I used to very much be in the "always say thanks" faction, but with the message notification system, I'm aware that some people who used to complain about thanks-spam now have a legitimate gripe, so I definitely say thanks less often than I used to.

Note the poll is focused on saying thanks upon entry. This has nothing to do with thanks upon winning ... honestly, if you do not say thanks upon winning, you're a douche. No offense but this isn't even debatable, so it is not covered in this poll.

Has your THANK YOU entry behavior changed with the message notification system?

View Results
No, I still say THANKS with pretty much every entry.
No, I still almost never post THANKS.
Yes, I now post a THANKS more often because I know the creator will see it.
Yes, I no longer post THANKS with frequency because it causes notification clutter.

Public: Usually not, unless the creator's description seems to want a response. If it is someone I know, I will definitely comment.
Invite Only: If I can think of something clever to say, I will comment. Otherwise, same as above. Thread bump guaranteed, it's the least I can do. If a train, comment a few times to prevent annoyance.
Group: Depends on how tightly knit I am with the group. If I open the giveaway, I will most likely comment, even if I don't enter.
Whitelist: Try to comment on every one, even if I don't enter.

Behavior hasn't changed that much, maybe less generic thank yous for giveaways so that people have something more interesting to read.

I was going to post the same thing, so I will just write " +1 ". thought if I enter public GA and I see that noone so far commented I leave a comment.

And in the past I liked to leave my thanks under every car in the train, now I focus on 1 - 2 "thanks" under GAs and one additional thanks at the end, before bumping the thread :D - that's direct resulf of spam-notifications thing.

I don't think it ever really changed, to be honest. Though I have noticed that I say "thank you" in any form almost every time I enter a whitelist giveaway, sometimes when I enter invite only giveaways (depending on how I got there) and rarely when I enter public giveaways because I feel like the giveaway creator gets spammed by enough "thanks" messages already.

Cool. Tumalu ninja'd me once again. Damn you. DAMN YOU!

Technically my comments are all invalid. I usually make a short comment, then I usually edit it a billion times.

Hmmm, never a "thanks" was so contraditory how it is now. I've seen a lot of people posting on forum "Dont say thanks, it's just spam in my mail box, im going blacklist you..." and "Oh, i'm giving you a free game, and you dont say at least a thank you, so im going to blacklist you" too.

Result: Sometimes i say thanks, sometimes i dont say a word, sometimes i just sit and think.

Public: nothing on description means nothing should be said. If said, mostly not just "thanks". Manners reasons.
Private/Groups/Whitelist: I usually comment something related just because I want to know how much I like that Gifter/Group/Etc.
Win: Obligatory (in GA or chat).

  1. is that because you feel "thanks" is not a heartfelt message or because its just not good enough anymore?
  2. is "thank you" what youre trying to say but come up with another way to say it because "thank you" is not good enough?

just wondering what you think on the matter

At least for me, just saying "thanks" isn't giving enough effort for the giveaways I'm entering.

For public or giveaways without much description, I rarely say anything. If it is someone I know, I try to say thanks in a unique way if possible. Best bet would be trying to learn who likes what when it comes to whitelist/group giveaways since those are the peeps you interact with the most.

This shit is just hard tbh XD.

P.S. Keohookalani told me you cheaped out and used a goat instead of a lamb. Do the ritual over or else!

I don't care what people post on my GAs. The notifications and whatnot don't bother me in the least. But I do realize they can bother other people, so I usually limit my comments on a GA to a sincere thank you if I win the game. I'm sure I got blacklisted plenty for saying thank you all the time when I first started using the site, but childhood conditioning to show appreciation was hard to break. :P

I stopped saying thanks for another reason.

I always said thank you in one or another way, because i grew up with manners and if someone is making you a gift, you tell them you are thankful for what he does. If those people do not want to receive a thanks, they can always gift away the serials in this forum.

But then, one day, i was blacklisted from 2 people, because i only said "Thank you kindly for giving me the chance to win here".
They complained that i did copy this message on both of their giveaways, which is the standard message is use for giveaways that do not write any more information or text.
Note: if the person who created the giveaway writes a text, i will always read it and refer to it in my response. If the creator asks for anything, i will always try my best to help or do what he wished for.
I am here quite a while now and have seen many discussions about wether or not you should say thank you.
And i think this is ridiculous in a time where most people on the internet do not have manners.

But this one day just tipped the scales. I swear that when people put me on their blacklist just for thanking them for their giveaway, i am done with it.
From this day on i never wrote anything on another giveaway, for i must fear another blacklist or maybe some idiot reporting me to the SG Support.

It is sad what happened to this site and this community, but that is how it is and i have to live with it.
But still, if someone takes the time to write something in his giveaway and asks for new music or something, i will do my best to help, but if no such thing is done, you will get no thank you from me anymore.

It has not changed for me. I still keep spamming every giveaway I enter with a message. If creator asks for no comments, I do not enter. Life is jolly.

Notification system hasn't directly, but behavior of giveaways creators did. Blacklisting for common courtesy did drop my appropriation posts quite significantly, but I do understand why creators are bothered by those. I do read every header in giveaways I enter, and try to respond on creators request if I'm able to do it right. Expressing creativity with words is not my strong suit, actually it's probably one of worst fields, I'm borderline abysmal. But sometimes, I just don't have time to for-fill requests.

I used to say thanks in every giveaway I entered. Now I start off with a few different thanks messages and then ask the gifter if he minds. If they say they do, I try to stop posting in every giveaway of theirs.

I don't always post thank you comment upon entering a giveaway because I don't want to see any more forum threads about excessive blacklisting n' shit :)

I post thanks only mostly in my steam friends giveaways :)

If it was me you are talking about, it was due to ratio. I blacklist peeps with ratios less than 0.8 (8 gibs per 10 wins) as I check the winners. Message me when it's fixed and I'll remove you.

If you weren't talking about me, disregard this message :D.

I will say thanks here then. Not worrying about blacklist much, I just don't want to be ungrateful. And about my ratio, eh, will fix it someday :P I had too much luck this month.
