Random question. I was watching this TV Show called Lucifer and wondered if someone would actually trade/sell your soul to the devil?

well practically your soul is the thing going to heaven , if you sell it , how can you go to heaven:D so game's still on!

Yeah, I like Jack2's thought: it would be like 'The Merchant of Venice', you'd be entitled to an eternity in heaven which you could never collect. Perhaps you could get around this by stipulating more precisely though.

It's more that you would get to spend eternity in Heaven... as an observer with no will or physical presence of your own, because your soul is elsewhere, and no longer your own. Besides, the devil wouldn't be able to provide that, given it's the only thing beyond his domain or somesuch.

Some people really need to train on a beginners Monkeypaw wish system before they graduate to devil exchanges. \:3/

Mhh, he sells his soul in exchange for an eternity in heaven. That would imply that the new owner needs to either send the soul and lose it or move to heaven... the devil moves hell to heaven and the problem is fixed... or completelly broken.

I did. I was born American and the devil is Uncle Sam.

But to answer your question... If I wasn't sh*tting my pants in fear, I'd think about it.
The day I believe in the Devil is the day I start having FAITH (true belief) in God.
That would change things a lot, prior to making a deal.
So I voted Thinking or ......

I can't: Seeing I don't believe the Devil, Lucifer, Hades or whoever exists in the first place, it's impossible for me to sell my soul to a deity I'm convinced doesn't exist ;)

Actually, I have bigger plans.

  1. Sell soul to the devil
  2. Go to hell
  3. Regain Dragon powers
  4. Become Drakodemonica, the Demonic Dragon
  5. Turn suffering souls into my minions
  6. Overrun the Devil and take his place as the one and only true Master Of Evil
  7. Turn hell into a neverending party
  8. Change name to Drakodemonica, the Party Dragon

How do you know that Hell isn't already never ending party? I mean it could be all propaganda by that God guy, after all he is murderous schizophrenic... This Devil guy might be really nice person and offer lot of fun times in afterlife, instead that praising of god to eternity in heaven...

That really depends on if you think the Devil exist in the first place....

Though for the sake of the question..i think we all have at one point sold our soul to the "devil"

Again that all depends on how you look at things...i see trading something with devil as in doing business with someone that is up to no good..

For example....buying drugs...you are buying from someone who sells poison to others

but i do not think the devil actual exist so there for i do not think you can trade/sell with something/someone that does not exist...

i do leave you with this though....what if you have no soul, then what do you trade??

P.S. where is the option for no because it does not exist?

In discussions of soul selling I've seen, I get the impression that most 'yes' answers are given by people importing their disbelief in souls into the scenario. But I'm curious, is there anybody who would answer 'yes' if they really believed they had an immortal soul (to which their identity and consciousness was tied)? What would the reasoning behind this answer be? Payment for the loss of nothing is one thing, payment for the right to dispose of your consciousness in perpetuity is another.

(I know a lot of answers aren't in earnest. But hey, ask an interesting question, maybe you get an interesting answer...)

To me, the simple utility calculus seems hard to get around: if possession of your soul determines your experience for an infinite period, then significant differences in the quality of that experience would be worth more than any temporal payment. So the only scenario in which one should take a payment from the devil would be one in which one thought the Devil's custodianship of your soul would lead to an eternal experience for you on par with available alternatives. (Or possibly one in which a finite payment could outweigh infinite suffering. But when I try to envision one I come up short.)

I haven't watched the show beyond the two first eps, but this is his statement from The Sandman: Season of Mists when he abandons Hell.

They die, and they come here – having transgressed against what they believed to be right – and expect us to fulfill their desire for pain and retribution. I don’t make them come here… I need no souls. And how can anyone own a soul? No, they belong to themselves. They just hate to have to face up to it.

Let's say that your identity is tied to your soul (so a body can only be yours by bearing some connection to your soul) and that through interaction with it, and only through such interaction, do you have subjective experience. What say you then?

Not so familiar with the contract details of soul selling. What is the supposed implication (if any) on this life?

Yeah, sure, there's no harm in trying.
I can sell my soul, my Ki Mickey hoho so funny, my Cosmos, my mana, whatever you want, to devils, the only god, multiple gods, Cthulhu, masters of the Matrix, whatever you want. Even for free I can do that. It's just words.
