Okay well I have been trying almost everything for about a week now. I've researched this to the point where I can't figure out the problem and I have decided to post a topic on it, and maybe it will help other people with this problem.

Here's what the problem is: I get random occurring lag and slight freezing in-game. When this freezing and lag happens it only happens to me and I can hear this strange stuttering/glitchy sound in my headphones, it's almost like a crackling buzz sound. I have looked it up and it seems to be a problem with either heating issues (I haven't dusted or done anything about this yet) Graphics card (It was working with games perfectly a couple months ago and all my games) or something entirely different.

I've tried a lot of things, such as going into my processes and taking unneeded things off, defragging my drivers, updating my drivers, lowering the quality of all of the games, doing virus and malware scans, taking away unnecessary files with CCleaner, and so many other things that just don't seem to work.

The weird thing is that it only gets like this in fast-paced games where a lot of things are going on at once, such as Counter Strike or any other shooting game, and I also get freezing spurts in Torchlight once in awhile during boss fights and high enemy counts. Also, I can run GMOD perfectly fine but I do get freezes/lags once in awhile but it's rare.

TLDR - Freezing/lag issues that cause my speakers to emit this strange crackling noise.

Thanks.

What are all of the games that are causing the issues? Have you updated your sound drivers?

Try playing the games that have this issue with sound disabled (not just muted on your end, but actually disabled), and see if the issues still occur.

What are your specs as well?

I'll try that, and all of my specs meet the minimum requirements for my games. I know specs are needed to try and solve the program, but I have showed them to people and they said those weren't really the issue. I'm looking for more driver updates now, maybe I missed something or it didn't update correctly.

Yeah sounds like a audio driver/card problem, in the old days these were known to cause all sorts of problems similar to that and still do on the rare occasion now, if you have access to a pci sound card (and your using integrated sound) you might want to try switching it out to see if it works, honestly if counter strike causes it I highly doubt its overheating problems. could also be harddrive load issues (try a smart test) but I doubt that.

Also if the games let you limit the number of sounds try lowering that, unfortunately most modern games don't.

Thank you, and I found the newest update for my graphics card that I didn't find before so hopefully it works. I'm also going to try playing with no sound and see what happens. If it frees up the lag issues do I update my soundcard?

You should update whether or not the lag issues get fixed. Keeping your drivers updated is a good habit.

Well I updated my graphics card, not as bad but I still get the lag/freezing and noises.

I would definitely open the case and remove any dust in there, in addition to updating your drivers. Even if your graphics card was working a few months ago, if it's clogged with dust and overheating... you could melt it.

I don't know how to do that without causing more problems, and I have a laptop.

Search for your specific brand and model, see if you can find a how-to page. Or take it in to someone who knows what they're doing; $25 to get it cleaned out would be cheaper than replacing the laptop. You might also want to try a cooling pad or a cooling fan/stand.

I'll probably try that cooling method, those look useful. I'm waiting for my new graphics driver to install, and if that doesn't work then I will continue to look for how-to's and take it apart. I can't really take it in to be cleaned because even 25$ is expensive for me. Thanks a lot for getting those links.

a relatively easy solution while not the best would be to blast some compressed air into your vents when its turned off...

not elegant but it gets the job done for a while

If you use compressed air from a bike pump or something make sure you leave your laptop off for a while if your in a humid climate it may cause condensation. your other option is to spring 5 dollars for canned air that wont cause condensation but that's pretty much a waste.

Clean the internals of your computer. Dust.

  1. Whats your hardware?

  2. Whats your idle/load temperature?

So I went into my sound drivers to find out what update I needed and it turns out I have 4 of the same type of High Definition Audio driver? Is this a problem, or why do I have so many?

I was thinking it could be your hard drive that is failing... couse hard drive does interfere with sounds sometimes... and that could couse lagging and other problems too.

That comman problem with most cheap laptop becuase they have Poor Graphics Device and Poor Audio Device and Slow Harddrive.
The crackling buzz sound maybe a bus mastering problem have try update your audio driver?.
What is your system spec all that helps we need make and model gose a long in help solve the problem.
You know that what Steam Users's Forums is for it called "Hardware and Operating Systems".

It's not that cheap. Also how many sound drivers should I have in device manager because it says I have 4 + realtek and that seems like several.

So, I realize this may be an odd answer and it's probably not right. But with Source games, such as TF2 when I overclock my video card too far maybe every 10 seconds my game stops for 10 seconds and repeats the same sound and it loops very annoyingly. That's what happens instead of artifacts with Source engine. Also, it would help if you gave us the specifics of your system.

Oh I know, but I think it's more of a dust option, so I'll somehow take apart my laptop and blow anything off if there's anything covering what's inside.

I HAVE SAME PROBLEM!! I think its something with CPU. Try run a CPU test if your PC will lag or will freeze during the test its definitely a cpu problem...or maybe a power source problem..If you want quick help for some games like Portal 2, L4D 2...etc. disable Multicore rendering in game menu. Problem is that not many games have this option (I love Valve because they have it in every game) I have this problem for 2 years and still I dont know how to fix it permanently...maybe new CPU or power source... :-/

Thanks very much, I'll try doing a CPU test. Good to know I'm not the only one having issues with this.

Go to "Playback Devices" (Controp Panel -> Sound), Select "Speakers", click "Properties", and in the advanced tab change the default format to 16 bit, 48000 Hz and disable exclusive mode. Now click OK and do the same with your default recording device (should be the microphone). It's very important that playback and recording quality are the same. After ensuring that this worked you can raise the quality (always with the same value in both devices) to see how much you can attain without choking your system. Good luck.
