So I just opened an account for my nephew since he was interested in building up his own steam library. I've gifted him like 5+ games from steam store and also some keys from Humble Bundle and Bundle Stars. I've even loaded up some steam wallet on his account through my paypal account. But he is still level 0 on steam profile. Any ideas to why?

Levels for Steam are gained from making badges.
Badges are made from cards.
Cards are dropped from games.
Games that have cards are labeled as such. Lol ok!

niece

Welcome her to Steam.

Sorry for the bad grammar. Anyways, I'm pretty sure you will get a badge ASAP when you redeem in some games.

Yes. You get a game collector badge. Idk how much exp it gives, but you need 100exp to become level 1, and 100exp for every level till level 10.

it gives very low exp tough!

when you redeem in some games

Cards, when you make badges, levels are increased.
I do not think I have ever received a level from just redeeming games. Aside from the badge for having games.
And that badge takes forever to level up.

Yep. That badge. Game collector badge will give +100 exp upon the first game redeemed on steam. At least that's what I remember.

100xp isn't much. I have to get 1000xp for every 1 level I earn.
And once you start earning on that badge, you only get like 1xp per game added.

Well, my concern is that he hasn't gained a level yet. Much less gaining a badge on steam. From level 1-10, users should earn a level for 100 xp a level. As of now, he has 22 games on library including the free ones this weekend.

Spend the $5 needed to fully unlock the account. Make some badges using cards and see where that takes you.

I guess the only way for him ATM is to spend the funds on the market. I can't trade with him yet since he just made the account yesterday.

And you won't be able to trade until he spends the money anyways, that is part of the new system.

Oh well, I'll just make him wait for the Summer Sale before he use the wallet funds. In the meantime, I'll just share my library with the family feature.

Thanks for the help!

You're ignoring the most important badge--the community badge.

you only get like 1xp per game and 100xp for crafting any badge. you can see your level and xp in you badge tab on steam.

I think that you need to SPEND 5 dollars. So, from his steamwallet, buy something for 5 dollars or more, and you should be set

So I would need to have him spend the wallet funds in order to get the levels going? Didn't know Steam got an update like that.

If you added $5 to Steamwallet you're good to go, no need to spend them.

You need to have at least 5$ of your total purchase in steam (Steam wallet, etc...)
But you don't need to purchase anything just add 5$ to his wallet via a steam cash card or something.

Should there be any concern about Steam levels? Does it really matter?

Does it matter to you what other people do?

Completely depends on what it's about. There are many cases where people should be concerned about what other people are doing. In this case no not really but I was curious as to why it would matter just for curiosity's sake.

Exactly what you concerned yourself about.. Lol ok!

Steam levels
Does it really matter?

I don't know. Does it really matter to you? If it does, how does another members level affect you?
If it doesn't, then why concern yourself with it at all? Lol ok!

Just said I was curious, dude. I genuinely don't know why Steam levels would matter and I'd like to know. I'm not sure what you're getting at. Maybe have another drink. I had a lovely glass of Chivas Regal recently. Definitely recommend.

Wow. I was just asking and stating things. No reason to get all defensive. Sorry for touching a nerve. Lol ok!
Obviously Steam levels isn't your issue, but rather, me.

lol oh man this has been a mess of misinterpretation. I don't have a problem with you or Steam levels. I was really just curious and I don't understand your replies to me. None of my comments have been intended as malicious.

You need level 8 to get free Summer/Winter cards - so, it matters around $2 a year :P

level also affects how often you get card booster drops, giving more cards to sell. So the difference can be a few dollars more.
But in the end, it's all about cards & driving the card market. Valve's the only real winner as the sheer volume of transactions they're skimming off of would make it profitable for them.

yes, it does. i don't trust people with low levels. by low levels l mean ≤5 level new accounts or ≤10 level old accounts. they look like fake profile/bots/alt account to me. then again i saw a potential scammer with really high steam level once.

Yeah but I'm only level 12 and I've been on Steam for 7 years apparently. That's only because of the number of games in my account. I don't make badges or anything and I'd assume there would be others like me. That does seem like a fair judgement for a lot of accounts though just not perfect.

What I was saying is I would be under 10 if I didn't get a pile of crappy bundles lol. I did read your post and thought my reply was reasonable. I even said it was fair judgement! I'm not having a good time in this thread. I'm not trying to argue :(

like i said i once saw a high level account who was doing "+rep for +rep" so it's not the only thing you should rely on but it's a good parameter to keep most of the bots and scammers away.

I like how your nephew changed genders in the course of a paragraph.

Words about family relations can be difficult for a foreigner, especially if one has a language where there isn't as much of a difference in words for gender as in the Germanic languages (which seem to be all about gender).

Thanks for the follow-up, sir. I think criticisms like this is also a way for me to improve with the foreign language, so I'm grateful for it.

You have to get badges by trading cards. You can do the community badge for some easy ex but that will give you until level 2 I think. Gifted games don't always count, I'm not sure because in my library I have 63 games but my steam badge says I have 57. Free games don't always count though!

I think your right about first badge giving 100exp from games before but why not get the community badge too to level up? Super easy to get.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

it's easy, first game you own gets you 100xp, do the Pillar of Community for another 100xp and Community Ambassador for also 100xp that's 300xp that will be enough to get you to lvl 3.

Level 1 - 10 = 100XP Per Level
Level 11 - 20 = 200XP Per Level
Level 20 - 30 = 300XP Per Level

etc etc

after that you will have to create badges from cards.
