Maybe some error, but most likely music licences expiration. Still available on GOG, 80% off right now.

My vote is: "music licences expiration" for the reason (2K is publisher = They don`t like renew licences on old games)

I bet you're right. Jimi Hendrix, Deep Purple, Alice in Chains, etc. There's a surprising amount of licensed music in there.

Never quite liked this game, but feel like it would be common courtesy to disclose this sort of thing before doing it. Maybe there's some corporate law that prevents this, though.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, the corporate law is called profit maximization by inducing FOMO. I remember times when you could get the game for pennies on the dollar or for free and now official retailers try to dump their keys for 15 bucks+.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

This doesn't really induce FOMO though.

Comment has been collapsed.

I can see it doing so down the line, but imho this is one of those 'story games' where a no-commentary walkthrough on YouTube would suffice. Definitely biased here though.

Comment has been collapsed.

Still don't understand how a 12 year old game would cause FOMO in any type of userbase.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

People have FOMO for the silliest things in general, it's not something I try to understand but rather accept.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

But there is no logic behind this statement. FOMO exists for new and trendy assets, not easy accessible or already inexpensive items. The userbase that is driven by this for a 12 year old game (!) is so insignificant that there is no point in such a business decision.

Comment has been collapsed.

Feel like you're just taking my comment to whinge about the situation. I quite literally meant 'is there some sort of hard-coded legal stipulation to take this down ASAP instead of a clearance sale'.

Edit: Ah, another comment said there's licensed music in here. Could be the reason, but I'm now wondering if this is a permanent de-listing or if they are somehow taking out the licensed music (I'm reminded of GTA's radios losing tracks over the years) to then put it back up.

Shame it's delisted, it's a really good game. I only need to do Fubar difficulty to 100% it.

I remember doing FUBAR for the 100% and I had an absolute nightmare on the heli scene where you have to run from it. I had to try that so many times I stopped counting lol. But eventually, I did it and the rest of the game was fairly challenging, but way more possible than that particular scene for some reason.

Comment has been collapsed.

So if the music license expired and I installed the game right now would all the music be gone?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

No, when a license expire it just means they can no longer sell the game in any store officially (in this example the dev/publisher selling the game on Steam, GoG etc.).
If you've bought the game, it's yours to keep (for how long a digital license can get you that is). Nothing changes with the game, so no, the music will not be gone.

Comment has been collapsed.

How come older games like GTA San Andreas had their licensed music taken out of the game?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Publisher wanted to keep selling them, so they had two options - extend the license or cut/replace content.
For San Andreas, they wanted to sell it so they picked cheapest option.
And for Spec Ops they don't want to sell it any more, so they decided to just stop selling it.

I see thx for the explanation

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Rockstar wanted to keep selling SA, plus it had a lot of Radio stations so it wouldn't have been missed from the experience.
However, for games like Spec Ops, the music license for some of the songs can be crucial as songs are detrimental to the experience, otherwise it feels half-assed or totally missing their intended design for a scene, section etc.

It's something they have to weigh whether they want to continue selling the game for a worse experience, or remove the game entirely from being sold in official stores and get no more revenue.
Imagine playing Doom for example, and you'd turn off the music. It wouldn't feel as spectacular, would even feel boring, making you ask why you've even bought it in the first place.

Bought it years ago, played it. Honestly, it's overhyped af, generic shooter circa early 2010s with "one thing" that every youtube video about the game praises to high heaven.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I agree with you to some extent. The "one thing" would have worked way better if the game was absolutely amazing from the start, but it's painfully generic and lackluster when it's trying to be an ordinary military shooter. That undercuts a lot of what it's trying to do later on imo.

That said, it does deserve praise for even trying to execute on this concept. Doubt we'll ever see a big publisher put money behind stuff like this ever again.

I believe that was the point - make it generic so it doesn't make the war to be this "super men having fun times", then it smashes you over the head with "ohh, you really thought war is 'super men having fun times', do all those dead people make you feel like a hero", but at least in my case they went a bit too far with whole "only losers play this game, winners would just quit" meta-message.

overhyped af, generic shooter

The story, if that's what you mean by "one thing" is what the game is know for. So its kind of weird to call it overhyped. The story was and still is brilliant. The gameplay was and is generic. I don't recall the game being called masterpiece or anything for its core gameplay, but it gained its popularity due to the shocking nature of the story. Not liking it is one thing, saying its overhyped is a bit out of place.

Personally I disliked the gameplay itself. It was cumbersome and some mechanics were outright annoying. Yet due to the story I have finished the game several times.

I'm glad others realize how overhyped this game was. It was an utterly bland shooter with one gimmick - they created an ultra-violent war game that forced us to always resort to the most violent playstyle and then continually wagged their collective finger and chastised us for playing violent video games. The whole gimmick was to try and make us feel like bad people for shooting a bunch of innocent pixels while they raked in mountains of cash for making the thing in the first place. It was a tolerable enough game to ignore the smug preaching and finish but nowhere near the top of my list.

The Gamersgate version is the version for Mac.

As long as the Mac version doesn't have a separate app ID, it can be run on both. That's the case for Spec Ops: The Line (check SteamDB). Some stores just list it for each platform, so customers can easier find these. WinGameStore even created a second store page for that (MacGameStore).
