So, I decided to really work in my backlog (I mean I at least categorized everything and stuff) and I see that I have some games that I just don't want to play. I don't mean games I never played, but games that I gave a decent chance and ended up not liking them at all*. Of course I only try to acquire (buy, win, get gifts) stuff I believe I'll like, but even the most hotly awaited game may end up a flop. So, I just decided to let go of those games that offer me no excitement and no fun.

BUT I see my stats suffering because all those games I ended up abandoning because I didn't like them will count as not finished for eternity.

So, on one hand, my OCD cries in the shower. On the other hand, I really don't want to do the chore.

Any words of comfort?

*Note: It doesn't matter if it's a good or bad game, critically acclaimed or hated, expensive or cheap, only if I enjoy it.

Do you persevere to beat a game, even if you really, really don't enjoy it? (If yes, I admire your discipline. If no, share your thoughts about guilt :-) )

I play games for fun and relaxation.
When a game stops being fun or becomes work, I move on to another.

I can be very ambitious when it comes to completing games and sometimes I find myself playing games I really don't enjoy anymore, but luckily that doesn't happen to often. I mostly stop playing when I don't enjoy a game, because fun is what gaming should be about...

Well, yes, me personally I know the truth (the category in the Steam client is "Not Worth It"), but the stats showing on my profile pages in various places are just hard numbers. It's not the end of the world, but I'm the kind of person who likes nice little bows on top of my projects. :-)

I'm at the same time not competitive and stubborn, I guess. :-)

I use a spreadsheet for me (and for complete on-and-off-Steam backlog), BLAEO for the motivation and Steam DB for reference (which is the worst of the three).

I logged into Backloggery (and Darkadia and Groovee and HLTB), saw that it wants to log each game by hand and exited right after. Too much work for me.

I could remove them from my library, but, you know, my OCD again :-).

I guess I have a nice nomination for "First World Problem of the Month".

If I am not enjoying a game I will not continue playing it. And have no regrets about it.

Exceptions are Steamgift wins (I usually persevere and beat them) and games I think will become enjoyable after some more effort (grand strategy, story heavy, simulation...).

In the end I play games to have fun and I don't want to turn gaming into work :)

I used to not trust my instinct, but now I'm older and wiser and can tell early on if I'll enjoy something (game, movie, guy) early enough. So, even if it requires effort to build up the game experience, if the game is good, I won't abandon it.

You may want to check out CAYNE if you liked STASIS. I have not played either game yet, so I can't comment on that. I have read that it doesn't matter if you play CAYNE before or after STASIS.

To 100% you can just go back through your saves if you have enough. No need to play the whole thing over again. I was watching the second season of The Expanse between short stints which kinda had some similar themes.

Remove the games you won't like from library then.
Cuts down the backlog and bumps up completion rate at the same time.

May get you into trouble if you won those games on this site, but then why did you enter the giveaways in the first place ?

Comment has been collapsed.

Um, you can never know 100% that you are going to like a game, can you? That's why I entered the giveaways (btw, out of the 3 games I've won, one is completed, one is 75% achievements and one I'm unsure yet). Still, I see this question a lot, and I think it's a bit presumptuous.

Games are a way to have fun, to relax, to enjoy something. No matter how beloved a game might be, if I don't enjoy it, not even with mods, I simply won't play it anymore.
When I still played MMOs, I've met a lot of people who treated their game like a job. They needed to do certain things and some even stated, that they have to do their daily routine before they can begin to 'have fun' and that sounded so incredibly wrong...
As long as somethings fun, I play it. When it feels more and more like a chore, I try to find out why and if it's simply a "flaw" in the games design, I'll stop. Mindless grinding, unnecessary hard levels, frustrating gameplay elements... I have so many games, no need to bother with these things.
If I just made the wrong choices, I adjust my behaviour until it's fun again. I concentrate on the story again, I don't try to beat this stupid boss until I'm actually ready, etc.

I know, some people need a challenge, or... like hard games.
I don't ^^" I like to relax and have fun. I hardly feel like I've achieved something when beating a difficult enemy, or found just the right pixel to jump in order to make it through a level.
I feel good when I'm having fun :3 and for me, fun means that I don't have to force myself or feel exhausted, tired, enraged or frustrated when I quit, or beat the game.
Yes, I know, I'm a filthy casual ^^

I agree about the difficulty. I'm a casual player and my difficulty meter stops at "rewarding". If it frustrates me, it gets poor marks.

Some people are very disciplined, but I like fries. :-)

All power to the casuals :D
It's always a bit disappointing when a game looks great like Cuphead, but I just know that it will be too difficult for me to enjoy it.
Well, who doesn't like fries? :3

I used to do that with series, I kept watching even after they deteriorated, because "I have invested so much time till now", but I don't do that anymore. I can gauge pretty well (and early) if it's a bump in the road or the magic is gone.

I know what you mean, I've even bought for myself stuff that I thought I'd love but in the first few minutes turned out wrong. It happens, don't worry about it.

I do, up until a certain point. I own enough games where I can say "I'll come back to it another time..." and never run out of things where I'll have to do so :)

If the controls are bad, I can't even try to finish it.
I'd recommend moving on to the next game, you can always come back to the game later and finish it.

The controls are so important, I should have added a third option:

  • Yes.
  • No.
  • It depends on the the controls.

Nah, when I say I'm done, that's it. I never come back to a game (book etc) that I abandon.

I have special category on steam - "bore me to death". Right now I have 79 games on it and I don't feel guilty AT ALL. They had their chance, they failed, amd I have a exacly 276 games to play (PC nad Console). And some other small things to do, like, I don't know, life :D . I don't have time to play boring games.

You know what? You're right. Why should I feel guilty if the game didn't entertain me? I'm keeping this attitude!

And what's more, there are some praised games - Alan Wake (after 8h - boring), Deponia (5h - cant stand the main hero), Brutal Legend (7h - didn't likeTower Defence mechanic). My record is Beat Hazard - after 7 minutes I felt sick because of the flashing of the screen. No remorses.

I give a game a chance, but if it's not fun, I don't feel guilty.

To me, there are two sub-categories: "I'll never play this again" and "I'm just not in the mood right now, but maybe someday I will be."

Casino Noir is in the 1st category -- wow, that game was boring.

Stardew Valley is in the 2nd category -- I bounced off the first time, but I plan to come back and try again.

No game needs to be "finished". Play until you're sure that you don't like it. Play as long as it's fun, or as long as you can push yourself with tricks (repetitive games + listening to music or podcasts). There is nothing shameful if a won game turns out to be a flop or you don't like it, so get your OCD from the shower :)

i beat wins and some gifts even if i disliked them, just based on respect to the person that gave it to me. but if i bought a game and i ended up not enjoying it, i would probably discard it and move on.

IMO, I owe a person to give their game a decent chance, the same I would give to my own money, but not do something that I really don't want to do. But I see your point.

I have special category called "Backlog / Dropped". I describe it as "it was in my backlog once and I want to finish it eventually, but not right now". Of course, I tried to play and finish every single one of those, hence backlog -> dropped. Sometimes I decide to drop a game for good, but usually it just stays like that.

I might come back later to some of those titles in the future, but they have lowest priority. I usually drop game when it simply becomes tedious to play and I no longer have fun from it. Some good examples in this category include Fallout 4 where I put over 150 (!) hours into the title, yet never actually finished the main story, and dropped interest in it actually because of how dull it was.

I'm really picky with games right now so there is almost no room for mistakes. However in the past I made some mistakes like activating some games of which genre I don't even like just to try them out and getting achievements from them in the process. Now they are haunting my completion rate so currently I'm going through a torturous phase of playing stuff I didn't enjoy just to finish them because I don't want to have unfinished games in my library. There aren't a lot of games like that though, only about 6 or something and I'm already done with one of them.

I find it only natural to try genres I might not like, or else I'd just play the same 5 games for eternity. :-)

You are definitely one of the disciplined ones.
