Actually it does.
The profile's price has dropped by almost half since the auctions started.
With a lot of the less popular games, the gap between the top end and the low end of the "winning" set is very high. You can be in the top 100 on some of them with 50 gems. That doesn't mean you'll win for that. But it does say that not many people seem to be interested in the game.

Sadly trading with russians is almost dead, and valve is going/just did a restriction on trading with keys from market. Making them untradable for 7 days from purchase on market. Also according to this site the game hasn't been on a big sale (NL cheapest price was about €11-) so it IMO a huge profit (since I only spend 70 cents to get the gems).
Also you get it in your inventory, but its untradable.

I gave my cousin my tf2 keys, so he sold them, and he can buy me games after on sale(he lives in Russia), but for trading yeah, you need to give first the keys(in case they're tradable), and then, they buy you the game and send via gift, too much trust, so you need to do it with trader with a lot of rep, so yeah is pretty much dead, also for new traders gaining trust will much more harder, also all games that released since like October are region locked by default.

No it won't. Holy shit you don't know how wrong you are :D

I got Meltdown and Letter Quest for 3400 gems total. $16 for basically $4. Might not be considered great games by the standards of most people, but they're enjoyable little games which I can also let my nephew play without worry of mature content, plus they're both fairly new so the odds of getting either on sale for more then 50% off is slim I think. In the end I worked it out to 75% off the retail price of them.

I didn't found any game that was worth buying for me, all games I'm interested aren't worth, because sale price is better, and the cheap ones that for some ppl worth will just end up on sale or bundle anyways. If someone got the gems for free, then he/she could just sell them and get more money than the games worth, at least when price of gem packs was good. Unless I get it for trade.
Meltdown was already 2 times in bundle, and Puzzle Quest wouldn't worth to me even for 1$. Well that game the other guy said, "Void Destroyer", could be worth, for trading at least. Maybe Sacred 3, but not on all bids. I was looking at games like Deadfall Adventures too, since it cost 4$, not worth, and others same, like World End Economica, etc.

Shame I didn't catch the bundle with Meltdown. But yah, understandable if you didn't bother. Most the bids on games that are more popular would have been of higher value then the games retail price, which is just insane. Only reason I did the 2 I did is because it worked out to basically 75% off for me, but if I couldn't find any games I'd play for a huge discount, I wouldn't have bothered. I'm cheap like that, otherwise I would have went for Skyrim LE, CSGO and more, but those bids were just wow. Will prob get a lot of good games 75% off during sales into january.

Not necessarily true. There are some games with less than 2000 gems top bid that are (theoretically) worth more even at lowest sale price than the amount of gems required to win it. Of course they are probably crap games.

The Typing of the Dead: Overkill Collection, for 30,001 gems, hehe... I've only spent $7-8 to get it, and that's about the price it will be at during the Winter Sale, so I'd say it was worth it.
Oh, I also got the badge! :P

Thank you! <3
Unfortunately this round wasn't succes. Hopefully it will be win in 43 minutes, since I'm already 79th! Maybe I will raise the bid a bit to improve my chance(currently 60 gems), what do you think? Current highest is 4500 (last win was 8000) - if the pattern remains the same, I will eventually win, that's for sure.

Unless you are in the top quarter I kind of doubt you will win. Especially since people can (reportedly) re-bid on the same auction even after winning it once. I expect people to raise the winning bid back up with their extra gems after winning other auctions.

IMO, just start bidding at the 50th round. Most of your rich competitors has fewer gems left.

i saw someone won all 5 rounds of a bundle game. why? cause gaben. :|

People paying around $20 for a $10 game makes me think they are either morons or this Gem auction is HERESY! Probably a bit of both.

Actually I consider these auctions as Valve's master move. Just look how fast people started buying out emoticons and backgrounds in order to turn them into gems. Then they started placing bids. Not many people are aware that 20 000 gems are worth around 10 euro... well now it is even more. Yet they place bids of 100 000+ gems which means 50 euro + for games that often are not worth even half of that.
There is no reason for placing bids besides getting an auction winner badge.

People are doing stupid things for badges. Ever heard of people wasting tens or hundreds of hours to get all achievements in a game? (or alternatively, use cheating software to appear as having completed all achievements?)

Actually, big majority of the games are equvalent to 85% off and more, it is actually much better than a seasonal sale.

i'm not into this. hopefully it's not a big thing. last time i said that, it was the coal thing and after i regretted it.

I thank all those retards buying stuff to turn into gems for buying my useless marketplace crap.

What did you win, if anything?
What's your tactics to make sure you win?
I'm in line to maybe, potentially, if all goes well, win something in round 10 or so... let's see how that goes :-)
Update: pulled my gems out and sold 1k yesterday, and just put another 1k on the market, I'm left with 122 gems now... meaning I didn't win, and will not win, but would've won if I had left my 2k on the game I was originally bidding on (Prophour23, wishlisted).
I see lots of you were luckier, or just simply better at it. It's amazing what you guys are winning! :-)
