So my boyfriend and I have been looking at "must see movie" lists and randomly picking off them in order to discover some great movies we've never seen. Problem is that most of those lists contain mostly older films, and he is not used to old films like I am. We are trying to make a list of old and newer films that are considered great.

I know the question is a bit subjective, but we trust normal people (you guys) over critics. :P

TL:DR We would love to hear what your favorite movies are. Or movies you think everyone should see. Hopefully we'll get a good mix of older and modern films. :)

Also, Blade Runner 2049. Don't want to spoil anything, but the love story there must have been the most touching thing I've seen in 2017, if not the last few years.

I was never very knowledgable about movies but here are a couple of movies I think you might enjoy:

Scent of a Woman
Kelly's Heroes

And here for a quite old movie but worth because of Christopher Lee: Dracula A.D. 1972

Thank you for the sequel! I really enjoy going through the first one :D

So far I have rated 2031 movies, series and episodes. Those are the only movies that I rated 10/10:

The King's Speech
The Lives of Others
Hotel Rwanda
The Hidden Blade
American History X
It's a Wonderful Life
V for Vendetta
Crash
Pride & Prejudice
Dances with Wolves
WALL·E
Kung Fu Hustle
The Shawshank Redemption
12 Angry Men

And as you are a couple, here an extra with my highest rated romantic movies. ;)

When you say "must-see", I think of Groundhog Day, The Truman Show, and I suppose La vita e bella (Life Is Beautiful). Profoundly moving movies about life that are also continuously funny throughout as well as graceful and meaningful.

Oh, and if by some chance you haven't seen Dumb and Dumber, I would say that's probably my #1 comedy must-see.

A few more of the best that I have seen and that I feel could use some more exposure:

  • Stoker (a horror-thriller, I guess, but nothing too hardcore, more chilling than anything, and fantastic cinematography, also a mystery that unravels thrillingly)
  • Please Give (comedy-drama, fairly light-hearted, fairly low-key, a tiny bit dark)
  • A Single Man
  • Une place sur la terre (French)
  • Seven Psychopaths
  • The Party... (1968, Peter Sellers, comedy)... the last time I saw this one was a good 10 or so years ago, so it's not exactly fresh in my memory, but I enjoyed it quite a bit, even though I thought it was a bit weird at the time, too, so I'm pretty sure it's pretty great

Conversely, even though these were very popular, I thought they were just fantastic: I don't know how you feel about superhero movies, but I'm convinced anyone could enjoy The Dark Knight, Ant-Man, and The Guardians of the Galaxy (and its sequel) without much background. I had virtually none with Ant-Man and GotG. The Dark Knight is just an action-drama masterpiece and the other two/three are hilarious as well as, actually, touching. I've really enjoyed the vast majority of the superhero movies Marvel has been putting out the last 10 years, but Ant-Man and GotG are probably among the best and the most accessible.

I like horrors and sometimes dramas :)
If you'd be up for some very old, silent movies, I can wholeheartedly recommed Metropolis and Cabinet of Dr. Caligari <3

If you'd prefer something more modern, then I suggest John Carpenter's The Fog or House of Wax with Vincent Price :)

By the way, just watched a drama/thriller kind of movie that was on the TV: Identity. Pretty decent, you could watch that too if you haven't seen it already, even though I wouldn't exactly call it a "must see" ;)

I love Chaplin too - according to some, it's not his best, but The Kid is my favorite.

I am not normal, so everything by Lynch (the must see factor depends on preferences in each movie :D from fuked Eraserhead, through Mulholland Drive to warming Straight Story ) - Kurosawa filmography - Rashomon being fav. Most others already mentioned, no need to repeat them

Mulholland Dr. (2001) - Puzzle-movie, shocked me closer to the end
Triangle (2009) - If you love time paradoxes
Coherence (2012) - If you love time paradoxes [2]
Inception (2010) - No comments, must-see (who the hell didn't watch it yet?)
Interstellar (2014) - Same as above

I'm not really into watching movies, these are came to my mind first..

Well, I guess there had to be one person that liked CHIPS. After all, no one else did. Even I hated it and I LOVED the original show. The movie was a blasphemy to it's memory. Hell, even Eric Estrada bashed the movie.

I highly recommend James Berardinelli's' Top 100 list, he is my favorite critic. He is not the stereotypical critic -- his list includes many "popcorn" movies, as you can see.

But I really disagree with his #1 spot. Oh, well, opinions. :D

My personal favs list is a bit outdated, but goes more or less like this:

  1. Dark City
  2. Inception
  3. Proof (1991) -- this one.
  4. The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring
  5. Interstellar
  6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King
  7. Princess Mononoke
  8. The City of Lost Children
  9. Blade Runner
  10. Léon: The Professional
  11. Aliens
  12. Schindler's List
  13. L.A. Confidential
  14. Titanic
  15. Contact

If you liked I Am Legend, which I'm admitting wasn't a bad movie, then you should watch The Last Man on Earth. The Vincent Price classic both based on the original book, I Am Legend.

I found it to be the superior movie.

Les triplettes de Belleville"
La vieille dame et les pigeons / Старая дама и голуби (1997) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0127710/ - забавная. только что посмотрел эту короткометражку

Here's a few more I remembered.
Burn After Reading Great movie by the Coen Brothers. Fun fact- the scenes at the gym were filmed in an old, out of business Tower Records store about 5 miles from my home.
The Ice Pirates Another in a line of obscure sci-fi comedies.
Le pacte des loups Great movie.
Sheena A fun little jungle girl movie featuring Tanya Roberts
The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension LOVE this movie. Always get the theme stuck in my head. Besides, where else are you going to see Jeff Goldblum in a red cowboy suit? Just don't ask what the watermelon was for.
Red Sonja Brigitte Nielsen's first movie and Arnold plays the sidekick for a change.
Toy Solders A highly underrated movie.

I've seen too many movies. I might list more later if anyone wants.
