Please take a look at my friend's new book:

Under the Shadow of the Plateau: Frontier Forever

In the wake of machine enslavement, Earth has become a reservation for the way life had once been. The Naturalist priesthood implements an embargo to protect humanity’s homeworld from the ravages of technology, but corruption has set in, and the world’s first Athena-class Marshal is sent to investigate.

Looks really interesting and I'll take a longer look at it on the weekend. Might use part of the birthday money some co-workers will give me next month for this. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.

Great! And...your co-workers give you birthday money?! I don't think I've ever heard of that...but good for you! :)

We give 5€ each for a gift ( and a nice signed card) for our co-workers on their birthday and get a gift + card from them on our birthdays, at least those of us who participate. Or in my case I prefer to get the money or a gift card, that way I can more easily decide what to use it for.
Same as with the cake / sweets or such that I'll bring to work on my birthday, and get to eat in turn when someone else celebrates their birthday.

Good luck to your friend.

wont be buying it though. I only buy books if I can get physical copy under 2 eur in thrift stores .... yeah I know I'm cheap don't judge me.
It's that or getting books in library for me.

I just read the synopsis of the book and, well, color me intrigued. I've not bought it yet, but I'm definitely leaning toward it. Good luck to your friend, mate!

Cheers!

Looks interesting enough.
Is this a stand-alone story or does your friend plan to make it a series? (edit: I see its a series :))
Did he write short stories first or did he jump right in the deep end?
I've always thought of writing something...yes I said something, but I lack the attention span I fear. :P

He jumped right into the novel and has not published anything previously. He has had this world in his head for many years and finally carved the time into his daily life and summer vacation to write.

He also made a comic of the 'pre-story' since he is a long time comics fan. Another big decision was how to publish it, and ended up going the Kickstarter route.

Oh cool, thanks for the info.
Great that he just did it, I've been walking around with 2 stories in my head, but feel I'm too inexperienced to just have a go at writing, that and I'm my own worst critic.

Pre-story comic, sounds like what Brandon Sanderson did with White Sand. :)

Not only the synopsis looks interesting at first, but also the writing feels good (you can "Look inside" to read a few pages). Though English is not my mother tongue and I don't usually read books in this language, so I can't really compare. It's easily understandable and I like the sentence rhythm. For a first book, it looks like a success in every way, to me at least.

On Amazon US, the purchase is a no-no for the poor Frenchboy I am : 12.99$ for the book and a disgusting 12.30$ more for shipping and import fees. But luckily, Amazon FR had a couple of copies free of charge.
While I may buy the book in a distant future, I told a friend about it, who is devouring SF books at the moment. And she bought it and got it today ! She's pleasantly surprised with the drawings. Not sure when she'll start the reading as she's in the middle of something else.

So let your friend know that his book reached the Old Continent and will be read there.

Wonderful! I passed this along to him. So Amazon FR had a few copies for free? Physical copies, or Kindle? I wonder why (but I'm glad!).

Free book, of course no. I wish it was though.
Amazon FR had a few physical copies for 11.37€, only one left at the moment, and with free shipping (actually 0.01€, a small minimal fee we have to pay for book shipping). Better than the 12.99$ (book) + 12.30$ (shipping) that Amazon US.asked for.
Free on Kindle Unlimited, as Laura1207 said earlier on this topic, is available in France too, for the record.

If you want the physical book, I will PayPal you shipping costs, or find another way to pay/reimburse. If interested, add me. If not, no worries. A-plus.

That's more than generous, and so, so, so kind. Thank you a lot ! I think I've never had such a sweet proposition before. Thank you, thank you, thank you <3
But don't worry, I'll get the book on Amazon FR. No need for a tiny book to cross the world, especially in this time of crisis, and to risk a headache if it gets lost or stuck at the frontier. I'll purchase it next month probably, I'll have a couple of things to buy at that time for a birthday, enough to reach the magic amount of 25€ to get free shipping for the whole order. Or maybe today, I may need a kettle.
Thank you again, and have a great day !

Interesting sounding story and very cool cover art. I'm short on disposable income but i'll see if I can request my local library to purchase a copy. Best wishes for the success of your friend's book!

I looked at the Amazon page. The first red flag was the glowing reviews, which I'd guess are from people close to the writer. When people gush like this over a book by a new writer, I always guess that the book is going to be crappy. The synopsis also had "It’s like Mad Max and Dune, with a touch of The Matrix", and my thought was "probably none of these", or rather that these are such disparate examples that this doesn't give any idea of what the book is like and is just hype. "Less than a year early, his twin brother Pathos went missing" also didn't inspire confidence.

Thanks to MrRenard's comment I took a look inside and read several of the available pages. It's obvious that the writer made some effort to build a world, and, I would guess, construct a plot (it's hard to judge it from reading just a little). However, the writing felt infodumpish. That is, a lot of the background was described, and characters actions, feelings and thoughts were designed to expose the world, making these characters feel less like real people and more like exposition machines.

It's entirely possible that later on, once the world is established, this is less of an issue (though there's some doubt in my mind that this drops off completely). Also, obviously writers do need to provide information about the world, and I don't think this is the worst exposition possible. However, it still felt raw. I find the connection to the characters important for my enjoyment, and when they're pausing to contemplate views just to have them explained, that doesn't do it for me.

That is not to say that it's a bad book, or that it won't find an audience. It does seem interesting enough, and I've seen books which I felt were worse written and still had an audience. For example I felt that the first Harry Potter was rather amateurishly written and found the second book quite boring and quit it mid-way. (I'm not saying that Harry Potter's writing was worse than this. I honestly don't remember. it's just an example of a book that had huge success and I felt wasn't grade A material.)

I have to say that the interest is enough to carry this off to some extent. It's not a perfect read but it did make me curious about the world. If I had to read this book, I think I could have continued it. However, that's not enough of a draw for me to actually buy it.

Thank you for your literary criticism. I'm sure my friend will look back in 10 years and see 100 mistakes or things he'd do differently from what he did in his first book.

Hopefully so. The important thing is to continue writing. If he does that, then I'm sure he'll get better and get fans who want to read his books. I admire him for getting this written in the first place. It's not a trivial task to finish a book.
