicer. I forgot we have tables, now. D

In Salt you can fight pirates like Jack Sparrow, right?

I have no idea. I just made the table. Ask Khalaq.

i would have to say these charts are pretty accurate (except i dont know on salt, rest i do own and have at least a few+ hours each in).. except it is very liable to change in fact at least according to stranded deeps developer roadmap they fully intend on adding multiplayer so i would imagine co-op in the future on that one.. also the survival column is a bit sketchy depending on what mode you play ea of those in or what exactly you consider survival as well.. for instance the long dark is practically no challenge at all in survival if u play on the casual/lower difficulties, same for the forest and its vegetarian mode and vegan modes.. also stranded deep tends to get more difficult to survive against mother nature the longer you are stranded, so it to could very much be tossed in the survival category after playing it a few hours.. and all of this ofc is still pretty much opinion based as well, one person could consider something difficult in one of those categories and another could say its easy and practically doesnt even match a category.. overall though i'd say that is prob one of the best charts ive seen and would have to agree as they sit in their current state..

Thanks for all the replies. This forum is more helpful than those extremists and fanboys on Steam community forums.

i dont quite understand your logic.. "some survival vs some survival"? well that could be the same for anything.. "some football team vs some football team" world war('s) are just "some country vs some country vs some country" and i cant think of a single example that cant just be flipped like that.. why waste your time making a comment like that? lol

keyword: generic
my point being that I find most survival games very uninspired and...generic, it's just the newest bandwagon that every developer is jumping on because it's easy to get people to buy your game even in earlier development periods, none of them stand out to me at this point
Comment has been collapsed.
ok so your point was "none of them stand out to me at this point" but none of those were just "some generic", since there is a list of named games.. generic would be something unnamed or unspecific.. considering he named specific names then 'generic' does not fit here..
edit: removed definition of 'generic'
Comment has been collapsed.
you are taking it way too literal.
they all seem the same, nothing about them stands out, hence they all seem like the same survival game, yes they have a specific name but take that name away and nothing about them seems all that different, hence I called them generic.
Comment has been collapsed.
nah i understand what your saying, but coining it 'generic' is just in a way dissing it when u have not even tried it.. there is nothing wrong with that, those games or their style or whatever is not for everyone, and i completely agree about the bandwagon and their hype it seems quite unjustified.. but there is not really any need to generalize them, he was wanting to know how they differ from one another, not how you can generalize them lol =)

Which is better? Anyone here played all three already?
I'm leaning towards Salt because of the Zelda graphics and you actually get to fight pirates Jack Sparrow style.
Stranded Deep looks like Far Cry 3 without any enemies so I don't know.
Mixed feelings about Long Dark.
