I have Broken Sword 1 & 2 (which I haven't played yet) and have the opportunity to get the latest number 5 in a trade. Generally speaking I always like to play games in order but in this case I don't have 3 & 4 and won't be getting them unless they happen to get bundled.

For those who have played the earlier games, how important is it to have played the earlier ones in order to enjoy The Serpents Curse?

EDIT: I now have the game, and will play 1, 2 and then 5 :-) Thanks for all the feedback!

It's absolutely not important, broken sword can be played in any order you want. There is just a vague background but each episode is a different story.

The best one is the 2 and then the 1 and then the 3. 5 is the worst (but it's still better than many point'n'click because broken sword serie is the best !). Didn't play yet 4.

edit : ty for the notice, it was just grim legends 2 from tremor, didn't want to do a giveaway or a topic for it.

The ongoing story isn't a big part of any of them, could happily play them all as standalone titles. FWIW the Steam Collection Bundle will almost certainly get a heavy discount during the sale in a few weeks.

I have only played the first game, so I'm certainly not an expert for this question.
However I assume that these games work more like those detective novels. They don't really progress a story and it is more about solving murders and mysteries, than following a developing plot.
Despite that, I do believe that it would be a good choice to play the first game first, since it introduces the characters - and by looking at the preview-screenshots of Serpents Curse, that game definately has some references to the first game, that you wouldn't understand if you haven't played that one.

I only played 2 and 1 so far, in this order, I did realize there were references in 2 from 1, I also played a demo of 3 and saw a character that appeared in both 1 and 2, so I suppose you could get some backstory about some of the characters by playing in order, butr I did not feel as if the experience was ruined by playing it in a different order. 5 I just recently won it from here, so I am only missing 4, 4 is the latest title appeared on steam, and I did not hear good things about it.

Alright thanks for the input guys, I'll treat it as a standalone and do a trade for it :-)

They treated it more like a new third game. You can still play the 3rd and 4th ones, but those are really different (the fourth game is more like a box pushing puzzle than a point 'n' click…).

yeah I noticed that 3 & 4 had much less favorable reviews.

the 3 is still very decent, it's the 4 and 5 the worst

3 is not bad, but it is strange going from hand-drawn lush and detailed scenery to low-resolution blocky 3D graphics and choppy, ancient controls/animations. The story is actually quite solid, even if our protagonists have gone a little too far off in the adventurers-for-hire category, considering one was a simple lawyer, the other an urban reporter who never really left the city.
The 4th one feels like a "direct-to-video" sequel, where none of the original personnel had anything with the product, they just sold the name.

Serpents curse is just full of copypaste from first two games and has lots of fan-service. You won't understand it without playing first and second game. But don't bother about 3-4 parts, it's like expanded universe, pretty good games though(much bettter than awful BS 5).

I'd suggest playing in the order 1,2,5.

Yep that's what I am going to do. Somebody very generously gifted me the key for number 5. I'll skip 3&4 :-)

I've played all the Broken Sword games, they sometimes reference something from the earlier games, but for the most part they're pretty independant games.
