Securom and Safedisc actually used an exploit to work which is fixed in Win 10. I have at least 75 retail games that won't work due to this :(

uhm yeah, but what kind of games are they? There are a few older good games ported to the platform but most of the games are freemium junk.

I'm not sure what argument you're tying to make here but I for one wouldn't want gaming on Linux go down the path of android gaming

I think its simple, Ms its making steam running bad, steam moves to his SteamOS (linux), gammer community leave Windows to go linux, devs starts making AAA that no one purchase, because you know, they are for windows but gammers are on linux now... so devs starts making games for linux TOO. Obviously its an utopia that wont happend, but its a reminder that we (as a mass of people) have the power

I just checked the steam store and there are currently over 2400 games that are available on Linux. Including counter-strike, civilization, borderlands, team fortress, payday, divinity, binding of isaac, shadow of mordor, FTL, Tropico, Metro, Hotline Miami...

I didn't (and I heard metro is a pain on windows too ^^).
But Team Fortress 2 and Civilization Beyond Earth work great :D
So I guess it's just a few exceptions.

Probably Steam is one of the main selling points of Windows right now.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Nope. PC Gaming is tiny part of Windows sales. Would be interesting to learn how many gamers bought original Windows :P

Where Windows make money is businesses.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Right, what I meant was that Windows is the main OS for PC gaming without a doubt and Steam the biggest platform of PC gaming, so basically one cannot live without the other unless a dramatic change happens.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

What you don't understand is that Microsoft CAN live without Steam very easily, because Windows and other Microsoft products are mostly used by businesses, not gamers. :)

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

You are right, and maybe I'm too fool to think about MS actually caring for users, but there are ten million windows users every day on Steam so that is a lot of people to piss off their business won't even fell it, but their (again maybe I am a fool) PR will be damaged.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Mate, those are extremely low numbers. Windows is currently running on roughly 90% of all computers on the planet (regardless of its version). There are approximately 2 billion computers on the planet.

If Steam has 10 million users, on 10 million PCs, that's 0.5%. Would you really be astonished if they didn't care about 0.5%?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

And still they wants to get some of those numbers (DX12, MS Store exclusives) because they give more money than other software divisions of MS, remember that they don't do only OS.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No they don't. :) Consumer software and hardware don't generate anywhere near as much revenue as their commercial/business shares. Do some googling before you talk. Also, Steam doesn't generate revenue for MS, because developers, publishers, and gaming platforms don't require a special MS license in order to develop/publish games on Windows.

You were right, omg i cannot believe that Office almost makes more money than Windows and Xbox together, even more money than server products... Still gaming, if it isn't the most important activity to the company, is very profitable and they are trying to get some of the forgotten (by MS) PC market, but I don't think that Tim Sweeney got it right.

The main problem is that Sweeney says that Windows is making Steam worse. I can honestly say that Steam is making Steam worse on its own. Sure, MS have pushed/forced Window 10 and other "gimmicks" down the consumer's throats, but it's only natural to want to keep moving forward and leave the past behind.

Sweeney predicts that it would take about 5-10 years. We can barely know what's going to happen in the next few months, let alone years. In my opinion, it's nothing more than a false supposition. Time will tell, though.

Gaming is such a small part of the overall Windows ecosystem it's almost an irrelevence. There's money to be made so they're trying to change that with the xbox and Windows tie in but MS would barely feel a bump if Steam went away. Frankly they could tick along quite happily if gaming as a whole went away.

Valve has turned into a corporate nightmare so it's nice someone is finally stepping up. Just a shame it's MS.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Believe me if Valve wasn't aggressive with Origin and Uplay they won't do anything against MS. Again or I don't know how to express things or I'm wrong, but Microsoft of course won't be affected by Steam going out, but their common users will do and Steam would basically be over in a case like that only game devs could decide if developing for Linux or staying with MS Store.

nah, the point is still valid. Windows is dominant (though that's more due to Compaq than due to Microsoft) and Office is near-universal. Just about every other product line they've tried, they're at best in second place, and usually not even.

the guy, as usual, is talking shit.

windows in the past has gotten hit for being anti-competitive... IF they ever did that, they get taken the court, and they WILL lose (not a maybe, they WILL...) Microsoft just simply can NOT hold companies to ransom like that and force all publishers to push all games through THEIR store, they would get hammered so hard legally.

besides, microsoft has little to no interest in pc gaming anyway.. they always claim they do for the initial period around a new OS launch, promising all the great things they'll do just to get gamers excited about moving to the new OS, but once that period is over, they swiftly lose interest...

but not to do the work :) remember how they came out of the gate with a hiss and a roar when.. ws it vista? vista and dx10 i think? and then how when windows 8 came out, microsoft was going to 'save pc gaming'? same nonsense every time

theres loads of money to be made in pc gaming, but each OS generation, MS has talked a big game but ultimately just doesnt know what to do with it, opting instead to put it in the 'too hard' basket. By all accounts their windows store thing is a terrible system that no one likes and they dont even know how to fix it. In the end they just stick to consoles where they already have a nice chunk of the market, and only need to compete with sony. On pc they just cant beat steam.. hell, i doubt they could beat EA and Ubisoft if valve wasn't even in the picture.
