Hey everyone, it's no surprise the single ad at the bottom of the homepage isn't performing well. I'm going to test an ad unit in the sidebar on the homepage, and on giveaway pages to see how it performs in comparison. Right now I just dropped in an AdSense unit, so the ads might seem a little irrelevant (there's snow outside my window, and I just noticed an advertisement for air-conditioning). I'll likely be trying a few different things in that space this week, including gaming advertisements, and custom ad units that better blend with the design.

They might stay, they might not stay, I just want to collect some data so I can make a better decision. If you have any suggestions, feel free to post.

Ya, it should be under the filters

I'd like to +1 this. It would feel less intrusive under the links instead of above.

Other sites use it to mixed success. It's all about how the money is handled.

Some ideas:

  • Donors might enjoy no ads for some period of time.
  • Donations close when the monthly (bimonthly, quarterly, etc.) target is hit, reopening at the start of each cycle.
  • Once donations are met, ads are disabled globally.
  • If donations are not closed, the extra money can go into a site giveaway fund pool.

I dislike the new ad placement. Along with the love for the site, the reason I didn't use adblock on SG is that the ads never felt intrusive. It's not only that the new ad is in a more visible place; It also forces some elements to shrink/increase in size, making them look ugly and uncomfortable, and with the ads' mostly bright colors(I've just saw a moving ad,too) they're a considerable annoyance. I feel they take way too much of the site's focus.

While i'm a sad to do this,I'm going to block sg ads for a while, checking for changes from time to time and see if there are any (I'll try and follow this thread, too); That's what I would've done in case this was a permanent change.

I agree, it looks really ugly now

Having it between the search box and the browse options is a bit annoying, breaks the flow of viewing for me.
Of course you want the ads to be visible (kind of the point) but location may benefit from some tweaking

I agree with the larger size making things inconsistent since the ads are not on every page, the sidebar should remain the same size it was prior to the ads. As for the brightness that shouldn't be judged with these "temporary ads" , but if in the end they are the same then users can always adjust brightness/saturation etc with CSS filters which is a better option than blocking.

Hi, the sidebar ad in the homepage and search result screen is overlapping the page contets. Works OK in the giveaway page.

I disabled my adblock for steamgifts. (I've forgotten to add to whitelist earlier - sorry) The first one which I saw was from a shop in which I bought my laptop. (and it is worth to mention - it is a shop which operates only in some parts of Poland) So I would say that relevancy isn't a problem for me.

I think you could add a single ad in forums. On the left, below my discussions tab - similar to the one from homepage/giveaway pages. A single ad shouldn't be too annoying, and it would help you in generating more revenue.

No problem for me. You need them to keep the site alive. :)
My first ad is for Grey Goo, the new RTS so that's all fine.

You're not stealing anything by whitelisting ads. They don't even use SG's bandwidth.

Of course not, it's those who block ads who are stealing bandwidth. When using an ad blocker, you are preventing the websites you're visiting from their revenue which would pay for the bandwidth you're using.

My take on this has always been, if you like a site enough to visit, deal with the ads. If the ads annoy you that much, don't visit the site, at all. What I find hilarious are the people who threaten to leave if they have to see the ads. It's like your roommate who steals your food and threatens to leave if you ask him to pay his part of the rent.

This is totally unrelated, but please make a statement about the planned addition of mods, it's becoming a regular sight seeing people blatantly breaking the rules on both SG and ST and mocking anyone who even bothers saying something about it, begging and calling out seem to become more and more common on the forum and ever since there's a 3 thread limit on ST people seem to think they're entitled to using them all and actively bump all 3.
I'd really appreciate at least knowing what we can expect, that being said the new site does make everything a lot easier and all the time and effort you've put in is much appreciated.

Well I browse the forums mostly now so they don't bother me. Although from the adds I did see seemed quite relevant to my search history.

The ads I get seems to be kinda... weird. It seems to know that I'm a female somehow and is giving me all girly ads like ads for shoes or dresses or fashion accessories ._. Which is weird because I literally NEVER search that kind of stuff. Also, there was one at the beginning that was McDonalds. So apparently girls = fashion and food.

Well I might have spoken too soon. The first adds were PODS, which I have been looking at because I plan to move soon. But lately I've been seeing weird adds. One about a 55 year old woman exercising and another about a "god vitamin". Not even sure what I searched for these adds to show, only thing I can think of is livestrong...

Google's analytics tracking does a hell of a lot more than look at your searches.

If you're concerned about the privacy implications of the tracking or you just don't want personalized ads, you should consider updating your Google ad preferences by using the 'opt-out' features at the bottom of the page. That page will also show you (at least some of) the demographic information Google stores about you to personalize your ads.

Do be aware that Google can and will track you even when you're logged out, and I'm not sure whether your opt-out preferences will apply when you are logged out but still being tracked. As well, of course, not all ads are provided by Google, and other ad services can still track you. Depending on your country and/or region, you may be able to opt out of tracking on a wider scale by using something like AdChoices opt-out feature, or by disabling third-party cookies or enabling the Do Not Track header in your browser settings.

I'm already opted out but when you use so many of their services I suppose it's inevitable that they'd get their hands on info on me.

While I don't have a problem with having an ad in the sidebar, the sidebar is now way too damned wide. A 200px-wide ad unit would fit much better.

Feedback: I'm really iffy on these ads I saw on the giveaway pages. People might mistake them for free download links for the games being given away or something. I don't know if the ad content can be controlled that precisely, though.
