You picked up a small rock. The sun is above the mountains, to your west.

You walk south towards the sea, holding Spot. You walk further and further into the water, forgetting that you may drown. A big wave pulls you underwater.
Comment has been collapsed.
Spot floats away. A giant eagle swoops down and clutches it in its claws, flying it away. You swim and reach the shore.

You see Spot flying away, not knowing how will eventually end up as a famous rock with fame and fortune. You dry your clothes in the sun.

To the West lies a forest. To your North, more forest.
Comment has been collapsed.
You walk into a tree. A branch falls off the tree and hits you on the head.
Comment has been collapsed.
You swing the branch back and forth. The branch is sturdy but it will only take 4-5 good hits before breaking. You have a bump on your head but no bleeding wound.
Comment has been collapsed.
You trek further into the forest. The trees grow thicker, their canopies blocking out the light and you find yourself in a dark plain devoid of trees.
Comment has been collapsed.
You poke the stick with the ground. It crumbles beneath your feet, pulling you into the newly-formed sinkhole.
Comment has been collapsed.
You hold your branch parallel to the ground as you continue to sink.

You vigorously dig deeper. The branch breaks under the force.
Comment has been collapsed.
You close your hands and starting digging deeper. Dirt accumulates in between your nails. Several nails break and your hands begin to bleed. The sheer pain makes you pass out. After an indeterminable amount of time passes, you wake up to find yourself lying by the sinkhole with your hands bandaged. Someone rescued you. You look around but find no one there.

The fire has spread very quickly, engulfing the whole forest.

He hands you 15 rounds of 30-06. You load your rifle.
Comment has been collapsed.
I ask if he needs the NATO rounds. If yes, I give it to him. If no, I move on.
I try to move forward from cover to cover, preferably when the shooting pauses for brief intervals. I also try to shoot any enemies I see, while scavenging for bullets and a helmet.
Comment has been collapsed.
You move on. He has nothing but a radio, a ration, and a will to live. You remember his face.
You come to the frightening realization that there is no cover. maybe this is why you have a head wound in the first place. as you run, you fire of shots. It quickly become apparent that running and shooting plays hell on your accuracy. You lose 8 bullets.

You see a metallic object glinting in the sunlight. You move towards it. It is a broken iron shield.
Comment has been collapsed.
Even though it is broken, the iron may have some value in the nearest settlement so I pause to consider hauling it along with me. In doing so, I remember to check my person for any items I may be carrying which could also be of value.
Comment has been collapsed.
Picking up the shield with the intent of bartering with the local smithy if nothing else, I trudge onward. After walking for an indeterminate amount of time, I reach the edge of the plain and approach....
Comment has been collapsed.
The grasslands. Blades of grass taller than man, block your way. What matter of creatures may inhabit these grasslands, waiting to pounce on their prey. You can either turn back or move forward.
Comment has been collapsed.
I pause to consider. Since the grass would obscure the sense of sight for any man entering, I would be at a disadvantage against creatures who rely more upon sound and smell. Even if a settlement existed I would never know unless the inhabitants wanted me to find it. Which seemed unlikely if they'd be living hidden in the grass. And while a short trek might take me through to friendlier lands, it might also extend for hundreds of miles.
I decide to follow the edge of the grass and head generally north (based on the position of the sun). If attack comes I can seek cover in the grass, but I still have a clear view across the plain to see it coming on side. Or to see a settlement.
Comment has been collapsed.
You move along the edge of the grass. The edge ends when you find yourself face to face with a mountain wall. You can enter the grass or turn back.

I quickly check the corpses and area around me for something useful or valuable.
After that I carefully approach the outpost trying to see if it has some kind of banners or something I can match with with either of the sides that fell on the battlefield.
Comment has been collapsed.
You find a rusty sword. Avoid getting cut by it, or risk contracting tetanus. You try discerning the allegiance of the outpost. You see banners flying, red in hue, but you cannot determine which kingdom it belongs to, as both kingdoms have red banners.
Comment has been collapsed.
As sneaking inside of the outpost would have bad consequences if I were to get caught, no matter the outpost's allegiance I decide to approach it in plain sight.

You walk towards the outpost. A voice orders you to halt or be shot.

As you move forward, two more men move toward you. They are wearing uniforms resembling your rivals. You are handcuffed and thrown into a cell.

I inspect my Cell to see if there's anything useful. I also ask a passing guard if I can speak to his commanding officer.

Tired of playing mr. nice guy with these guys and their atrocious PoW treatment I decide to break out.
I wait until the guard's patrol brings him close enough to my cell. I stick my arm out and strangle him by crushing his throat, I use my other hand to cover his mouth so he can't scream for help. I open the Cell door with the keys from his pocket.
I switch clothes and armor with the dead guard and leave him in my cell. Before I step outside I try to find a window I can peek through to scout the camp and possible obstacles.
Comment has been collapsed.
You strangle the guard and as you begin to switch armors, you are discovered. The soldier pulls out his weapon and tells you to lie down with your hands on your head.
Comment has been collapsed.
As they're unlikely to leave me unharmed after killing one of their colleagues my only chance at survival is taking out the enemy guard before he raises the alarm.
I quickly grab the dead guard's armored chest piece and throw it as hard as I can. I don't even wait for it to hit and immediately grab the dead guard's sword and charge.
Comment has been collapsed.
The chest piece hits the guard square on his back and falls to the ground with a clang. The guard stumbles but does not fall. You charge towards him, knocking him off his feet with using sheer strength.
Comment has been collapsed.
Without giving the Guard time to recover I slit his throat. I quickly finish changing my armor. Despite my disguise I don't want to risk running into another patrol. I grab a nearby torch and set the wooden roof ablaze. I quickly run outside yelling that there's a fire in the prison building and that there are still guards inside.
I ask the nearest guards to warn our commanding officer while I go gather people to help put out the fire.
Comment has been collapsed.
You change into the armor. It's a size too small but you make do. You awkwardly run outside and warn the guards while recruiting people to extinguish the blaze. As you return with people, carrying buckets of sand, you see that the blaze has spread to the residential district. Several dozen huts are ablaze and cries of help can be heard from within. The guards are unable to mitigate the spread of the fire and it soon engulfs the market district, trapping more innocent bystanders within.
Comment has been collapsed.
While this would be the perfect opportunity to escape I would never be able to forgive myself if I left these people to die.
Against my better judgement I decide to help. I grab a nearby bucket of water and drench myself. While running towards the huts I also rip a piece of cloth for a makeshift mask against the smoke.
I enter while staying as low as I can.
Comment has been collapsed.
You enter one of the huts. Visibility is low to none. All you see is thick, black smoke. The cries for help can barely be heard over the roar of the fire. Despite, trying to stay low, black smoke finds its way into your lungs and you violently cough. There are two adjoining rooms. One is blocked by a fallen beam, the other remains relatively open though partially blocked by flames.
Comment has been collapsed.
I assume the reason the people couldn't leave the hut on their own was the fallen beam blocking the entrance. I tighten the rag i'm using as a mask and start moving the beam with all my strength.
Comment has been collapsed.
Your head spins as lack of oxygen begins to set in. You use all your strength to move the beam but it doesn't budge an inch. No voices can be heard from inside anymore. You are about to pass out. But then you hear a baby crying in the adjacent room.
Comment has been collapsed.
I muster all my strength and I jump roll through the part of the door with the least flames. I suffer some minor burns but I don't even notice them due to the adrenaline and pain in my lungs. Since I probably can't take much more smoke I'm forced to crawl over the ground towards the sound of the crying.
When I reach the baby I notice its oddly unharmed, it fell on the floor so it was probably spared from most of the smoke. I don't even bother looking back at the door I came through as there's no way I could get the baby through that sea of flames and I'm already forced to crawl thanks to the smoke.
I desperately search for another way out.
Comment has been collapsed.
You grab the baby and remain ducked down. It is difficult to see anything through the thick, black smoke. However, you see a closed window.
Comment has been collapsed.
There are no words to describe my relief at finding a window. The water I drenched myself with before entering vaporized long ago and the heat was becoming unbearable. I don't even check whether the window is closed or not and punch straight through it. The glass was cheap and easily shattered but left a few cuts on my fist. I jump through while shielding the baby and land on the dirt outside. Its a good thing these huts didn't have multiple floors.
I don't even have the time to praise myself lucky at making it out with just some burns and scratches as I have to spend a full minute violently coughing and trying to catch my breath.
I step back and asses the situation, wondering at which huts had been evacuated already and how far the fire has spread.
Comment has been collapsed.
You stand up with baby in your arms. The baby is crying quite loudly, obviously shaken from the ordeal. You look around and find most of the huts have burned down to the ground. Upon inquiry, you discover that only 13 people were evacuated from the huts, from a total of 146. The rest are presumed to have perished. The market district has not fared much better with loss of over 200 lives. The fire has been brought under control and authorities are looking into the source of this catastrophe. The people are struck with grief.
Comment has been collapsed.
I ask around, asking if the people of the hut I was in had any relatives who could take care of the baby or an orphanage.
Comment has been collapsed.
The authorities direct you towards the orphanage and tell you to talk to Nurse Violet.
Comment has been collapsed.
I head for the orphanage. When I arrive there I ask a young woman in front of the building who is tending to the orphans where I can find Miss Violet.
Comment has been collapsed.
It turns out the young woman is Nurse Violet. She has set up a triage in front of the hospital and is using the orphanage as a second base to treat patients as the hospital no longer has enough space. She hurriedly asks you where you're hurt.
Comment has been collapsed.
I'll be fine with some quick disinfection and small bandages. I tell her the reason I came here was for the baby I rescued from one of the huts. It's parents probably perished and I could find no relatives in the chaos.
Comment has been collapsed.
Nurse Violet directs you to another nurse for bandages. As for the baby, well, she looks at her and tells you that you can leave her here. But without her parents, she'll probably end up falling into the bad life or dead.
Comment has been collapsed.
I ask her what good an orphanage is that cannot take care of its children and what the reason for its sad state is.
I think to myself that I'll be facing a dilemma depending on her answer. I didn't risk life and limb for this girl to end up a criminal, prostitute or dead in the gutter. But I also can't stay in this town for much longer, the girl is not a newborn but still very much a baby and hard to travel with.
Comment has been collapsed.
The nurse does not like your attitude and tells you that people here are poor as it is. Jobs are scarce and kids leave the system at 18, an age at which no one is willing to hire them. It's the same everywhere. She asks that if you're done with your holier-than-thou attitude, you need to decide what to do.
Comment has been collapsed.
At this point I care very little about what the Nurse thinks of my attitude, this hellhole has brought me nothing but trouble so far. I decide to take care of the baby for now as I couldn't leave her anywhere near this place with a clear conscience.
After getting my wounds taken care of I check my pockets and find a few coins. I can't tell how much it's worth but considering my outfit's previous owner I figure it's barely enough for a drink or two and maybe a shot at a game of cards.
With the baby in tow I head to the shopping district to see if I can find something for the trip to the nearest town.
Comment has been collapsed.
You enter the market district or what's left of it. Guards and survivor move around trying to salvage something from the wreckage. Most go away disappointed, while some find a charred body or a familiar face that shows no emotion, and are overtaken by grief. As you keep looking for a caravan to take away from this place, the baby begins to cry.

Though curious about the ring I'm more concerned with items that have immediate value for the road ahead. It's also not likely the looter would part with it for the meager amount of money I posses.
I decide to keep on searching and see some guards up ahead handing out pieces of bread and blankets, although it looks like there's a huge line. I don't have the time to wait out the line and it doesn't look like there's enough for everyone in line as it is.
The baby looks old enough to digest some solid food, I could probably feed her some of the soft bread parts for now.
I decide it's worth a shot to try abusing my uniform while I still can. I walk past the line of people and I address one of the Guards, telling him I need a piece of bread and a blanket to keep this orphan alive.
Comment has been collapsed.
The guard looks at you, his expression hard as stone. When his eyes fall on the baby, and somwthing within him softens and he smiles. He orders the other guard to get some bread, milk and a blanket.
Comment has been collapsed.
Relieved, I take it and move out of the crowd and sit down on a bench, still thankful for the guard's generosity. I carefully feed the baby some of the milk, take a few bites of bread and put the leftovers away. It's not much but it should keep the hunger away next time we need to eat.
Now that's taken care of I need to start finding a way out of this place. I discreetly start finding out if there's either a town close-by or if we're going to have to travel with a Caravan..
Comment has been collapsed.
You discover that this town is close to the coast and there are several fishing towns nearby. You can also travel by caravan to the city of Mitri. Though, you must hurry as spots are filling up. A mass of exodus of people has begun following the fire. You also learn that the guards have discovered that a prisoner escaped, stole a guard's uniform and is the cause of this devestation. The guards have begun search and the captain is checking every guard to find the traitor. Posters with your information and picture have also been posted.
Comment has been collapsed.
It appears things are settling down a bit and I'm about to overstay my welcome. I grab the blanket from my pouch and use it as a makeshift poncho to hide the guard's armor, it looks kinda tacky but doesn't really stand out among the refugees.
Upon further inquiry I find out that the Caravan to Mitri will be escorted half-way by the City Guard after which the protection of the Caravan will be taken over by Mercenaries.Though I figure that Mitri will be my best bet to find care for the girl I'm not eager to take anymore risks with the Guards.
Apparently the half-way point is a Mountain pass settlement where the Caravan will resupply and the Guards will return. To circumvent this I decide to take different route to this settlement, using some of the nearby fishing villages and inns as my resting points. Its a much longer path than the Caravan will take but since they're only as fast as the slowest part of the Caravan I should have ample time to make it there.
I hurriedly leave town and as I come to the edge of the village I see a long dirt road stretched before me, if I set out now I should be able to make the nearest settlement before nightfall.
I take a brief moment to see how the girl is doing and start travelling down the road before me.
Comment has been collapsed.
The girl, now properly nourished, has fallen asleep. You start your journey down the dirt part. Your pace is not as fast as you expected. Night falls before you reach the village. Only a few miles to go though. As you push forward, the baby wakes up. She looks at you with big, blue eyes as if trying to gauge you. As you walk into your 3rd of journey, you hear wolves howl nearby.
Comment has been collapsed.
Cursing my luck I decide that there's no use trying to make a run for it. Not to mention the sound of me trying to awkwardly run with the girl on my arm would be the same as ringing a giant dinner bell for those wolves.
I pick up a rock from the roadside and pocket it. Sadly, the guards of the previous village didn't carry any actual weapons with them aside from a small baton, so I'm left with just my rock and a glorified stick.
As I keep moving towards the village I hear howling again and I quicken my pace a little. I can't see any wolves yet but I'm sure that if they notice me they can close whatever gap is between us in moments.
All I can do for now is walk as the village is still too far to make a dash.
Comment has been collapsed.
You jog on the path, the rocking movement soothes the baby. She falls asleep again. As yo jog, you see shadows sprint by you. They are not human shadows. You hear feet planting and gripping the ground. You hear a growl.
Comment has been collapsed.
The wolves are blocking the road before me and are about to circle around me. I just passed a big boulder on the road so I make a sudden 180 degree turn and dash towards it. My sudden sprint barely fazes the wolves but it woke the girl up and she starts crying.
I barely make the boulder in time but I realize there's no way I could climb it, much less with a baby in my arm. The Wolves have easily caught up and have formed half a circle, putting me quite literally with my back against the wall. At least they can't attack me from behind. I grab the rock from my pocket and throw it at the closest wolf, it hits it straight on the nose and it falls down howling in pain. I yell loudly, grab my baton and start swinging it around menacingly, wolves never risk injury to it's pack members for prey so my actions should have made me more trouble than I'm worth.
These wolves don't appear to have gotten the memo however and keep inching closer towards me.
Comment has been collapsed.
The wolves clearly find strength in numbers and seeing their prey caught between rock and hard place, they creep closer and closer. You see no way of escape, until an arrow pierces one of the wolves hind leg. It yelps in pain, the other wolves looking around with bewilderment, as more arrows rain down upon them. Soon, most of the wolves are gone or dead. From a distance, you see 3 men approaching.
Comment has been collapsed.
I take a deep breath, the girl is still crying. I thought I was gone for sure. The archers must be incredible because I can barely see them in this darkness.
I walk towards them and as I come closer I notice only one of the men is carrying a bow, amazed, I shout ''nice shooting!''
The first thing I do when I enter talking range is thank them for saving us.
I ask them who they are.
Comment has been collapsed.
You see the men, wearing the same armor as you. City guards. They haven't seen your armor yet but they're wondering why a man and baby are traveling alone, at this time of night. They tell you that they're looking for an arsonist. The lead guards asks another guard for the poster. Lucky for you, the junior guard forgot it. The lead guard curses his incompetence, bringing his attention back to you, waiting for an answer.
Comment has been collapsed.
I tell the guard that my house burned down during the fire and the baby belonged to my neighbors. Sadly, I was only able to save the baby, leaving her an orphan. I considered leaving her at the orphanage but as I didn't want her ending up like the rest of the orphans I decided to take care of her myself and start anew in one of the nearby villages, though I underestimated the amount of time it would take me to get to the nearest one.
I tell the guards I had heard that an arsonist was responsible for the fire, though I assumed he would take the caravan out of the city as it would be easier to hide among such a large group of people. Though I tell him I'm glad they searched this way or the baby and I would have been dead.
I ask them if they're heading back or if they're gonna keep searching at night.
Comment has been collapsed.
The guards decide to escort you to the village. The baby is asleep. As you move, the guards walk behind you, muttering something to each other. You try to catch some words exchanged between them but fail to hear them.
Comment has been collapsed.
Though I would have preferred for them to head back to the city there's nothing I can do about it now.
Thankfully, the village wasn't that far away anymore and it's coming up in the distance. The word ''village'' may be a bit of an overstatement as it looks more like a small settlement, though I'm glad to see it nonetheless.
As we approach it I thank the guards again for all they've done for me, after all I owe them our lives.
Comment has been collapsed.
The lead guard escorts you to the mayor and tells him to get you some food and prepare your lodgings. The guard leaves but you can still feel something off about him. He maybe suspicious.
Comment has been collapsed.
At least I'm safe for now, if they were certain of their suspicions they could have brought me back to the city if they wanted.
Still, I'd rather not take any chances. I'll rest for now and make sure we leave before dawn just in case they decide to come back tomorrow.
My attention goes to the sleeping baby, I was hoping to find her a home here but I don't have the time to stick around this place sadly. I'm guessing I should think of a name for her if I can't find a foster family soon.
For now, I decide to rest for what's left of the night.
Comment has been collapsed.
You sleep in the bed, the baby at your side. Your sleep is restless, racked with nightmares of the fire. Racked with guilt. You wake up, sweating. Your sudden movement wakes the baby up. She does not cry but looks at you, with mirth. She laughs at you for some reason. You hear a knock on your door.
Comment has been collapsed.
I look out of the window, the sun hasn't set yet but we should probably move out soon. I pick up the girl and cradle her, with all that's been happening I haven't been able to give her all that much attention.
whoever's at the door decides to knock again, I sigh and tell the person the door is unlocked and they can come in.
Comment has been collapsed.
A young woman enters. She's your neighbor. She asks if you're all night, that you've been mumbling and sometimes screaming through the night. The walls are thin here. She notices the baby and smiles. She asks where the mother is, assuming her to be your child.
Comment has been collapsed.
I smile and thank her for her concern, I tell her my nightmares are because of the fire that happened in the city and that I rescued the girl there. Her parents perished in the fire though so I decided I wanted to find a good home for her.
I ask her why she's up at this time, though I immediately remember it's probably because of my nightmares so I apologize.
Comment has been collapsed.
The woman understands. She saw the fire from her room, it lit up the sky. She asks what the girl's name is.
Comment has been collapsed.
I confess I don't know. I figured she would need a new name but I haven't had the time to think up a new one for her.

''Maya'' I repeat the name aloud. I look at the girl, she fell asleep during the conversation.
I look back at the woman saying ''I like it, Maya it is''
I ask the woman whether she's a local here or just passing through like me.

She tells you that she was on her way to the big city, Mitri, but she had business in the coastal villages first.

I explain to her that I'm also on the way to Mitri, passing through the coastal villages. I ask her if she wants to travel together as it's a lot safer than going alone.

She agrees though she must spend another day here before her work is complete. She has a private horse-drawn carriage though.

I thank her for the offer, but I tell her I was planning on leaving pretty early.
She understands and tells me we'll probably meet again since we're travelling the same road. She wishes me and little Maya goodnight and takes her leave.
I decide to pack my things and head downstairs. I didn't expect anyone to be up before dawn but I see the Innkeeper's wife cooking behind a fire.
I greet her.
Comment has been collapsed.
She greets you back, a little surprised to see you up at this hour. She looks around, nervously, before asking if you'd like seem beef stew. She fetches a bowl and pours you some, before you can say anything, also getting some milk for Maya. As you try to speak, she cuts off telling you that she'll be back in a second before leaving the room.
Comment has been collapsed.
I eat a few spoonfuls but I'm not very hungry at this hour and since Maya turned her head away at a second sip of milk I decide to leave the rest on the counter and grab my stuff.
I would have liked to thank her for her generosity but it's almost dawn and I want to have left the village by then just to be on the safe side.
I step out of the Inn and try to orient myself and see which paths lead out of the village.
Comment has been collapsed.
You step out of the inn. Dawn is almost about to break. You look around and see a few paths leading away. One to the market, one to the armory, one to the hospital, one to the gates, among others. But before, you can discern which path leads where, a hand is placed on your shoulder. You turn around to see the lead guard standing behind you, two guards manning his sides.
Lead Guard: "You can't leave. You're under arrest for murder of countless innocent people, murder of a city guard, impersonation of a city guard, kidnapping, and arson. You have the right...."
As he reads you your rights, one of the guards takes Maya and the other pulls out his cuffs.
Comment has been collapsed.
Gritting my teeth, I consider my options.
I'm at a loss though as I can't fight back against three armed men and fleeing is no option either as they have Maya.
They must have stayed in the village as it would have been impossible to travel back and forth from the city this fast. Something doesn't feel right however, I cannot wrap my head around why they would let me stay at the village inn and even escorted me there. If they had any suspicions they could have just arrested me to be sure.
As I'm about to speak up, both the young woman and the innkeepers's wife come out of the inn to see what the ruckus is all about.
Comment has been collapsed.
The lead guard thanks the innkeeper for reporting you. Turns out the posters were posted in the inn. The innkeeper reported you the night when you checked in. But since you were leaving early, the wife panicked and left the room to call the guards.

I am finally victorious! After slaughtering the entire enemy army single-handedly, I sit down and have a nice snack, and try to remember why I had to kill all of these men. I must have taken a blow to the head, because I just can't remember! I wrack my brain as I absently unwrap my afte-battle snack, and take a bite. I look down at the Klondike™ Bar in my hands, and it all comes flooding back to me. They tried to take it! I was travelling alone, giant flaming holy sword upon my back, travelling to the Sexy abbey, where I would become leader, when the leader of this army came upon me, and demanded my delicious Klondike™ Bar! I refused, and so they attacked! I had no choice, I couldn't just give up my Klondike™ Bar! I am ashamed of what I have done for a Klondike™ Bar.
