Hello. Two days ago I bought Skyrim from them and wanted to give it to my friend from India, but he got region lock message. I'm from Estonia (EU) and there wasn't anything about region lock written there. Now when I want my money back, ROW key or any help, they just send me copy-paste messages. When I started using GMG, it was best CD-Key selling site. Now it isn't, in my opinion.

It's gone downhill since playfire, but their keys shouldn't be region locked. :o

Their keys aren't region locked. Who decides if it's region locked or not is the publisher (not even the studio). They are a simple distributor/retailer for the whole world.

Apparently they provide keys for the region that it was purchased. I didn't know they had anything in stock besides US and UK copies.

So you bought it from Estonia and wanted to give it to someone in a completely different region (India). How is that their fault? They sold it to a buyer in Estonia, not India.

Also, if you did some research you might have seen that titles from Bethesda often have keys for different regions....

Yea, it's my and their fault. My fault because I wanted to give it to my friend from India, theirs because they didn't inform me about region lock.

I disagree. You are in Estonia and they sold you a working key that was appropriate for your region. Could they have more information about regional locks on their product pages? Maybe, assuming that all publishers are fully transparent about that sort of thing. The only store that seems to do so is Nuuvem, since they don't have different storefronts for different regions.

Even Steam tells me when some game is Ru-Cis. I would be pretty happy if they would put EU after the game name.

It's his fault, but GMG is less than helpful when it comes to product descriptions. I've had multiple issues due to their less-than-forthcoming disclosure practices since I began using them.

they gave YOU a working key because YOU bought it, it doesnt matter if you give it away or not, you are the customer and the key works in your region...

If you are doing business in EU, you must follow the rules of EU. In this case GMG should/must have had a notice there about region restrictions (there are even regional restriction for games inside the EU).

right, its his fault they didn't tell him what he was actually buying. 9_9

its like selling a used car without disclosing how you converted the engine to run vodka and oliveoil

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Their terms and condition clearly states that all purchases are for your personal use. They provided him with a key that met this requirement and could be activated from his location.

To keep with your analogy, it's like buying a car from a lot with a great big sings saying "Our cars only run on vodka and olive oil" then complaining about the car not working when you put Kool-Aid in the tank.

Must have changed since they grew. My only contact with their support was two years ago or so. I bought The Last Remnant and it was marked another 10 or 20% off the next day. I asked for a refund of the difference and they gave it to me the next day.

What? Their support is crap, they aren't helpful at all...

Shame most sites don't take an example of Amazon, their support is just amazing in every way.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Amazon can do what they do because they are so huge. That's why they're very quick to take care of a customer's needs. Smaller niche stores almost have to have stricter policies in place in respect to returns b/c they lose more money. IE if GMG buys 1000 keys of a particular game, Amazon probably buys 10000.

I'm not at all apologizing or making excuses for GMG or any retailer in this respect, its just Amazon can afford to "take the hit" more than other shops.

Steam is huge too compared to GMG but their support is a POS too. It's not a valid reason imo, the smaller ones need their customers even more, now I just use GMG for Playfire credits and never spend a dime on them again. Good thing i got 120$ out of it before it turned into shit.

Most likely they sold you a key for Skyrim (Digital Dist) package, which has restricions applied. I believe selling this key without informing you about the restrictions may violate eu consumer law, so keep chatting with them. You might also want to contact your local Consumer Complaints Board.

That "US" in the url bar might make a difference on what type of key you get. If i disable VPN, I get a CN listed, but can still purchase.

sorry dude but i feel it is your fault... should have done some looking into it first, at least send CS a email asking if or seeing if it is possible to gift a copy to another region in fear of region locked keys. you bought the key in EU and you got what you paid for, a working key for EU. I dont think a refund is in order because you did get what you paid for. It is similar to this, if i buy a Nissan Skyline here in the Philippines as a gift for a friend in the US, is it Nissan's fault they didnt tell me the car is illegal in the US and give me a refund? No, i got what i paid for. extreme example but it is the same argument.

They didn't tell me that it's region locked to EU. They tell it for some games, like their Inversion is Inversion (EU). Then why should I contact support if the game page sais nothing about region lock?

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

I believe on this page when OP bought skyrim doesn't have any information about region lock or restriction code...

So, if I will buy some games on deal... did i must contact support to asking that games was region lock or not & waiting support reply until deals ended ?

Well, at least nissan will confirm first to buyer about region buy for that car.

In many parts of the world, it is illegal to sell something without clearly stating any restrictions that have been placed upon it (particularly if those restrictions involve the law). To knowingly not inform the customer that they will be denied a common, expected use of the item falls under many a country's consumer protection laws, including but not limited to false advertising if they sought to hide the information in order to sell more copies to unsuspecting customers.

You example is wrong. He bought a digital copy, while Nissan Skyline is, as far as I know, a physical one.
A digital copy can be moved and transferred from place to place much easier, and therefore, and due to the EU law, they should have informed him about the region restrictions.

This is not the first time GMG scammed someone with their region locked shit.

They don't inform you in advance where a game would and wouldn't work and they won't refund the money to you. That's why I stop patronizing those scammers.

I don't think this counts as "scam", since the OP got exactly what he paid for.

They didn't inform the OP about the region lock, but the OP didn't inform THEM about his intentions to give it to someone... So hard to tell whose fault this is, really.

Your view on this is completely not coherent with EU law fyi. Please read something prior to posting something like this...

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

How is it "not coherent"?
As far as I am concerned, scam is something where one party promise to deliver something to the other party, but then deliberately fails to deliver it. Sounds pretty "coherent" to me ;)

As for the region lock, well I don't know if there are any laws in EU regarding this, so take it as just my opinion ;)

Comment has been collapsed.

Yes, they've been pretty bad, such as having people buy what to all appearances were blank keys and worked as blank keys in closed beta, but that turned out to actually be region locked as soon as open beta started.

And it won't be long before they get sued, if they keep this act up. International barriers won't protect them forever, particularly if they're going to be doing business in places with strong consumer protection laws, like the EU.

Totally with OP. Region lock should be advertised before payment.
I also have a very bad opinion about GMG and its unfair euro conversion (they are aware of regions in this case). Playfire is probably the start of the end, as someone said.

I dont think that is the OP's fault, i mean YES he bought a key working for his region but as far as i know not enough information is scam and we are looking for a case were the OP want to gift the game with NO warning about region locks BUT if we were talking about a giveaway and the winner could not activate it because it is blocked? in that case probably everyone would agree with OP, just saying...

Some of you said that it is against the law. I did some searching and fount out that it is. Here is what the law sais:

Wherever you buy a product or service in the EU, whether in a shop or online, the trader must provide you with certain clear, correct and understandable key information about the product or service before you make the purchase.

It's not. The law state that they have to provide correct and understandable key information about the product. The ToS that you agree to when registering clearly state that the games you purchase are for your own personal use. The key that was provided meet this requirement.

That doesn't relieve GMG of their duty (imposed by law) to inform the customer about the key information and elements of the product he is about to buy. They didn't do that, plain and simple. And it doesn't really matter if they state otherwise in their ToS.

The 2/3/4 packs are the only case the offer keys to be shared, as stated in all pages where they offer it.

HB/IG started doing it to reduce the spread of gifting bundles games (which is illegal by the TOS you accept when you buy it) to 3rd party. You can gift an entire bundle, not one single game

And last, there's no such thing as internet laws. Personal use is for you to use, not to give away. :P
