But you know that F3 and NV are just re-skinned/re-modeled Skyrim?
For story and atmosphere it's advised to play first games of series. F3 lost its soul even if it is still a good game.

You know that Skyrim came out in 2011 while Fallout 3 and NV came out in 2008 and 2010?

Also calling them a "reskin"... they might have a similar gameplay and all, but using guns in an apocalyptic wasteland is quite different from using magic and swords in a medieval fantasy world.

I'm not such a hypocrite that would call some games without previously playing them, so yeah. I played them all. With Skyrim its 6 games.

I liked the setting of New Vegas better. Plus its got more gameplay mechanics than vanilla 3.

EDIT For your first Fallout definitely get 3.

Just wondering is GOTY necessary or Fallout 3 vanilla is good enough ?

GOTY, it adds a lot.

Vanilla is cool, but at least 3 of 5 DLCs are really worth the price. Operation Anchorage is entertaining, but linear (but the loot is awesome). The Pitt has a nice story, some cool weapons, and Pittsburg looks awesome. And Broken Steel is like the epilogue of the game, and having it installed will let you play the game after you beat it.

If you want to play both, play Fallout 3 first.

You wouldn't like 3 so much if you started with New Vegas since NV came feature-wise as upgraded F3.

Fallout 3 - better story, feeling;
Fallout NV - minor gameplay improvements over 3.

I played both and I enjoyed FNV more than FO3. The main story in FO3 isnt that good imo. But in the end I think it comes down to the setting.

Both suck but New Vegas is a bit better imo

Fallout 3 > Fallout NV
The only thing that they added in NV was more choices in the storylines and a worst land to explore.

They also added more weapons and what not.

Fallout 3 and Fallout 3 GOTY won't work on Win7-8 without a bunch of modifications to the files so i'd say go for New Vegas.

Works on win 7 without any problem, at least on mine version (and quite a lot of others', based on discussions)
With the added refund system at least it's not a big problem.
(OP, if you read this: beware, as FO3 has a launcher and it counts as having the game running - if you ever need a refund.)

i had some problems with fallout 3 on win 7, but the unofficial patch/mod let me play it. however, new vegas is better anyway.

Totally worth it. Plus if you have both, you can play Tale of Two Wastelands, which combines FO3 and F:NV into one game. :)

Ok, I didn't have any problems after I turned off Windows Live, but that's kind of assumed, right? (When I installed, it was on a brand-new computer, so.) But yes, other than that, no problems.

Oh, absolutely. I can recommend a bunch of awesome quest mods if you're interested, too. The world of mods is vast and wonderful (and sometimes a little scary).

(I have Fallout 3 and all of its DLC, along with New Vegas, with only the DLC that has the canteen in it, on 360 already but Ive been interested in the PC version just for the mods)
Sounds great!

already played fallout 3 and new vegas in w7, w8 and 8.1 and never had a problem, with f3 the only thing you need to do (at least for me) is to download the updated installer for games for windows live from the xbox page

Fallout 3 if you want a good post-apocalyptic shooter. Fallout New Vegas if you want a real Fallout experience, this title is much more close to the original games' setting, style and world. FO3 looks great, but it's just a shooter with RPG elements, while New Vegas have much-much more like a real RPG with a more developed crafting, weapons and factions system.

This. FO3 if you want more sophisticated shooter, FNV if you want RPG game.

Fallout 3 has a more interesting world, more interesting things to explore, etc. Fallout NV has a better story. What do you want?

Permalink

New Vegas all the way. Considerably better writing, more interesting quests, less linear design, an ending that is not head-smackingly stupid.

But I would actually really recommend starting with the first two. Controls are a bit clunky, but the games hold up quite well.

Both are set in a Fallout Universe, both are open world sandbox, both have similar game play though some differences..People will tell you one of 3 things. Fallout 3 is better than Fallout NV, Fallout NV is better than Fallout 3, or both are good to play. People will also tell you FO 3 GOTY crashes more than FO NV , or that FO NV crashes more than FO 3 GOTY.These people probably did not add in any of the tweaks and "unofficial patches" properly or at all for either game which fixes the majority of the crashes.

Fallout 3 and Fallout NV both have community guides/threads on steam for getting the game patched without going deep into mods.

My final Verdict?

Get the fallout that from pictures and videos has the environment that appeals to you more. The Environment is what will make the biggest difference to anyone who plays either one and is one of the biggest topics of dicussion. Fallout 3 is in a metro wasteland with more urban environments. Fallout NV is like being in Texas in terms of being more spaced out.

Both games have their strengths and weaknesses, but at the end they are Fallout games set in different "atmosphere themes"
I got both games because I like the settings of both.

I've only played Fallout 3 on Xbox, I would recommend to you the one which vanilla or moded version are the most colourful, Fallout 3 was quite depressing for me to play for long hours (washed browns and greys everywhere).

PS: blasting some mutant and scavengers heads cheered me up at least

PPS: Either way buy the COMPLETE Editions, separate DLC are a steal
