It has some bug fixes, and restored content, but also adds other bugs, so it is recommended to start with a fresh save/file with the mod on.

If you can get it working, most definitely. The first one was an especially wonderful game, the second one... let's say it's easy to see where they ran out of money and cut the game short. If you like the first one, then the second one is an easy recommendation as well :)

I personally enjoyed both games and would highly recommend playing through them both. The combat in KotOR is very different from the Jedi Knight series; the former being a blend of active time & turn based combat, while the latter is active time action.

Out of all the Star Wars games that I have played, I would place the KotOR series at #1.

Both are great, and the second one seems to have a mod that restores cut content, so great time to play them.

should be pretty good quality

lol, Obsidian is well known for their games to be buggy as hell, and Kotor2 is probably the buggiest game they ever made ;p

That being said, it's still worth playing (and Kotor 1 even more). These are arguably the best SW storylines in any SW videogames, not to mention crazy amount of additional lore. If you are fan of SW universe they are well worth playing just for story and lore.

Outcast and Academy are my absolute favorite, especially the latter. Never again does any Jedi game have fluid combat like Academy.

They are predominantly RPGs. The combat isn't like in action rpgs or Jedi Academy where you jump and slash etc. It's turn based like in X-Com.
You can read that in the wiki:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars:_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Wars_Knights_of_the_Old_Republic_II:_The_Sith_Lords
Never played the second but the first one was great. I played it on release on the original X-box a long, long time ago in a galaxy ....
Anyway, if you like SW and RPGs and aren't just after the actual shooting/swordfighting you can have a lot of fun with the games.
Just wait till you meet HK-47 :D

Although quite different from the games you've mentioned, they are really good games. It's more of an RPG style with some action motion mixed it which gives you an allusion of real time. But all the attacks are on timed turns and dice rolls, sort of like NWN 1, and you can pause the action to plan your moves.
The story and content is really good and not like the typical Star Wars--especially KOTOR2.

Currently playing the first KOTOR. I've put in almost 10h so far/ Although it was great in its time it sure hasn't aged well, gameplay is meh. Tbh the only thing keeping me from uninstalling is its story, good dialogue, and coloured lightsabers. Other than that I'd say the two force unleashed games have way better combat and gameplay feel in general.

KOTORs are pure rpg games, reminiscent of other great bioware titles in terms of scenario and unforgettable characters. You can't really compare them with action games. Don't put them in the same sack as other star wars games, they are simply different. They use tactics, turn based style with space to pause/unpause. Story and characters is what they excel in. Graphics are not the best my today's standards, but keep in mind that there are modifications out there, some of them even improve the textures etc in high definition resolutions. Great stuff. In any case, first game was a masterpiece for me.

KotOR 2 is only advised if you literally know nothing about the old Expanded/Extended Universe (it is usually called EU and both names are floating around), since its story actually buttrapes the lore even worse than Bethesda's Fallout 3 did the original Fallout lore. (Which is ironic, since KotOR 2 is made by Obsidian, made by mostly the old Fallout crew, who in return managed to show exceptional lack of lore knowledge here.)

Otherwise, it is a deep and brooding story. Very brooding. It is a constant trope with Obsidian, but they are really good at writing these kinds of characters. They also tried to spice up gameplay a bit, which in some parts got better (weapon modding), some parts got worse (every minigame). Play it with the content restoration mod that makes the plot make a tiny bit more sense.

As for KotOR 1, it is the first game by BioWare that followed the same formula they did up until Mass Effect 1. It is a typical adventure story with SW backdrop, completed with their patented quirky characters that range from rather funny to borderline tragic. Where it really differs from its sequel is that KotOR 2 is all about brooding and moping around and even saving the world comes with a rather large "but…", and KotOR 1 is your typical "no matter how terrible it looks, you can always redeem anyone and achieve a happy end in all sub-quests" type of bit cartoonish storytelling.
With some enjoyable minigames. Assuming you like drag racing and simplified blackjack.

Both are usually among the best cRPG games and they hold up rather well even today, if you can accept that their combat system is an adaptation of a pen-and-paper one, so no flashy loot-based "roleplaying" like in modern games (where apparently experience points equal role-playing, not the ability to shape the events of the game in any fashion), with some notable exceptions (Tyranny, Witcher 2-3).

By pen-and-paper, I meant literally: KotOR is more or less based on the second and more famous Star Wars role-playing bookset, or more precisely it uses a similar modified d20 system, that itself was a stripped-down, simplified version of the 3rd edition of the Dungeons & Dragons rule books. It plays like a classic "sit down with your friends around the table" campaign, only the computer makes all the dice rolls in the background for you to not slow down the game. BioWare actually used a tweaked version of this system even in Dragon Age 1-2 and Mass Effect 1, only there they let the player issue the attack commands in a more traditional video game style.
