Cause I do. The game is not even in beta yet but there is a giveaway for it? Why is the giveaway happening this early in it's development, before the game is even on steam? Don't get me wrong, the game looks fun and I might pre-order it eventually but to have a giveaway here on steamgifts that you won't be able to actually activate on steam for a while seems weird is all. Where will the line be drawn in the future? Will developers of games on steam greenlight be able to make a giveaway for their game and send the winners IOUs for when (or if) their game gets greenlit?

Because, marketing and promotion. They want to get the word out on preorders. And the developer is reputable.

And obviously this.

Yeah I figured that much, it just kinda seems strange is all that they don't actually have a game to giveaway yet.

They will. There have been several pre-order (and even beta-only) developer giveaways in the past.

Besides, this is just like any other pre-order. There's no set date yet but it will be on Steam. Chucklefish already have a published game on Steam (Wanderlust: Rebirth) and they will just release their game on Steam when it's done.

I think their game will be on steam anyways. So we just wait for the moment it will be released. Greenlight games aint sure that they gonna be on steam...they waiting for the light.

Cause CG allow it?

Not at all. A developer wants to build hype about his game that has a very high probability of being on Steam, and we like free Steam games.

So on the very low chance this game doesn't make it to Steam what then? Would you guys suspend CG for creating a fake giveaway?

There have been plenty of non-steam dev giveaways. This is the first one CG made iirc, though

Along with all the people that were allowed to create Battlefield 3 and Minecraft giveaways? Exceptions can be made.

This game is already guaranteed to go on Steam. Like, literally, the devs already know it will be available on steam when it comes out.

There have been dev giveaways of Greenlight games too, haven't there? I dont see what the problem is when its done officially.

I don't like free steam games.

Okay then, I'll ban your account to make sure you don't get any more.

The development team just did an AMA ( ask me anything) on reddit and were giving away pre order gift codes.
They added these here to give everyone a chance at a free copy.
A game like this that broke a quarter of a million dollars in preorders on the first
day on only their website is going to have no problem getting greenlit. To even question it seems like you are trolling.
If the people on the development team were all completely unheard of I could maybe understand the skepticism,
But there is no reason to believe that in this case.

If I dont win I will more then likely be buying this puppy off their website. Love Terraria and this game is shaping up to be just as awesome

In addition to Risto's statement, this is not only free advertisement, but they are still giving away 100 copies which 'technically' retail for as low as $11.25. It's very nice of them to do so and further encourages people to respect them for doing so. I'll likely be paying regardless ^^.

That has already happened, several times.

I dont see a problem ? Are you paying to enter the giveaway or something? Nope... They are advertising their game and i see nothing wrong with it. You will get in the beta and you will get your key when it's releaseed later this year.

Awesome of the devs to give away so many copies, and I can't be the only one with the homepage bookmarked, who had previously never heard of the game.

I haven't heard of the game previously either, this is great actually. They're probably just giving pre-order codes. Most likely I won't win one so now I'm hooked on getting it :)) have the pre-order page bookmarked.

Of course they are giving away pre-order codes. But those codes include the full game (including a Steam key when the game is released).
