I read some reviews for MP-games and now many games have reviews of BP (battlepass) than how game is played or how is "fun" factor. It is me only oldschool for playng MP-game for fun and not for BP?
BP for me is literally big fomo+second work. My accomplishment is getting better in game than have 100lvl cosmetic
I`m old or just have specific tastes?

I'd say you're both.

We old got specific tastes from Doom, Quake, CS, Halo, CoD4 (pick the one that got you into multiplayer)

Preach on though, maybe good times will come back🎮

QIII was so good (my first MP game as well) I got my ass kicked by dorm roommates in challenge pro mod all the time.

I stopped playing MP as I got more interested in games' mechanics and storytelling, but yeah, I do think that as kids I wanted to play games everyday because they were fun, engaging, not to tick off a bunch of items on the to-do list to get a hat

The good times came back and no one cared. Tribes, Quake Live, Quake Champions, DOOM 2016 Multiplayer, Robot Roller-Derby Disco Dodgeball, etc.

Arena shooters in specific seem to have a lot of people asking for them to return, but when they do, those games die with people saying they never even heard of them. Maybe bad advertising on their end.

I tried Quake Live and Champions, and DOOM Eternal's MP

Quake Live was as true to Arena as it could, but it didn't grab much attention - I think the fact that they initially tech-demoed it as being able to be run in the browser didn't help, and when it got onto steam, it was too late.

Champions I think was trying to cater to both nostalgic arena shooter fans and Overwatch crowd, failing to attract either.
DOOM still has potential I think - the 2 demons on 1 slayer mode grabbed me for a while, then again Eternal has all the modern fluff of daily and weekly tasks, seasons with new skins that once they're gone, they're gone, trying to FOMO players into playing.

I keep my hopes up, as we're still in the PS1/low poly period on the nostalgia so arena shooters should be next

Maybe both. I'm an older gamer and I regard fun as the most important aspect. Maybe not multiplayer, I haven't played MP since microtransactions became a thing, but the idea is the same. For example, I don't care for cards or achievements on Steam, it's all about the fun factor for me. Thankfully, I'm not that susceptible to FOMO, I'd be stressed and conflicted if I were.

For achievements I like when requires some challenge (speed-run, hard mode, no death run) BUT dislike dumb grind like "crouch 1B times".
For FOMO: inst-skip.

From my pov additional content adds to the fun and if they call that a 'battle pass' then so be it. Of course it's stupid to play a boring game just to grind for silly cosmetics, but if there is a good game that is fun to play and you get some nice cosmetics while playing, why not? For example my favorite game Deep Rock Galactic also has battle passes now (it's all free, no money involved). I would play the game anyway, now I unlock stuff while I play. There is no downside to this.

But yes, there are a lot of games that are just a huge, boring grind and that only rely on battle passes to keep people addicted. And of course those battle passes are only there for a limited time and if you don't unlock everything before the time runs out you will NevER HaVE tHe ChANcE to GeT iT aGaIN!!!!111!!!! And some people fall for that.

Yep I play Halo Infinite now. Core gameplay is good AND BP have no timer (2 things other studios can copy). Halo MCC have same system: BP have no timer (I started after year and that`s why I like this)

I don't necessarily mind cosmetic unlocks in games. Quite like the dopamine hit of seeing that I get a shiny new trinket to put on my character (it's a pretty cheap way of getting a dopamine hit, but it works). Put a timer on it though, and it immediately stops being fun and becomes a chore. So yeah, battle passes are really not fun. At least I can deal with the FOMO, I don't feel like I "need" the battle pass and the cosmetics they bring, but they've effectively removed a fun part of the game for me.

Same I dont mind cosmetic unlocks (especially in FPS) until: -no timer -dont affect gameplay
-not SUPER grindy (like play 1.000h for gloves)
It is good in Elite: Dangerus: You can grind cosmetic but do it in your own pace

I play Rocket League like that. Its tons of fun, I just dont care about the pass. Whenever a nice drop comes by, I am happy for it, but its not necessary to enjoy a match. Its just a nice extra for me.
I agree though, older titles with no pass or anything like that, specifically before the age of hero shooters/specialists felt more fun generally, where the given playable characters felt more balanced and relied more on your skills rather than a wide variety of class specific abilities. I mean, the old Battlefield solution of classes with some limitations and specific gears worked fine, but since then it feels like shooters want to resemble MOBAs more and so make the matches kind of uneven. And I am a LoL player for about ten years now, I like the genre, but i dont want its influence everywhere, especially not in shooters.

I also agree with you, battlepasses are a shit tier scummy strategy and they are everywhere but at least, some games do it correctly. I will get hate for this but, right now, Fortnite's battlepass is hella easy to level up, to the point that, after even getting all the rewards like a month or so ago, I enter the game ocasionally to play for fun.

Problem is, BP appeals to those who really don't get in the whole "multiplayer" fun.
I enjoy BP on Dead by Daylight. The progression and rewards are appealing, but I wouldn't play as much as I do if it wasn't for the BP obviously. leveling up characters, and unlocking new tiers of skills appeals to me.

It's the only multiplayer game I can consistently play. Other titles like Halo Infinite, etc, I just stop playing. Either progression is slow, or the maps become boring, etc.

I've been gaming for more than 30 years - that takes care of the "during my time..." snooty BS that really doesn't mean anything to anybody else rather than the feeling of imagined superiority with myself. I personally couldn't care less about battle passes. My character could be buck naked for all I care especially in multiplayer FPS games. However, I don't look down on people who does. "Fun" is whatever enjoyment you can takeaway from the game. I leave the gatekeeping to others. I don't mind BP per se especially if it doesn't intrude with my experience. You feel weighted down with all that money in your wallet? Knock yourself off.

Companies keep cutting more and more of in-game content and baiting you to earn / buy it.
Its a far cry from Shareware where you got full episodes for free, or complete games where you could unlock everything at your own pace.

Understandable. I also have that problem of wanting to get everything if I already paid for it, so it would just turn into a second job.

While I sort of understand your point, I'm a bit confused considering you play Halo Infinite. The BP itself has no duration it seems. But I feel a large part of that was due to all the season 1 complaints. As season 2 gives you enough to purchase the next season BP now, but season 1 didn't do this. And I believe if you didn't buy the Season 1 BP, you actually can't go back and continue it as a free player without purchasing the premium track. I finished level 100 free already so I can't verify that claim.

But how are weekly ultimate challenges not FOMO? Especially when tied to events.

For example, this week, there's a stance reward. To me, it's whatever, but in order to get it, you'd have to also clear the Elimination event because they block weekly ultimates with event challenges. There was even a discussion about this last season with the community manager I believe.

I'd argue only the BP itself is the non FOMO aspect of the game. We can make an argument for not caring about the event rewards, but if that's the case, then couldn't the same argument be made for any of those other games with an expiring BP? Just don't care about the BP.

I'm not really being critical towards you and the game. I hope you continue to enjoy it. And I hope you're never in any match against me since you're someone who prioritizes getting better over getting shinies like me haha.

Like I said I not hate BP as per see but I dislike add FOMO to BP and even I dislike how weakly challenges works there. (FOMO element). In H:I BP only 2 good elements are: return of credits (pay 1k, return 1k) and non-FOMO aspect.
If you have non premium BP is Sezon 1 DO NOT choose Sezon 2 until you complete! Return on premium only < yep I dislike too

I already completed the free tier of S1. I'm just listing several aspects to the FOMO aspect.

I don't want someone to read into Halo Infinite and start it up thinking there's no FOMO whatsoever. It's there just as much as it is in other modern games. Heck, season 2 is adding some minor story to this interference event. Probably nothing actually worthwhile, but if someone wants to experience this in 2023, they'll have to youtube it at best.

But if they enjoy the core gameplay, then they'll be fine.

It's highly likely the higher ups really. They saw an opportunity. I'm glad it is free to play but this kind of stuff generally comes with it. Enough negative criticism has made them improve things, but I highly doubt they can walk back some of the core annoyances because selling challenge swaps is a part of their business model.

As you mentioned, the battle pass is just a part of the fear of missing out on content, In addition to this stupid daily login rewards, pre-purchase awards, kickstart awards, "events", digital deluxe edition rewards, DLC exclusive maps, or day one plaything.

As a gamer, I am sick of all of these as they all ruin the fun out of it, and make the game a prison, but if I was working in the management of a game company I would go for all of them to milk this new generation as much as I can.

Reminder, after the 2000s, game companies are like regular companies, who just try to make a product and earn money, and game companies now become richer than any other companies. There are checklists defined as 'include this' and leave bugs to focus on release and dlcs/seasons. Developers are doing their job, but do not tell me they are doing their job as passionate or as a "gamer" as they did in the 1990s.

I cut my FPS teeth on OG UT way back in the day so most of the newer FPS don't do much for me. Nothing says fun like telefragging, blowing someone up who's hiding around a corner by detonating the shock rifle's secondary as it passes them, or shooting opponents in the face with the flak cannon's secondary fire. I don't mind battlepass though, as long as it's not some limited time "DROP EVERYTHING ELSE AND DO THIS RIGHT NOWWWWWWWWWWWW OR YOU MISS IT 4 EVA!!!!!!!" BS. If it's something that I can do while playing normally, why not?

Games with battle passes start to feel like chores if the core gameplay isn't fun. FOMO is definitely a thing and can become an addiction. I've started to care less and less because other things are more important like spending time with my girlfriend and being productive. I have a very addictive personality when it comes to collectables or anything grindable, especially if I spend money on a battle pass I feel obligated to finish it. At one point I was juggling multiple games with BPs, COD, Destiny, Fortnite and Hearthstone and it became too much. It took life priorities to realize I'm just grinding for no reason, I was playing these games not for fun but for junk that I probably wouldn't even use the majority of the time. I love video games and I have a backlog probably bigger than most peoples because the endless grinds take up so much time, I'm glad I'm getting away from that mentality and going back to playing games for what they should be, fun.

-IF I want back to MP game because is FUN I know is game is worth my time.

Depends on how they implement the battlepass imo .

I have it in my shitty Gacha games and its a hit and miss.

On one hand you have something like Azur Lane , where its just added rewards and thats all it is , it doesnt really make you play the way any difefent to get the full potential of the game.

Then we have something like the Dota2 ones , where it literally force you to do specific things in game which may or may not be the optimal thing in the situations ... which i think are the bad ones cause you are basically game ruining :)
