Should I expect greater discounts for games during the Summer/Winter sales or during regular sales ?

Oxenfree is 75% off currently, and I wanted to wait for the Winter Sale to buy it, but it seems it was only 50% off last summer sale.

Is it always the case that winter sales are worse than regular sales ? Is there some general rule on whether I should wait for the winter sale or not ?

Thanks

I do think summer sale is the best.

summer and winter are the best, except sometimes regular sales have price glitches and weekly sales sometimes give high discount on A-AAA games

i get the feeling that such a steep discount on Oxenfree might indicate that it might soon be (Humble) bundled
i take no responsibility if this gut feeling turns out incorrect

I've bought Humble Monthly for three months on a whim (September-November) and that's one of my fears: buying a game on steam to find out a few days later that I received it on the Humble Monthly. It's different for other bundles, because I can decide not to buy it if I already have the games, but no such possibility with monthly
I'll wait for 10 hours just in case :)

if it was to get bundled, probably wouldn't be this one
they already got their primo game in Grim Dawn

The answer is no: I play only a few games per month, and I am currently playing KotoR, Spec Ops, and plan to play the Bioshock trilogy afterwarsds, I have plenty to look for before december :)

Then I'd say just wait. If you know you won't play it until then, you might as well get it then instead (although there is always a chance it won't get as cheap).

Spec Ops is awesome :)

Sales have been getting worse for a few years. If the difference between 75% off and (say) 90% off is only a dollar or two I wouldn't wait.

There is no difference for some time. The sale prices are always the same. If you really want to get a game cheap, then Steam is only good if you are in the cheap locked regions. If you are ROW, it stopped being the cheapest store a good while ago.

I agree (and I'm ROW), but I usually sell my trading cards so I have some money in my steam wallet that I could use for this

True. I'm the other way around though, the majority of my Steam purchases are now aimed at finishing up my remaining badges.

After the introduction of steam refunds and the removal of flash sales, the winter and summer sales are about an increase chance of higher discounts instead of a guarantee or expectation.

The lower sale for Oxenfree during the summer sale has nothing to do with it being the summer sale, it was because the game was newer. Usually the big sales will give you discounts that are in line with what you would expect on a regular sale for a game of that age.

There's no solid rule, lack of daily/flash deals makes publisher not want to give big discounts, as they'll have to be same for 2 weeks plus there's bunch of pc players going completely dumb during Summer/Winter sales so they actually give worse sales than during Midweek/Weekend deals, because they think "morons will buy it anyway".

I actually went over the numbers in an older thread in regards to frequency and size of discounts during the summer sale. I specifically looked at the sales that got front-page coverage for the simple reason that otherwise you would get all these games that nobody except card farmers care about skewing the numbers. Even when disregarding the games that are on 90%+ discounts for the sake of card farmers, and just looking at the bigger titles, discounts have gone up. They feel smaller, but that's because flash sales were engineered in such a way that it would encourage impulse buying and a feeling of getting a better deal than we actually got.

^ This.
The longer you can wait, the cheaper it will get.

And burgers are good. :X

with goat cheese and maybe smoked duck (or bacon...)
or with Blue cheese (the smelly kind) with onions.

The only big difference between seasonal sales and regular sales, is that during seasonal sales there's a wider range of games on sale.
The amount of discount a game gets depends entirely on its release date: newer games are unlikely to be heavily discounted.
Also, during Summer and Winter sales, there're holiday card sets, with the relevant cards dropping in place of coupons when crafting badges.

Personally, I waited for this year's summer sales just to see most of the wishlisted games to get the same price drop as in the past.
So, from now on, 75% or more is always a good discount, depending on how much I may want a game.
