So Blizzard just anounced that Overwatch will not be F2P and you will have to pay $40 for the normal and $60 for the Origins Edition.

Is this a bad move from them or people will still throw money at them?

Take my money

As much as I may be considered Blizzard Fanboy, I will not be buying this one. but hey - I would not be playing much of it if it was F2P anyway - not a big fan of competitive online shooters, so I'll just wait for them to announce Warcraft 4 or new D3 expansion ;) and keep playing HS in the meantime :>

$40 is just too much for not getting all the content

Blizzard will never get a single penny from me -.-
I got disapointed in them with WoD expansion , that was just too much ....
I liked how they called patch 6.1 as new content but added only S.E.L.F.I.E camera....

Am I the only one a bit interested in what the player community will be like. One of the worst parts of the f2p model is multiple account's and less of a drawback in losing an account you spent no money will always have significantly more trolls/hackers etc. not that I will spend that much, just interested X)

The price is too high; however I really do not understand how some people feel entitled to receive MP games for free nowadays. Whether it is good decision on the Blizz's side only time will show. Also am enjoying how some people are saying that Diablo that had sold like 10 million copies in it's first year (not sure here, correct me if I am wrong) was a failure (it's launch, on the other hand, certainly was a fail).

Diablo 3 was a big fail to the gamers, not as sales.... And no I don't mind paying 20 bucks for this game but for me in EU is even worse in price...and I wouldn't mention the GBP & RU prices ;)

I personally did like Diablo 3 thou, but everyone has a different taste. As for EU prices, I am living in cetral Europe so we are on a same boat, unless you live in Western Europe which would mean that your average income is 3 times higher than mine while the prices are the same.

Anyway, if you do not want to pay 40, you do not need to. I won't be getting it for 40 either unless it really impresses me in beta.

It's not about feeling entitled to get free MP games, but wondering why would they pay something that is more or less Team Fortress 2 with some changes? If you make a MOBA today, then unless it's free, you need to have a damn good reason to tell people to pay for it, since they can find dozens of others for free.

Multiplayer games need community, and new entries to market have really really hard time. So long term viability of pay-to-play is questionable. Just well does new franchises do right now?

Apart from Destiny and its gods-knows-how-many dozens of millions of dollars spent on marketing and buying that GOTY award despite the terrible reception and reviews?
Not too hot. As I hear, many of the MOBA/MMO fans are slowly migrating to mobile, especially in Korea, which was one of the largest markets for these.

I would say that as far as MP only games go, there are two main factions - 80% of players who are not investing a single cent, 15% who ocassionaly spend few dollars and 5% who over years spend hundreds of dollars. I believe that each of the 20% of paying customers must appreciate the fixed price model since they won't be sponsoring the game for the majority of the players while the rest is obviously going to whine.

Now it all depends on whether Overwatch is good enough to persuade at least half of these whiners to actually buy the game, if it does, it is good to go and it can always switch to F2P model in a couple of years when the sales won't reach the costs of keeping the servers up anymore.

TF2 is indeed a great game; However at the end of the day it is 6 years old and won't really be attracting that many more new players while the old ones will be either growing out of gaming or finding other games, so I would not say that the market of this kind of shooters is that saturated (and I do not think CS:GO, CoD or Battlefield really fit into the same category as Overwatch and TF2) and even if there are more games of this kind, there are no big companies behind those to be able to fight the Blizz hype.

TF2 came out in 2007. So its 8 years old; not 6.

I would rather that I just paid a fee and got everything than had to faff around buying seperate heroes and stuff... When did people have an issue for actually paying for games?

Since there is a major competitive game that seems very similar and is free. And you don't have to faff around buying different characters either.

I am not saying Overwatch will be an unworthy game. It might be an awesome game well worth the price. What most people find weird is that its competing against a free game with a massive playerbase without really bringing majorly new improved stuff to the table. It is different, but not clearly better than TF2.

I never considered myself any support of Blizzard. They make good games, but they are like absolutely outsode of my main genres - and they cost an arm and a leg, and will cost it for years. (Diablo 2 still costs as much as a "normal" AAA game from last year, on a sale. (7+€ in every hungarian store, still) - maybe it's worth for the fanboys / RTS lovers (SC2 in this example), but from my perspective they ask for waay too much for something I'm not intrested enough to pay that price. And this haven't changed with D3, Heartstone, Heroes of the Storm, and won't with Overwatch. Blizzard is just too good at reinventing already existing things and selling in under their name and pose as the messiah of gaming. (Though whatever they "reinvent", they do at a top-notch quality, so at least they are getting away with these borrowsed ideas)
