Lol?
The prevailing theory is that its free in order to "force" users to a single coherent platform that is much easier and much more cost effective to maintain rather than 4 different platforms along with their respective "pro" or "enterprise" solutions. Slipping ads into their products is just another shit move, but every company seems to agree that its the perfect solution to pad their bottom lines. Adobe, Java, Mozilla, Chrome, and so on all slip ads into the product, and MS has been doing it for Office360 for awhile too.

Why are you forced to upgrade? I still run a small datacenter in my home on winME. I mean, sure you'd want to stay up-to-date to run games and such, but you're not FORCED to upgrade.
Also, I hope that once other low-level APIs get introduced we'll get away from this microsoft dominance. At this point Vulkan doesn't have to be better than DX12, it just needs not to be tied in with an OS that tracks the contents of your e-mails in Outlook.

We already have Linuxes, hello.
The thing is that there are too few games (which means, developers) supporting Linux natively.
If somebody is not playing many games, or his whole library consists only of Linux-supported games, there's really no reason to stick with winshitdows.
SteamOS is supposed to change that, and somehow slowly it goes forward.

Well the topic was with gaming at hand(since we're on "steamgifts") but if you want to go for another use yeh sure don't really need to upgrade and all; so basically there comes a time microsoft stop supporting the old windows and then there's DX12(you basically mentioned it). I don't know how successful Vulkan would be so I wouldn't comment much on Direct3D alternatives just yet but DX12 means better performance if we believe what microsoft is telling us so far.
But yeh, I think Vulkan might be a success since its based on Mantle which is already implemented by AMD in games and stuff but that will be possible if they are able to break the microsoft dominance.

Vista support ends in 2017, 7 in 2020 and 8 in 2023. Support for XP has ended, but it is still working fine. As of last month, XP was ranked 3rd for most used OS on desktops and laptops with 11.98% of people still using it.

I'm still running XP 14 years after it was released without any problems. Microsoft says they will support Windows 7 until 2020 and that doesn't mean it will stop working in 2020 since support for XP has ended and it still works fine.

That's because he now spends all his time pushing vaccines and thinking of new ways to reduce the population of the world.

Vaccines are a much needed thing for populations to remain alive, I dont see why you make it sound like "pushing for vaccines" is a bad thing.
Advocating for lower birthrates is not the same as expressing or hoping for some sort of genocide as you make it sound like.
Bit ironic that you make it sound like vaccines are bad, which saves hundreds of thousands of lives ever year, and then also say its bad to curb population growth in areas that simply cant maintain it, or need it once things like vaccines and modern medicine takes root.

Solitaire is only the beginning, so stop saying: "I don't care i don't play it! ;)

At least they could have made it a friggin once-off purchase....

Clearly Microsoft don't have enough money, lol. Maybe if they put their Flight Simulator on there or something but trying to monetise Solitaire is ridiculous. The greater issue is: are there any other ads in there? I'm not interested in an adware/freemium model for my OS.

Nothing is sacred, everything is permitted.
Now, jokes aside, like article says: "Windows 10 itself is free, so complaining too much about this might seem ungracious. But I think that perhaps what we're getting here is a flash of insight into exactly why it's free. Fair trade?"
http://www.pcgamer.com/windows-10-solitaire-requires-a-subscription-to-remove-ads/
Question: Do you expect "this game required DX12 to run. Choose if you want ads infested DX12, or $10 a month DX12 Premium"?
