I have two Steam games which I can't currently run properly on my laptop.

  1. Tiny Echo - just installed for the first time
  2. Flat Heroes - played a few hours a month ago without any problems.
Symptoms for both of them are the same: game launched, I hear the sound and see an icon on the taskbar. However no window is showing. When I hover over the icon all I see is this. Clicking it doesn't change anything.

The only significant thing I can think of which changed since me playing Flat Heroes is a big Windows 10 update which I've installed just before Christmas. However googling common problems gamers have after this update didn't help me with my issue...

Other things which I've tried are:

  • reinstalling the games
  • updating Nvidia GPU drivers
  • reinstalling Microsoft Visual C++ libraries

One more thing to note is that Flat Heroes gives you an option for windowed/fullscreen when starting. Standard I use is fullscreen, but when I change it to windowed weird thing start happening. Window shows up, there's "Made with Unity screen" which quickly disappears. Then the Steam overlay notification pops up, the game music starts, but the intro sequence doesn't show up (there's just gray background). After a second Steam overlay notification starts a cascade animation of going down. That's it :O

If any of you ever had similar issues, or you can think of any other advice let me know :)

EDIT: The problem is fixed!

Turns out that the Windows 10 update changed some things in Nvidia panel, which caused Unity games to not work. Check out this thread (linked to me by Sooth) for a solution :D

Hmmm that's very strange. Did you try running the game exe file instead of starting it from steam? (not that it makes a difference, but still)? Also try running the game as administrator and compatibility mode (Windows 7/8). Maybe even experiment a little with the other settings in the compatibility tab? Nothing else comes to my mind, sorry. If nothing works at least I bumped the thread so more people can view it and help. :)

Neither running the game as administrator nor changing the compatibility mode helped, but thanks for the bump! :)

Problems with lunching

:checks the clock:
Hmm, it's abouts noontime for the US. I'm hungry. Anyone else hungry? I feel like someone else is hungry, also.
I could really go for lunch. Of course, if someone didn't live in a western timezone- say, if they lived in East Europe- then I suppose they'd have problems with lunching right about now. I shall now endeavor to thoroughly enjoy my lunch, on behalf of those who are unable to do such at this time.

Fixed! I live in central Europe, I'm not a native speaker and it's not the first time I got those to confused ;)

I live in central Europe

Sorry if I misassociated that- Steam lists you as being in Poland, and I was under the impression that the country classifies as being part of East Europe, hence my choice of phrasing. Of course, given the minor time-zone difference, the gag still works after the change. :)

And no, wasn't meaning to poke at your typo: I just find wordplay of that sort enjoyable, especially given that I was able to link to a topical thread also related to your listed region.

Oh, about your problem: Windows 10 has had a habit of uninstalling Nvidia drivers, but doing so in such a way that it doesn't properly register as being uninstalled. As such, you should first uninstall your Nvidia drivers, and then reinstall them, as that seems to (and at least did, in my case, on a previous occasion) fix that issue [if that's what has happened, here].

Given that one game worked to begin with, unless a piece of hardware is failing, drivers and are the most likely issue by far. Especially as I believe Win10 compatibility issues have been resolved in previous updates (as I haven't personally encountered any in about a year now, despite having them frequently early on).

On the other hand, I see a lot of discussions in November mentioning that one Windows update did mess with Unity (which you indicated is involved), so you could check those threads for tips, to see if your issue can be solved the same way.

  1. I uninstalled and later installed Nvidia drivers. Didn't help.
  2. The thread you linked describes exactly the same issue and the solution listed there worked for me. Thank you for finding it <3
