Which one is the most overrated bands of all time.

View Results
Radiohead
Pink Floyd
U2
Nirvana
Led Zeppelin
Rolling Stones

Cant say I agree with any of the bands you posted.
But everyone its own I guess.

Radiohead. Seen them live in a small club in 1995 (the Bends tour). A present for my girlfriend (now wife) back then. Saw them later on a festival. They are a solid band imo. And Paranoid Android for me is one of the best ever rock songs.

Pink Floyd plays a genre you just like or dislike. I listened to them a lot when I was a stoner. Still some of their songs give me the chills (Shine on you crazy diamond for instance).

U2. I dont like Bono. But again a great live band and I'm happy I have seem them live (Nou Camp Barcelona 2005). Wont probably pay for another concert but it was an awesome experience nevertheless. They made some great albums imo, but some of them I dislike very much.

Nirvana. When I was young Nirvana and Pearl Jam released their most succesful albums (Nevermind and Ten). I was very much into the alternative scene, listening to metal and rock. Nirvana sure made an impact on me. They paved the way for many rock bands.

Led Zeppelin. Not a fan but Stairway to Heaven is an anthem.

Rolling Stones. Cant even imagine why you put them on the list. By far the most influential band ever (together with Elvis and The Beatles).
I'm not a fan but do recognise the impact they made. And they are still alive, how awesome is that?

Now shit I TRUELLY dislike and which I think should be on the list instead:

Coldplay. I mean, seriously. Saw them twice (sadly) in a year and they did the same jokes and routines both concerts. Thats sad. Overrated to the max. They are so very popular and only made a few decent songs imo. (yes this gonna make me blacklisted by some I know ;) )
Nickelback. Fake and shitty songs.
UB40. Just a coverband. Takes a song and pours some reggae sauce over it.
Simply Red. Simply pisses me off

I don't think Nickleback was ever really considered good or popular outside what the media wanted people to believe.

Coldplay, thank you. Such boring music. Every song is exactly the same as the one before and they are all about absolutely nothing.

I have the same problem with Radiohead that I have with Coldplay and probably also Robbie Williams and Madonna. They reinvent themselves and evolve, or so they say. "Yeah, I have really grown as an artist"
...
No you have not. You have changed the essence of what made you who you are and are slowly turning into cr*p. Claiming your new stuff is as good or better as your old stuff while clearly it's a devolution. It's very sad.

I would hate to be in Radiohead and slowly going from rock star to...tranquilized monkey on a synthesizer...

the first two albums are good. after that it just got worse and worse, until they started producing pop music with e-guitars. ^^

i am so glad Mustaine was kicked out. Megadeth is one of my favorite bands, and so much better in every way.

Another Mega-Heretic. At least if you were saying "the first four albums" it would make more sense. On a serious note, these conversations are pointless at its best (and dangerous at its worst, on sports) because there is nothing to "prove" for our personal taste. It's called personal taste because it's not something objective. So every opinion should be respectable. On a personal note, overall I like Megadeth more. But I don't take sides like most fans are doing, just enjoying the music and keeping the positive sides ;)

how would it make sense to lie about my opinion? ;)

It's called personal taste because it's not something objective.

sure, i didn't claim otherwise. all we do is state our personal opinion here.

But I don't take sides like most fans are doing, just enjoying the music and keeping the positive sides

i don't "take sides", i say what i think is good music, and what i think is bad music. and what i think is a very overrated band (since that was the question here). and what i said about Mustaine is just true. i am happy he was kicked. because this drama created one of my all-time favorite bands. didn't intend to say anything else with that. :)

The first two sentences are humorous-intended, that's why I continued with "on a serious note", to clarify that it's all about personal taste ;)

For me, there are two different things to say "I don't like this" and "I think it's overrated". I use to say this for various forms of art, sometimes I don't like something but I acknowledge its important influence. So to speak of Master of Puppets, do you really thing it's overrated?

Of course you're not going to ...lie about your opinion, haha. There's no question about it. Even when we're going against the whole world we should be free to express it!

for me "overrated" means people think the music is better than it is in my opinion. it's not just a matter of influence. also, "important" influence has such a positive touch, while i think Metallica's influence was very negative over all.

So to speak of Master of Puppets, do you really thing it's overrated?

yes, absolutely! i just don't think it's very good music. mediocre at best (my favorite would probably be Orion). Kill 'em All and Ride the Lightning were significantly better. Metal has so much more to offer than Metallica. i think i made clear what i think about their newer releases above. but even the older ones - they're not that special, if you ask me. it's still a mystery why they were so successful. the early 80s had a ton of really good bands. better bands. but somehow Metallica managed to become the biggest one. and i just don't think their compositional talent justifies their success in any way.

Well, Metallica is an overrated band in general, there's no question about it. But I think that Master of Puppets is one of the very best metal albums ever and I am saying this while listening to every sub-genre and definitely an enormous amount of non "famous" bands. Just to clarify that I would still say the same even if Metallica didn't have this "brand awareness" and huge recognition (which makes them overrated).

And of course I agree with your statement.

Metal has so much more to offer than Metallica.

Megadeth is better, but tbh Metallica is pretty cool except for that St Anger album, which is a shit because they tried out nu metal with it, while Megadeth tried out some softer kind of radio friendly stuff with their Risk, and did better at it.... anyway, before and after St Anger it's all good.

Permalink

Risk may be better than St. Anger, but it's still pretty shitty. and i find the reasoning behind that album - as much as i love Megadeth - very questionable.

Yeah, that's the only Megadeth album I didn't enjoy. All their other stuff is pretty good, but they did change a lot. I heard their new album is in the style of their earlier albums, so I really hope so, since those were the best (Peace Sells, Countdown etc)

More like, before St. Anger. While the black album was rather meh itself, Load was actually great, perhaps even the best Metallica album when it comes to overall music quality (I honestly don't understand how it's possible not to like something as monumental as Bleeding Me, for example), or at least on par with AJFA. And Reload was okayish as well.

Load and Reload were okay, but not even close to their earlier work. And it all depends on opinion. I don't like Bleeding Me myself, but I can see why some people like it.

Why is not Metallica on the list ; First'f All : Kill'em All, second Master of Puppets,...and Justice for all third, and last the black album. That four albums kept my mouth shut.

And there lies the problem. You listed only bands that you dislike, regardless if they have good or bad in objective manner.
Same goes for us, who think Metallica is overrated. I personally never liked them, but acknowledge that they have following and for people who like that type of music they have good albums. But even those people sure are aware if their favorite band is over praised or not.
As Mallorn nicely pointed out, all bands have brought something to the table, and generally are considered good/quality bands, its just that we as "consumers" give them more or less credit they deserve.

As for me Beatles and Elvis are probably 2 most overrated performers, but there is no way that I'll deny what they did for rock and future metal, and music in general. But I still don't listen to them in my spare time.

  1. I can't edit poll. If so show me the way because i want to include metallica and others
  2. Elvis ok. very much but he is rather a personality and that is something else. At least that bands has some honesty about them.
  3. As i have said before i don't have a dislike for them (except Radiohead)

I'd also say INXS, but thankfully there is a chance that many people here either never heard about them or I just managed to bring back some really painful memories.

Oh, if you lived in the nineties, you wouldn't say that. To go back to my actual list, if Cobain wouldn't have snorted himself to death, Nirvana would probably be in the same category nowadays, only with the added bonus of having at least one memorable album. Only INXS died due to natural reasons (people realising that they were very overrated).

Permalink

I think so as well. Nirvana probably wouldn't have survived. They have some good songs, but most of their stuff is really not that good. It still gets attention, just because Cobain left (well, I think).

Hansons. Yes, they're still around (or were recently), and yes they were highly rated once upon a time. (And despite disliking music I can say that they've improved a lot, so it was just their actually popular bits that were overrated).

That's the only song people remember these days. I can understand why it got popular, but in retrospect, it's more of a novelty song. And there are worse ear worms out there.

Oh, and did you know that this thing used to be popular?

He was really only popular in the second half of the 80's and early 90's (why he lasted so long to begin with, I don't know, but he kept on appearing together with other hands well into the 00's (and not small ones either)).

Now if you want something that thankfully was only a flash in the pan, we have El Chombo, who don't seem to have influenced anything, but did reach a relatively high position in the charts back in the mid 00's

None of them from the list.

My vote would go to Green Day (if I were to pick a band from the "popular" bands list), but there is even more overrated bands, but they haven't been around enough to be even given the chance (to be worthy) to be in this kind of list.

I think it's a heresy to include bands as Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin on the poll.

Comment has been collapsed.

Not really. Some people actually think Led Zepps are overrated, and there are reasons: specific "classic" style, 90% of tracks are covers and interpretations, -we-dont-give-a-fk- behaviour etc.

As for Pink Floyds, well some people just hate Pink Floyds thats it xD

I can understand what you mean and sure all opinions are respectable. But seriously, on a poll with only 6(!) of the most overrated bands of all(!!!) time, does really Led Zeppelin deserve to be there?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Its not my poll, idk honestly, but i think its about the scales. If the band is BIG, than even slightly overrating (like in LZ case imo) becomes BIG. If the band is medium-impact (say, Daft Punk) than any overrating on it will be not comparable, etc.
But idk this poll is huge bu***sht and is for fun only, no serious business here anyway :D

I don't really get how the oldschool bands can be overrated ??? they are becoming sorta classic and there is almost no hype around them. people listen to them because they actually like their music, not because it is hyped everywhere (cuz it is not).
you know what is actually overrated ? trash pop-music which no one can remember in 20 years... wait, no - in 20 months :D
