I keep receiving over the last 6 months invitations every 2 or 3 days from scam bots, mostly 0 lvl. This began from the moment i became an officer on a giveaway group.

I am getting tired of reporting the bot accounts and blocking them. As many mention in their profiles, it is a very common and unpleasant problem.

What i want to know is how to get rid of it! I don't wish to make my profile private, i don't wish to remove myself from the hundreds of groups i am part of. Is there anything i could do? What have you done to stop it? I tried changing my name but it didn't help, probably the bot use the Steam ID

I'm stacking bot request because I'll write a bot that auto-blocks other bots, I'll need them to test my "counter-bot bot" :3

steam should have a system where you can disable friend invites. Those legit ppl who want to add can write on your profile for you to review

They can't :D

Friends only

oh you can set comment permission to everyone and disable friend invite button. Then it would work

Far more often bots post phishing links instead of send friend requests. It got so bad that I had to set my comments to "friends only". So leaving your comments section open is a problem in itself.

Don't worry, it can be far worse. I get 10+ a day. The phishing links posted on my profile have gotten so bad that I've had to set the comments to "friends only".

As ridiculous as this sounds, Valve need to implement a security captcha for sending friend requests.

Exactly the same thing!
Just need the option "minimum level for a friendly request".

CAPTCHAs don't work, bots have been bypassing them for a long time now. Just google CAPTCHA broken

just an option to dens friend request at level 5 or more, or sth like that
or not being able to see request from low profile users - its just so simple and they are not doing this

Check your trade topics and see if you can close a few of them. I only get bot invites when I start a thread on Steamtrades and other trading sites.

You know, i had forgotten 3 open threads on steamtrades and it seems that the oldest was created the period the invitations started.

I just closed them. hope you are right

There currently isn't a way unless you leave steam for good.

There are some things you can do, but they are only minor.

Don't post on any trade sites. Not in the steam discussion area and none of these 3rd party sites.
Don't bump any trade threads you have started.
Don't post on any discussion area on steam.

But as we know all those are pretty much not going to happen for most people.

Here is a thread with links to a few other threads with good suggestions on how Valve could handle the bot issue while giving the users the options of who they want contacting them.
http://steamcommunity.com/discussions/forum/10/620703493324774739/

The suggestions are not perfect, nothing ever will be.

lol ya its not perfect, but better then nothing. I get 3 or 4 invites a week usually, though some days I have had 6 in just one day

You can't without stopping using Steam, or maybe just delete all your friends from your list.

I got like 10 during the last hour. If they are level 0-1 and they have private profiles I block them instantly.

I just recently put a rather expensive item on the community market and BAM. 10 friend requests per minute from level 0-1 "users". I now have a huge list of blocked users. When the item was sold it stopped. Now I get the odd 1-2 requests per day like I used to.

I accept every bot invite. When they do something, I report them, block them, and delete them.

They are annoying, but until Valve implement a better way to filter friend invites, it'll have to do.

You can see the profile level before acepting. Just click on block, nobody with level 0 (a Steam new user) will know you magically.

My invite list right now for just 1 day....
I really wish Steam would take action against this.

Here's how I do it.

  • It seems that Steam no longer has an "Accept Friend Invitations" toggle. Friend requests require acceptance.
  • Post the requirement for acceptance to my friends list on the first line of my profile.
  • Ignore every unknown invite that doesn't fulfill the stated requirement.

Result: I get almost no messages from bots (unless someone is infected), and very few instances of unwanted begging.

well cant do much about them i guess, but the more trade threads you have running the more invites you probably get :)

Valve don't care. A private profile doesn't work. I get several a day.

It's a simple fucking fix, but Valve don't give an airborne sard....

They need to implement a requirement of either a minimum number of games or, better still, a minimum $ account to be spent via a linked payment method, before an account is able to add friends without a captcha.

In the meantime, suggest an EMP strike...
