Last night there was a power cut. PC off for the night, came back in the morning, did all the preparations..
Among others smaller HDs, I had one external 2TB drive.. Plugged it in today. Bleep-bleep..shutoff..It's dead. It had all sorts of data.. Backups, Data, old game backups, TV shows that I recorded, backed-up data (images/videos) from older mobiles, a whole back-up of my oldest external HD (now re-formatted and it's actually working after non-stop 9-10 years of usage. Should've stayed with that, fecking WD. Samsung was better..) that I can't even begin to remember how much information it had on, Most of it is probably unrecoverable. Worst "IT" day of the decade for me.
Not in a good place right now..
Instead of smashing all sorts of things that I want to smash right now..have a few games for the new year..

Sorry to hear that. I have lost all of my data before in a flood and it was terrible, whole lifetime of digital hoarding of music, games, all my personal photos, wedding pictures, all old programming projects I did when I was a teenager, etc.

I would suggest to keep trying the drive. I had an external WD hard drive that would only power-on correctly about 1 out of 20 times. It would make a whirring noise then a couple of tick ticks, then stop. Once I finally got it going, hurried up and copied everything off.

If it has an external power supply you might also try replacing that, if you have another one that is compatible you can try it (be very careful that the voltage and polarity of the tip match!).

Hope 2020 goes better for you!

Thanks man.. Apparently the interface-enclosure is intact this time. Plugged it straight to the motherboard. It was my first reaction. It's the HD's board itself that's bleeping. So either the board is fried or the disk itself.I have a thought to replace the board with one from another similar HD but not sure if it's a good idea and if I can pull it off without wasting both beyond any possible recovery. I don't have the luxury to send it for professional data-recovery. Last time it happened, in 2005, they asked for 1500 $=€ so I lost another HD back then.
Than Kiou for the wishes :-D

Ah man I feel so bad for that because I experienced the same a few years ago. Memories were taken from me (Lots of photos and videos on an external drive).

if it's only circuitry that's failing, you can try to find the same hdd model and use working circuitry to recover the data. same story with seagate, took a few years to find matching model.

You need matching model an series make in this same week and year, model can have several different series with different PCB version.

This can be enclosure issue.
You can try remove HDD Drive from enclosure and connect it directly to PC via SATA

I commented above. It's the disk's board that's fried, or the disk itself. Trying to copy another similar disk (1TB though) and see if I can do anything with that PCB. Cheers..

Check if TVS Diode on HDD PCB is getting Hot, if yes this can be cheap repair.

Not sure if I can find what the TVS Diode is but in any case the disk's PCB shuts down completely after the three beeps, so no time to check if it's getting hot. Tell you the truth it was probably a bad quality drive because I noticed some noise (like a random creech-creech "search" sound but there was no disk activity) while the disk was plugged in which only stopped after it went to hibernating. Then came the power-cut and drove it sky high. I'll update after I see if I can replace the PCB..

If really important, you can try a data recover service.
Pay something in the order of 100-300€ and prey.

I answered to someone else about this, probably can't afford that..

Then keep it, maybe in some years you have extra € to afford a repair. It could make sense, when in your HD you have personal stuff like your family photos.

sorry, that is awful. Try going to your local office store and seeing if they'll take a free look and give you an estimate on the cost of repairing it?

That's not how they operate here. They would probably not even touch it if it's not from them. There's an idependent repair service in a city far away, not sure it still exists, that was absurdly expensive when I tried a long time ago. Can't afford such solution..

ouch. You could, however, find out how much it would cost for them to look at it, and if they even would.
Could you idk transplant the platters to a compatible hdd and run it that way? Others may think this a very stupid idea.

It's a nightmare losing all your data, I've lost data on 1,5TB and 2TB external drives, One of them I knocked off my desk and the other not sure why it failed but both were fairly new. Both had just been filled with my crap after taking everything from several drives (I deleted everything once I had them on the 1.5/2TB drives as they were getting on).

It's funny you say feckin' WD I've never had any problems with them at all, I have three in my recently relegated PC along with a Samsung. The drives I won't get again is Seagate, not externals any way.

I have come to the conclusion that brands are related to people! I'd go with Toshiba, Hitachi (at least the older ones), Samsung and Seagate in that order. I have a couple more WD and I think I had the most trouble with them. Usually I'm referring to external drives. Maybe they're jinxed for me like that older brand, Maxtor, did (internals that one). Although to be fair it's mostly the enclosure, up to now, that failed. But I had to swear at the broken one, and it was a WD. This time it wasn't the enclosure though.

PS. The one which lasted 9-10 years (that's from actual disk date, hours online) is a Samsung though. The enclosure only failed last year and now it's mounted as internal.

Due to consolidation in the HDD industry there are really only 3 HDD manufacturers now: WD, Seagate, Toshiba.

Any Maxtor after 2006 and Samsung HDD made after 2011 are really just Seagate with a different logo on it.

IBM sold their HDD division (Deskstar/Travelstar etc.) to Hitatchi in 2002, which Hitatchi named HGST, and then Hitatchi sold HGST to WD in 2012, but due to government regulations WD were forced to sell the 3.5" hard drive division of HGST to Toshiba. So now the 2.5" Hitatchi/HGST drives are made by WD and the 3.5" are made by Toshiba.

I have some ancient pre-Seagate 500GB Samsung 3.5" hard drives that have been going in a RAID backup server for 10+ years with no failures or bad sectors yet. Amazing...

Heh, yep that's the deal now. My observation was about how it was a few years back. Still remember my excellent Deskstar, lasted for ages, IBM original. Although I admit I didn't know about Samsung, I thought they were still the manufacturers. In any case, that's my longest survivor. On a side note, it was a FAT32 until recently.

it happened to me too, when I was younger. I had LOTS of important things there, ICQ,napster (if i remember well?) chats with friends I don't see for 10-15 years so far, so many images, lots of music collected that now it's even impossible to find on youtube, stupid videos.. and oh, so many floppy disk backups of almost every single nes and snes game ever created =P roms and whatsoever, japanese-english fan translations of the pokemon games.. well, I use EASEUS recovery data to get back things from hard disks and such nowadays but back then (before 2000 I think?) it was a huge mess that destroyed my whole PC and I was still a teenager.. I can totally relate and I still think back to all those things.. there was no wifi or amazon or whatever else so you had to rely on what you could find in your town, at least here, so I didn't have laptops or backups.. =\ I wish you the best, keep a program like easeus data recovery which is awesome even for raw disks and happy holidays again.. =)

That was my experience indeed around 2005. Lost all my emails up to that year (about 10 years), tons of photos/videos, etc etc.. Still remember it from time to time..
I have recovery software here and there in other cases, which I used now and again for other people when it was a different issue. Hardware fails are much more painful..

I lost everything once, due to a power failure while my pc was writing info. After that experience, I invested in a battery backup. That saved me earlier this week while I was playing Payday 2, we had a power failure. I was able to back out of the game, and shut the pc down. Right after the pc was shut down, the power came back on. I started up the pc again, got back in the game and power failed again! Such a pain but I love this battery backup.

Not sure if a battery backup would've helped in your situation. Really sucks to lose everything. :(

Used to have a battery but it failed as well and got me angry to not use them again. I've had several power failures after that and never lost a hard disk. It was probably a combination of bad hardware and that extra spike. In fact I wanted to compliment that disk in this year.. didn't get to it in time..

Thank you for the end of last year.

Has the data on the hard disk gone?
In the past, IBM and Seagate's hard disks broke down and shed tears of blood.
There are various ways of breaking.
However, when it comes to data recovery, one option would be to send the data to a specialized contractor as little as possible after the disappearance. (High / time consuming)

If you do not make that choice.
Such tools exist.
However, if the hard disk is recognized by UEFI / BIOS, it can be used, otherwise it will be difficult for ordinary people to do.

Heh, hope you enjoy it! Not enough resources for prof. recovery. I'll try and see if I can do some "hacking" with an old similar disk, although at this point I'm getting prepared that it's all gone. Just hasn't sunk in yet..
Hoping for a better direction in this year for sure.. Cheers and right back at you!

Wanted to try your puzzle but didn't take part because of the tools "block". Not that I was blocked, I just never logged in, not fond of them and at this point I don't think I'll bother with it. Something-something..personal info.. too many sites to log etc..
