Wear rough-textured pants like jeans, and use your leg, like most of us do? ^.^
If that doesn't work, typically the course of action is to buy a trackball mouse or similar, but if you can't even afford a $1 mousepad, I imagine that's not currently an option for you. :S

Optic mice work by detecting changes in the light refraction of the LED light. Smooth or reflective surfaces (like the cover of a paperback) don't work as well as, for example, the cover of a jacket-less hardcover book. Anything that has good difference in texture or coloration, and isn't reflective (in the way shiny or polished or glossy things are), should allow your mouse to work responsively. The jeans thing wasn't a jest- I've personally always found that to be the easiest option to work with, myself.

Tho I still don´t get how a blank sheet of paper works better than a niceley structured wooden surface...

I use to tape one to my desk all the time. He will probably need a hard surface though if he is going to be in bed. It would be a bit hard to use a piece of paper on top of blankets.

No taping required here, i just put it on top of a real mouspad which funnily enough also does´nt work better than the blank sheet.

I have a couple old Logitech and Microsoft optical mice that work on almost anything. I use to tape it down because I used it for counter strike and needed precision with quick swipes, couldn't have it moving. I would put it directly on my desk because I have a smooth polished surface desk, but my hand sticks to it so it is easier to slide with paper. The paper would never stay without taping it down.

Now I use a Steelseries QCK.

Optical and laser mice work on different surfaces. Search online for what type of surfaces they work best on or just try some different things. If you will be gaming, you will probably want something hard for consistency. Do you have a large hardcover book or a smooth piece of wood? Is your desk wood, does it have shelves? A shelf would probably be a good size if you can get one out without having to take the entire desk apart.

Edit: Cutting board? (hopefully not too cut up)

Use the touchpad or pointing stick built into your laptop.
