I just realized after buying Fallout 3 during the 24h sale yesterday that the version for Germans is actually cut. So as I did not buy a gift, how will the key I got from GreenManGaming redeem? Will it give me a cut version? And if so, what exactly is cut off? Will it take away the fun from splicing heads into three parts???

I risked the gamble and it redeemed as Fallout 3 Retail, just in case anyone is interested.

Yay :)

Not sure which version you will get but the German version has all blood and gore removed. You will not be able to blow off limbs.

I cant answer your questions with certainty but I will say GMG usually gives you keys based off your location/IP (from what I've seen in the past). I've seen people complain that they get an RU or some Asian key but claim to live in USA or other scenarios like that.

I don't live in the EU, but I bought Total War Rome II Emperor's Edition there a few days ago and it redeemed with an EU tag. I don't think it affects anything, but it's the first time I've received a key tagged with a different region.

Comment has been collapsed.

Well I THINK the Middle East gets EU keys too. If you're not from there then it seems more places get EU keys too, which wouldn't surprise me. From what I've read from users I've seen Australian keys, Russian, and I think Indonesian (dont remember exactly). This is just from reading posts from GMG users over the past few years so again I have no certainty on this.

Hmm. I'm not in the Middle East either. Not even close.

I don't think there's anything edited with the EU version, though. When I go to the game's page in the Steam Store it just says I already own it.

I dont think EU is edited either, I think its just like RoW or WW key for GMG. USA gets a different set of keys I believe.

In the top right corner of your client you can see your Steam username right next to your wallet amount. Click on it and choose "account details". All games are displayed then, showing off what version it is and when and where you got it from (Steam store purchase, gift, (Einzelhandel) - don't know translation, reseller maybe?, or free)

I made a step-by-step reference for you (and any others interested).

  • Click the down arrow to the right of your username in the top right corner in either the Steam client or the Steam webpage. Here
  • Click on account details. Here
  • View all your game subscriptions. If any have any regions in parenthesis after the game you'll see which region the gift/key was tied to. I've highlighted two examples from my account in red boxes. Here

Hope it helps.

Based on steamDB there is a special German retail key for the base version, but not for the GOTY version, so I'd say you're safe as long as you buy the GOTY version. But please keep in mind that I'm just guessing, I can only tell you for sure that the Fallout New Vegas Ultimate is available uncut on the steam store.

Unfortunately it wasn't the GOTY year edition. This is what I bought. Doesn't give any warning about cut versions.

I just sent a support ticket to GMG support asking the same question I asked you guys up above. Let's see what they are going to answer. My past experiences with GMG support are really good, so I'm looking forward to their reply.

here's support chat that carlest had with gmg, not sure if it helps but if they haven't changed then you wont get nothing from them

I read through the whole thing. I don't find their support bad, rather the opposite. They remained totally friendly all the way through, answered personally and explained their point of view to Carlest patiently and friendly. I tried to access region locked games on their site before and they are right in what they explain in their replies: these games I was unable to even display (for example Mortal Kombat Komplete Edition). It's as if they are nor even there. If it's their rule to strictly buy for yourself because of this then this is their rule and it's the users fault not to read before buying.
I once bought a copy of Rayman Origin there and realized after my purchase that I hadn't bought a Steamkey but a Capsule game. I adressed my issue to the support and explained them I bought without paying much attention, assuming Steamkeys for granted and they refunded immediately. I got a very friendly reply from the same guy that wrote Carlest, so I really can't complain. Compared to the generic answers you get from Steam support (if any at all) what I just read is gold.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Don't think Carlest wanted to really understand. There shouldn't be written an EU behind the name of the product because it's not ONLY available to people within that region. As they say, if the person had ordered from India he/she would have a working key. So I agree with Troieve, their support isn't bad.

Comment has been collapsed.

Hmmm, I'm not quite sure what to do or believe now after the answer I got from GMG (see above). Did you buy your key from GMG?

But then again, a key is a key, totally doesn't matter where it's coming from. Thank you for your post.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I just checked and it was a retail key for the GOTY edition, so I guess it doesn't matter where it comes from :) I'm sure that I activated it in Germany and that it is the uncensored version (same for NV as a gift copy from the US). The only censored version you can get is from Steam or some German store.

But did you read what GMG answered to my ticket? That region restrictions for games are enforced by steam once you redeem the game?! That makes me really insecure.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

That isn't correct, the restrictions are based on the packages, like this, and these packages are tied to keys, at least in my experience.

Here's the answer I got from GMG support (gee, they are fast!)

 Hello ...
 Thank you for your ticket.

As region restrictions for games are enforced by steam once you redeem the game, based on the region you
are located in, it is most likely that you will receive a German version of the game along with any region
 restrictions imposed in your region.

 Apologies for any inconveniences caused.

If you require any additional assistance please feel free to contact us again.

 Kind regards,
 Niral

Thanks. And puzzling all the informaation in this thread together I'm quite sure now that I will redeem a censored version. I'd be fine if it was the GOTY edition, but it isn't. And as you wrote in an earlier post: there is a special German retail key for the base version. Dammit.
Maybe I'll create a giveaway with it or just trade it away. After all it was just 2 €, so well. See if I find a friendly gifter from overseas ;) I consider myself lucky I didn't redeem it straight away after buying yesterday. Lucky me!

Merry Christmas to everbody and thanks for all your answers!

That's pretty inaccurate, cause if you get a ROW key, it should be registered as ROW, so it's uncut. If you receive a DE key, which is german, it should be registered as the cut. Steam only detects, if it's ROW, or not, and if it's ROW, then it registers as ROW. If GMG gives you a DE key, then it's their "fault".

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Can you confirm this by any chance? Has there anywhere anything been written about that officially?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I bought a L4D2 ROW key and it activated uncut so unless it is a special DE key you will get the uncut game. For AU GMG store they put notes like this when it is not a ROW key, I don't know if they do that in Germany usually.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This is the official method. Not Steam does the region locks, but the key itself holds it. I pre-ordered Borderlands The Pre-Sequel from Hungary (my home country), and the box says that this game is only activateable (and suspectedly playable) in Hungary, Poland and Bohemia(?). So if you'd try to activate it elsewhere, it wouldn't work, since the region lock is in the key itself.
