Are you sure it's not that somebody leaked the link?

Not bleeding likely. The only other people I've seen from here are all people I know frequent the other site, and aren't the type to leak it anyway.

Its on a public site. Google does work with the right keywords, it was the second hit. :(

Those tips seem like a good idea. I'll be sure to use those next time.

Didn't want to use a Shortening service, had enough people unwilling to trust the link, thinking a site like this was more likely a scam. Picture link might be the best way in the future.

That seems the best solution, imo, if you need to mention both steamgifts and the game name in the description.

Unfortunately, there is no official group for the site, instead three fan groups, all public. That would get a ****load more leeches just joining one of those and entering straight from my profile.

Thousands of members on the site. Possibly into the millions. Very active.

but looks like you already have a group like that. did you just drop it, or is it for another website/community? i mean i know where is it for thanks to a little google search but can't be sure which community are you talking about in this thread.

I'm going to assume that you linked to the giveaway somewhere, because generally-speaking, something like Google'll only find new pages to index by following links. It will of course be linked by pages on SG, like the entered giveaways page, but provided cg's done his stuff right, Google shouldn't ever see one of those.
So my main tip is, 'Don't link it.' Leave raw text for someone to copy/paste à la steamgifts.com/giveaway/xxxxx
, preferably without the protocol in front. If linking is absolutely necessary, add rel="nofollow"
to your HTML, assuming you can. That should stop Google and 'nice' search engines from indexing it.

That might work, thanks for the tip. Though I just mentioned the site in the topic title, and that is what Google found.

...Damnit. I'm pretty sure the same thing happened with my giveaway a few days ago. Turns out I gave the game away to someone I never saw before. He claimed he didn't remember where he found the link, but that would explain it...

Don't post links on open pages, that's the only way to avoid it.

Delta, are you referring to the ga you made on some pic sharing site?
Because it took me hardly 10 seconds to find it..
I think it worked because you linked it rather than leaving a raw format.
ofcourse i may be wrong. Never knew invite only links can be found that way as well. Thanks for the heads up. I'll use raw links if and when necessary.

I didn't think it would bee that easy to find such links. But after a quick search I did just now, I see your problem.
Using images instead of links might work, like someone already suggested.
Some other things you could do: Do not use the same username on those pages. Yeah I guess that isn't really a helpful tip, but it probably would have stopped me from finding the links.
Do not mention the game name and cut it off at the end of the link.
Do not use the word giveaway (which is kinda hard since it is part of the link)
Maybe also avoid mentioning Steamgifts. (again kinda hard cause of the link)

lol gorok, you just mentioned (indirectly) how to search for it xD

Well the GA are over, and I can edit/delete my suggestions if DeltaBladeX wants me to.
I'm also not sure how big of a problem it really is in general. Without the name of the game it often should be tedious to find the giveaway unless there are other ways to narrow down the search, cause Google will find too many things. But I'm not an expert when it comes to Google searches.

I'm kind of surprised, I don't think I've ever managed to get into any private giveaway, open or closed, through google.
Edit: wait, it's not a direct link to the giveaway

It was for a number of people that include those who would have never heard of the site.

So, made a giveaway recently for another site I use, and turns out at least one person used Google to go hunting for such giveaways. Kind of sucks that I make a giveaway for another community, and now I have someone with nearly 100 wins more than giveaways entering when they don't use the other site. >:(
