Hi!
So I started playing asphalt 8 airborne on my tablet and I realised I quite like it. So I would like a simular racing game on my pc.
A game that also has multiplayer is preferred. I tried grid 2 but I didn't enjoy it that much.

So could anybody recommend a good racing game?
Thank you in advance.

Is the first GRID better than the second one? Or did i just have a bad first impression with GRID 2?

Yes it is. It's a thousand times better than GRID 2. I remember playing it back i '08 and '09 non-stop.
GRID 2 sadly just did not deliver.

RACE series is good, and quite realistic, but you need a bunch of the expansions to get a good car selection.

GRID series is good (as well as DiRT, from the same publisher) however the first GRID is the best... others seem muddy and have wonky physics in comparison. As with a lot of games, the computer is a cheating whore when it comes to collisions. Drift mode in GRID is a lot of fun.

If you are just looking for something fun to kill a lot of time and aren't overly concerned about realism or actually racing other people, check out Trackmania series. There is a free version of it on Steam that has about 100 tracks you can play. Trackmania is mostly Time attack style racing, and focuses a lot on unrealistic but very fun stunt tracks. Think old school Excitebike with F1 cars. Trackmania Nations Forever is the name of the free one. Very worth downloading.

Thank you for your advice. I guess I will try the first GRID. Which one of the trackmania series do you like best?

Has anybody tried the flatout series? or burnout paradise?

Another series you could try if you're not worried about things like brakes and damage is the Ford Racing series on sale on Steam atm I think...well, FR3, FR Offroad and one other FR that I forget are on sale anyway...and the reviews almost all say they're good, from memory

This games are being published by Strategy First, they might not work on some pc´s and playing in higher resolutions is probably not an option.
i haven't checked steam yet, but the whole bundle is being sold on their site for $2.24

Check out the free trackmania nations forever first... if you like that style of play, then I would buy the complete pack for $60... has the full version of the first trackmania, plus all 3 of the settings of trackmania 2.

If I understand well, you have TM Canyon in your library then... That's my favorite racing game, mainly on fullspeed servers. Tracks can be really hard, sometimes you won't even be able to see the finish line (for the most unforgiving ones), but I had very much fun with this game.

I've played GRID, burnout paradise and NFS: hot pursuit and enjoyed them all. They're all fun but different in their own ways.

FlatOut 1 and 2 are great. But they're pure arcade racers, no simulators.
FlatOut: Ultimate Carnage is a "remake" of FlatOut 2, but uses GfWL, so i wouldn't recommend it.
And the 3rd installment is utter garbage, made by a different studio from a different publisher. Forget it even exists.

The developers of the original FlatOut have their new game "Next Car Game: Wreckfest" available for purchase as an Early Access title atm.

I've played every Flatout game except the last one FO3. And I've had so much fun 1,2 and Ultimate Carnage both alone and in multiplayer. Especially in multiplayer. If you can gather some friends you're gonna have a blast.

You should also check out Burnout Paradise. It's an older game but man it is fun. I've played it again last year and there are still people playing it in MP.

Then you have Need For Speed series. I've played most of them, from Hot Pursuit 2 (2002) all the way though Most Wanted (2012). They're all fun in their own way.

Underground 1 and 2, Most Wanted 2005 and Carbon are great when it comes to street racing and customization. Lots of people will say that Most Wanted 2005 is the best one and I can see why, but for me it's all about Carbon and canyon drifts.

ProStreet, Undercover and Most Wanted 2012 weren't all that great, but still OK. The Run is all about one huge race (which you can complete in a couple of hours). Shift 1 and 2 are pretty good simulation games if you're into that (I personally am not). World is an MMO like game so it's a pass.

Hot Pursuit 2 (2002) was an awesome game where you play either as a racer or a cop in separate missions if I remember correctly. Hot Pursuit 2010 is similar only here you can race in an open world environment. Quite enjoyable and fun.

Also Dirt series that was mentioned above is very, very good. Personal favorite Dirt 2.

You might also want to check you Split Second and Blur as both are pretty good racing games.

So yeah, I've played a lot of racing games over the years and I'm sure that if you pick up any of the games above (except maybe ProStreet and Undercover) you're gonna have a blast. Also if you have a wheel it'll be even better. Of course wheel is better for simulations games but even these ones I mentioned are more enjoyable with it.

EDIT: I don't know how I forgot but Test Drive Unlimited is a game that every racing fan must play. TDU2 is also good, but TDU 1 is miles better. Huge island of Hawaii with lots of asphalt and off road paths, huge selection of cars, varied mission. Man it's amazing :D Also I just remembered Juiced 2 Hot Import Nights. It's got great drift races and cool maps.

Thxs, I'll have a look at burnout paradise too as I have it on origin. Yeh I might see if I can get a wheel. That's what I like about asphalt on the tablet, so you use the tablet as wheel, but a real stearing wheel would probably be even better.

I got a Formula Force EX couple of years ago for around 30€ and it's more than enough for these types of games. Of course for simulation games you'd need a better wheel like G27 but since it's too expensive you might as well go for a cheaper one.

Yeh I already had a quick look for a cheap decent stearing wheel. I found the SPEEDLINK SL-6684-SBK for 30 euros and it has good reviews. I am indeed not going to buy one of them expensive ones for more than a 100 euros. 30 seems like a good price to me :)

I don't think most people here understand what a sim is. =P

If you're looking for a serious racing sim, with serious racers, you really need to check out iRacing. I started playing it about a couple weeks ago and I have to say, it's fantastic. Now, you'll have to purchase most of the content (and earn a 'license' level to race most as well) but the great thing about that is you can buy just the series/tracks that you're interested in. (I'm still going with the basic stuff that you get with your membership).

There are multiple series, like oval Stock Cars to NASCAR racing, and road racing in a Mazda MX-5 up to Formula One goodness. It's the most intense real racing that you'll come across (outside of the real world, anyway). I'm not even exaggerating. =P

The game has been added to Steam just recently, but do not get it there as you can get better deals right from the official site itself (You won't get a Steam key, though).

Honestly, I recommend the $10 offer, as cars and tracks typically cost $12-$15 each, and 3 months for a first time sign up is normally $15, so you're getting a really good deal from the start.

If you want to read more about the game, check out the discussions on Steam to get a better idea of what you can expect.

Now, I don't want to scare you away from the game, but it is difficult, especially if you've never played a sim before. You'll NEED to practice each track numerous times, every single race week (each week a different track is chosen for each racing series). You'll NEED to practice racing side-by-side of other racers, and how to avoid their mistakes, and how to make less of them yourself. You'll basically need to re-learn racing, and learn it in a realistic sense, before you even join an official race. That's what I recommend, anyway. But, even with the difficulty, and all the practicing, it's still a lot of fun, and it's really rewarding when you notice your lap times getting better and better. And once you get on the track in an official race.. It gets intense.

If you (or heck, anybody here that see's this) decide to give it a go for a few months or whatever, go ahead and add me on iRacing, and even on Steam if you want. Just let me know who you are. =)

I'm no pro and still have a long way to go myself, but I'll do what I can to help out, if anybody were to need it. Or, if anyone just wants a practice buddy on the track, that would be cool with me, too.

OP asked for a similar racing game to Asphalt 8. He didn't ask for a sim vs an arcadey game.

Ah, my bad. I read it quickly, and read "simular" as simulator. =P

Still, I do recommend the game as it's really good. For multiplayer racing, it doesn't get any better.

I don't know Asphalt 8, but just a looked at a video of it. Some of jumps etc. reminded me of a game I've been playing on Steam lately called Distance although graphically it's very different indeed.

There's also Nitronic Rush from the same people which you can dowlnoad for free.

Neither is pure driving as there's a little flying in each.

Thxs everybody for your comments. I will try burnout paradise, trackmania, flatout 1 or 2 and dirt 1 as I already have them. One of them must be at least fun for me I hope.

And I'll be on the look out for the others for if they come one sale.

It's already been mentioned, but I think Burnout Paradise is probably the most similar in racing style to Asphalt 8: Airborne, as both are arcade racers with an emphasis on tricks on such. If you like Burnout Paradise though, I'd high recommend you branch out a bit and try Driver San Francisco. Both Driver and Burnout are open world games, but Driver San Francisco gives unparalleled freedom, and coupled with the unique theme it's lots of fun. You can read my full opinions in my review if you want more information.

I could recommend you SImBin. They made racing games like GTR, GTR2, GT Legends, Race07.... all these games are little older but very realistic. besides you can find online communities that make online competitions till now. (for example www.weissbierbude.com for Race 07)

And once again, I'll recommend Split/Second.
It's an arcade racer very much like Burnout. Main difference is that the power bar you build up isn't used to boost your speed, it's used to BLOW SHIT UP! Michael Bay style, potentially re-routing the track you're on in the process.
