Just had to say "conversations/friendly banters", because even though I'm no social butterfly, I can't help but, at the very least, check out the latest discussions whenever I pop in, and sometimes I find there's something worth saying... and when someone replies and genuinely wants to talk, man, that's the best feeling. Not necessarily exclusive to SG, but I don't use other social media much. I really like looking forward to seeing a notification from someone I've started talking to ^^

aww, i agree with that. it does feel nice chatting with users. specially familiar ones and reading them share experiences. i dont always have something to add but its fun learning further on stuff they either did or have an interest in.

neither do i, this site is quite cozy! it might derail the subject a bit but what else do you like using? (maybe we can keep it game related lol) πŸ“³

I do have accounts on Facebook and Twitter, they should be at least 10 years old by now, but I just use FB to stay in touch with people I know IRL, and uh... well, a Twitter account is useful for just being able to view the damn site from time to time. It's really easy to get roped into scrolling through my timeline though, so I try to stick to just looking at the post I'm interested in and then I bounce.

I definitely use YouTube the most, although the level of discussion over there isn't the highest (my personal shining example will forever be that time back in 2018/19, when I wrote a comment about having a cold, and 3 years later I'd be receiving replies from people going "OMG COVID??"). And to keep it game-related, gaming is definitely the type of content I've spent the most time watching, ever since back before I even had an account, probably. I wish I could recall the start of that adventure, or at least have a means of checking my lifetime statistics for a healthy dose of astonishment and self-loathing.

facebook marketplace is a godsend for great deals, i always forget about it. its never been one i used often but theres a lot of good groups there for either humble bundles and other things. twitter as much as a dumpster fire it is, its by far one of the most useful tools and easily accessible to find whatever you need for the most part, (gaming) fanbase or meme wise.

It's really easy to get roped into scrolling through my timeline though, so I try to stick to just looking at the post I'm interested in and then I bounce.

takes some serious willpower to do that, good on you. i dont know about you but browsing the "for you page" instead of "following" is a lot more fun though i hear people hate using it.

(my personal shining example will forever be that time back in 2018/19, when I wrote a comment about having a cold, and 3 years later I'd be receiving replies from people going "OMG COVID??").

i enjoy that a little too much lol, what a silly thing for them to do. love the Internet.

likewise! i like speedruns (real ones or fake ones that get explained), playthroughs w/wo commentary. i been getting more into watching livestreams either when active or posted and its been fun. cant believe i didnt do that before.

hey the future is near, or present? i dont remember the quote lol. what i mean is maybe we'll probably have something like that in time unironically.

I never used FB Marketplace, just watched people poke fun at it here and there. Now that you mentioned it though, I might have to check it out, seeing as I'm in the market for selling some stuff more locally.

Twitter is great, I follow loads of people who either have some interesting stuff to say or make beautiful art, it's just a shame that it's impossible to take it all in and still use social media responsibly.

Ha, yeah, I'd take that over an argument any day.

This will sound crazy, but to me, watching people play games online was like having friends. (wow, what a downer) I've never had friends to play games with (girls not being interested aside, I can imagine 15 years ago it was still more socially acceptable for boys to play video games), so that was a valid substitute, I think. I've spent so many years living like this that I genuinely can't understand people who don't like watching others play games. I started out like that IRL too, watching people play games whenever I had the chance. Gaming is my special interest (I'm an aspie), so hopefully this makes it not sound so bad in the end. Still don't really have friends to actively play with on a (semi)regular basis, but I get excited if someone wants to watch me play something, even if they don't talk on the call.

I'm more of an I'm living in the future (uh-huh) kinda gal, but I get what you mean. I'm simultaneously thinking about how other platforms have unofficial companion sites made for statistics' sake (like no matter what platform you hunt for achievements on, I'm 99% sure there's at least two different sites where you can track your progress, almost in real time) and the fact that even if someone made such a site for YouTube now, my stats likely wouldn't be 100% accurate (though still robust, without doubt).

truth right there

I've spent so many years living like this that I genuinely can't understand people who don't like watching others play games.

thats not as bad as you may think it is. could've been worse ways to cope but i view it as somewhat wholesome. livestreams can give people that extra boost cause you're able to actually chat to them sometimes, depending how big they are and all that. we all need company. in terms of people not liking to watch gaming stuff/playthroughs the main reason i get is because they rather play them themselves or not spoil it. another part could be not finding youtubers they enjoy enough to watch.

Gaming is my special interest (I'm an aspie), so hopefully this makes it not sound so bad in the end.

with or without it, it still isnt that bad. its a neat thing to have be your special interest considering how many fields and ways you can express yourself with it too are.

Still don't really have friends to actively play with on a (semi)regular basis, but I get excited if someone wants to watch me play something, even if they don't talk on the call.

you'll find people naturally, and can on here as well with the "lets play together" category. dont be afraid to join public servers or servers in general. there's always one for everybody that caters to the kinds of things you might need depending on if you want events, maybe movie nights, gaming nights, etc. the easiest thing would be joining official servers or ones big enough to properly explore (important that they arent dead). for example, among us.

I'm simultaneously thinking about how other platforms have unofficial companion sites made for statistics' sake (like no matter what platform you hunt for achievements on, I'm 99% sure there's at least two different sites where you can track your progress, almost in real time) and the fact that even if someone made such a site for YouTube now, my stats likely wouldn't be 100% accurate (though still robust, without doubt).

wasnt something that crossed my mind but you got a point lol.

that aside, you seem chill! whatever challenge you're facing, you'll get through them and achieve what you need to.

I guess I did use to watch more back when I was little and didn't know about Steam or that I could just make my own account on it and the lack of regional pricing didn't mean I couldn't buy games, lol. And one thing I hardly ever watch, even if I'm interested, are exclusively story-based games (think Telltale, Quantic Dream, Supermassive titles), because those don't have enough variety to keep them new and fresh for when I'll be able to play on my own.

There's also this weird dissonance, where in spaces related to certain youtubers, everyone will be a fan of theirs (well, duh), but outside, it's almost as if nobody likes YT gaming and thinks it's cringe. I don't know, maybe that's changed and I'm just blind to it because of how little I actually engage with people online. I want to say there's been a whole new subset of people enjoying this kind of content through VTubers, but that's a whole another can of worms.

Yeah, if only I were more creative! LOL It's almost like I'm failing at being neurodivergent, I assume it's my special interest cause I've loved games for years, before I even had a more-or-less clear picture of what I'm like as a gamer (which platforms I'd like to play, what genres I enjoy, which creators I want to follow more closely), but now it's kinda like... I just play games? I dunno, I don't really like reading news regularly or researching things obsessively (still might happen on a whim, though). I guess one thing I've been meaning to explore is girls' games, but I'd need a bunch more planning to make it a regular thing (sometimes even after a bit of sticking to a routine, I'll fall out of it for the sake of picking up something else and then I'll beat myself up about it).

dont be afraid to join public servers or servers in general. there's always one for everybody that caters to the kinds of things you might need depending on if you want events, maybe movie nights, gaming nights, etc. the easiest thing would be joining official servers or ones big enough to properly explore (important that they arent dead)

Haha, nooo. I know you mean it in good faith, but that's like the worst thing I could do. I used to think I must be some kind of special snowflake to want people to talk to me one-on-one, but after experiencing a few different servers in the last few years, I realised it's just too overwhelming for me. Even if I have muted notifications, I will keep checking for each and every new message, and even if some people take a liking to me, eventually I won't be able to take it all and the smallest miscommunication will end up really getting to me.

Now that I think about it, weirdly enough, this feels like some sort of self-isolation, but then again, I know that if someone really takes a liking to me and wants to get to know me better, they'll message me one-on-one (you'd be surprised how many people claim to enjoy talking to me or miss me when I'm not around, and then never get in touch with me) and if we're a good match, we could end up becoming friends for a long time.

that aside, you seem chill! whatever challenge you're facing, you'll get through them and achieve what you need to.

Why, thank you! That was unexpected. I want to return the feeling but idk what to say >.<

quite understandable. im the same way with that lol

maybe way back? its way too normal now to discuss that topic openly outside of the spaces and be interested in those things nowadays. depending what communities or places you tend to stick (not saying you specifically, speaking generally) i can certainly see why it could feel that why.

i accidentally missed replying to this whole section 😭 half asleep lmao

i know how you feel with that though, the smaller the better for me. a nice tight-knit community i can check up on every so often is plenty for me compared to tryna process the massive ones with thousands of members. overall they arent for everybody though. miscommunications can suck a lot too.

(you'd be surprised how many people claim to enjoy talking to me or miss me when I'm not around, and then never get in touch with me)

it happens, sometimes theres valid reasons and sometimes theres not. we all got lives we living at the end of the day. there'll always be people who enjoy ones company, only difference is the capacity.

Maybe it used to be that people thought of it as cringe, and nowadays it's just changed to assuming everybody is going to turn out to have been problematic at some point. It's a shame when someone does, but I can't stand that frame of thinking - life isn't just black or white.
There's a whole subreddit dedicated to hating on a certain channel (if you asked any of its members, it's almost guaranteed they'd say something like "no no, we just want it to do better!") and browsing it ultimately made me stop watching for about a year. And all that did for me is, I've had a bunch of catching up to do ever since then.

if it works it works lmao

Yeah, maybe. I don't like the idea of VTubers, I feel like it doesn't do any good for people who might be losing touch with reality.

it happens, sometimes theres valid reasons and sometimes theres not. we all got lives we living at the end of the day. there'll always be people who enjoy ones company, only difference is the capacity.

No, yeah, but I think I deserve an explanation. I once left a server after an unpleasant incident and then a friend sent me a screenshot of someone saying that they miss me. Well, if you miss me, message me! I don't have open DMs with you, but you might! (as in, they haven't deleted their copy of our conversation)
Or another time, I've had someone insist that they wanted to be friends, yet seemingly stopped being able to hold even the shortest conversation. I was aware they've had personal problems and maybe also some kind of executive dysfunction, but at some point you've gotta stop kidding yourself. I had to unfriend them for the sake of my own sanity.

ohhh okay yea i understand what you mean, theres merit to that. but thankfully times have changed in many ways for the better.

dont think ive experienced that but i do know what you mean and that sucks. on the bright side it didnt completely ruin it for you! thats a great thing.

ohh. okay yea i see. feel like that happens to the best of us in some form. would be nicer if they reached out after saying that but it is what it is sometimes.

im sad that was the outcome but i get it. no further comment cause those situations can be a bit tricky or complicated. hopefully it ended well though beforehand, but if not dont stress.

I don't know if I'd say that that particular thing is better now, though. Life's not black or white, people can't be expected to "become problematic soon" just because someone else who happened to be doing the same job committed some sort of a crime. It just doesn't work like that.

I guess it did, yeah. I have nothing against them, I hope they're doing okay. I just wish they communicated that they needed some time for themselves or just didn't want to keep in touch anymore.

the experience that stuck with me the most was when I cheated on my first giveaway (instead of a game code I send the winner 2 boxes of Ted Cruz swimsuit photos) and when I came back home later that night cg came out from under my bed and beat me with an HDMI cable.

I haven't been here long enough to make any real contribution. All i could think about is the christmas event, and it has already been heavily mentionned.
I'd say I've learnt to look for and do all sorts of things with 5-character strings (like here, for example).

All the friendly people I've met. It's great to get fun games and whatnot, but it's super cool to have some place to chat with nice folks. This forum also has a lot of good games news without all the bullshit of mainstream social media sites.

I've also won several of my favorite games on this site. I got Terraria at a time when I really needed something to keep my mind off of a ton of shit I was dealing with, so I seriously appreciate it. Same with many of my other gifts.

All-in-all, this site is amazing, in spite of its drama. Y'all are amazing.

couldnt have said it better. i enjoy the sites setup a ton and the range of things you can talk about because of the categories. more and more random and enjoyable threads are popping up again!
