Tomorrow is my first active cakeday. (But I anticipate a busy day tomorrow. So, I'm doing the post today.) Tomorrow, two years ago, I discovered the site and made an account, but after seeing a lot of rough with very few diamonds (and very low odds of winning), I left and forgot about it. Over a year later, I saw it mentioned again, and came to give away some old Steam inventory items and Humble Bundle keys I wasn't interested in. I learned to hide games I don't want, and to use the wishlist feature, and I actually saw games I wanted! So, I stuck around, but the exact cakeday isn't at all special to me.

Also, cake is great. No lies. But I enjoy ice cream more. So much so that I have "invested" in a nice (consumer) ice cream maker, and I make stuff at home for a hobby. I have the Ben and Jerry's and Ciao Bella recipe books. The Ben and Jerry's book has lots of traditional flavors, but I really like the less common flavors from Ciao Bella.

So, instead of cake pictures, please post pictures or recipes of ice cream, gelato, Italian ice/sorbetto, or granitas. Less common flavors are preferred, as long as you can recommend them or would try them yourself. Give me ideas for new flavors and flavor pairings. That's the good stuff.

I'll start off with an ice cream cake, and a couple of my favorite flavors.

Edit:
New puzzle added to get to the reward train. Numbers instead of words, so it should be easier for non-native English speakers. Same rewards, solving either puzzle is sufficient. You have until 1500 GMT (if I did the time conversion correctly) on the 7th, plus two more days for the DLCs in there.

Solutions
Images are added to the post.

Pairings: For me (in the US), all of the pairings appeared in Google's 10 suggestions when I typed in "item1 and" in the search field. Understandably, this could vary in other regions, and could be challenging for non-native speakers. Once you have the pairings (always one from the left column, and one from the right), place them on the scales. Measure the difference in weight with the tick marks, with the needle tipping away from the heavy side. There are 26 tick marks, so convert the indicated tick to the alphabet.

Odds: I think this is a simpler concept. What are the odds of picking balls of specified colors randomly from the fishbowls? The odds can all be expressed in a fraction of x/26, so convert x to a letter in the alphabet.

Man, I thought I'd figured out the puzzle, but I'm still stumped. Located the significant stuff, count was right, thought I saw a pattern that I could use, but then that last one messed up my theory. [Trying to describe this without spoilers is hard :D]

Tried applying math in various ways, then conversions to other types to form characters (trying to keep this generic here), but no luck so far...looking forward to the first hint. That may be all I need. :)

Sounds like you're nearly there, just missing the final connection. As far as math, it's about as simple as math comes. I hope the hint that drops will help, but you may also figure it out before then.

Wow, I am missing something obvious here. I understand the tick marks on the scale, and found sets of things from the pairings (and I found the right number of perfect pairings) that add up to that amount, but I can't figure out what to do with what I've found or how that associates to the blanks, etc. I've run all sorts of math based upon weight values, ASCII values of various things, etc...I'm starting to do stupid things that I know aren't related. At this point, I probably don't have any more time to spend on this, but I'm looking forward to understanding the answer later.

There's no complicated math involved, and there's no ASCII encoding. The items have weights, and are paired up, so just use the scale for each pair in turn.

And in case you're just completely stuck, know that I'll almost certainly post an alternative path to the puzzle train tomorrow, since I do want enough entries on them. It will necessarily be easier. I just need to come up with the right idea tonight.

I figured it out! Finally! I feel a lot less stupid now. :D

I was doing things a bit backward at first until I remembered which direction the tilt of the scale sends the arrow. Sheesh. Some days you you can't take me anywhere. lol

Thanks for the puzzle and the GAs. I think that i entered two or three of them (I think that I already owned all of the others). Nice GAs, BTW!

Happy early cake day!
I really like the cookie ice creams but also the normal stuff like chocolate, vanilla etc. Watermelon or mango are also really nice.
Actually almost every ice cream flavor is really nice :D

Happy Early Cake Day!

Thanks for the train.

My favorite, by far, is Italian sorbet, it's just amazing.

When there's not a huge variety to choose from I go for a scoop of cassis and one of lemon.

In Rome I went to a few gelaterias and bought a bowl with 100 different flavors. :D

I've heard a lot of praise for cassis, but I've never gotten to try it. I'll make a note to hunt it down and try it.

I've actually made bubblegum (and cotton candy) by steeping gum in a cheesecloth in heated milk. It is quite good. And tzatziki does sound intriguing.

I used to make ice cream for a living, it was great. Since then, I've learned that almost anything can be good, and while I didn't make it myself, I've had corn (maize) ice cream, Cauliflower ice cream, wine ice cream, and many more concoctions.

Though, I must say, the most important thing is the quality of the ingredients and the quality of the machine. Personally, I steer clear of Ben & Jerry's because of their use of Guar Gum and Carageenan.

That's fair, but in the recipe book, they don't call for that -- just milk, cream, sugar, eggs, and flavoring. Myself, I usually add a very small amount of xanthan gum for stabilizing. I follow their base recipe because (with pasteurized eggs) I can put a sweet cream base together in five minutes, no tempering or scalding needed.

That's awesome! I too prefer ice cream to cake, particularly if it's gelato, though I haven't used my basic ice cream maker nearly often enough. Hard to make enough room in the freezer for it.

Have you tried the Talenti gelato? For store-bought gelato, I think it's really good. The double dark chocolate, chocolate peanut butter cup, coffee chocolate chip, and peppermint bark flavors are my favorite.

Anyway, happy ice cream cake day!

I've had Talenti a couple times, it's what the grocery stores have in my region. It was always good. I remember it being pricey, but I'll look again next time I'm there. I tend not to buy much unless I want a flavor that's hard to do at home.

For me, this is the "died and gone to heaven" flavor of gelato. No idea how to make it though. Happy Ice Cream Day :)
