And it's gorgeous!

The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance | Teaser | Netflix

I must admit I was pretty skeptical since they've started talking about it because Netflix hasn't been on top lately and it didn't feel like they had the stuff to do it right but this looks amazing. The way they managed to keep the atmosphere and look of the movie but expand the settings and dynamics with modern technology... just looks real good.

Am I the only one who thinks that would make an excellent game?

Release date: August 30th. Now if that's not the best reason to come back from vacation, I don't know what is!

Edit: If you haven't seen the original 1982 movie, do yourself a favor and check it out!
You can watch it on Netflix or Amazon Prime Video (thanks VEF215)

Edit 2: Wow. The Gaming Gods heard me! Upcoming RPG on Steam

That's why I was surprised. I was expecting a full-on 3D animated extravaganza that could never have captured the magic of the movie.
Pleasantly surprised and very excited now.

I guess I will finally consider subscribing to Netflix in August. o.O

It's unbelievable how close to the movie this all looks. I'm stumped. Never thought in this day and age paying due respect to the work of love such as The Dark Crstal would have been possible. Yet here we are. Puppets still look like puppets and that's a good thing.

Thank you for haring, Fluffster! Had no idea this was in the making. I'm a big fan.

I know, right?? I really didn't expect that. They started talking about it years ago and I thought they just took time because they were assembling a big cast but damn, that looks so faithful to the Henson magic, I'm gob-smacked!

Now let's see what they do with the story because prequels are always tricky, as they have to itch closer to where the movie takes over but they can't go all dark and hopeless, which is pretty much where we start in the movie. Still, with the way they treated the world of the movie, I am expecting them to have treated the story well too.

Oh and if you like puppets, you should definitely check out the movie Strings
It's also a fantasy story, with beautiful direction and puppetry, quite dark and the fact they're puppets is actually written into the story.
And I don't mean in a "behind the scenes" kind of way. The characters actually die when their head string is cut. It's pretty well done.

Exactly! You can tell just from the trailer they had a lot of love for the original and they did their best to keep the magic alive.

I've never heard of this before but I have to admit it doesn't look terrible.

Jim Henson... That's the guy who created the Muppets, right? Or was it Sesame Street?

Both, actually ;)

And The Fraggles. As well as The Labyrinth movie's puppets featuring David Bowie. And several Star Wars characters like Yoda, Jabba the Hutt, and the Ewoks.

Good for you then. I have no childhood nostalgia for this and it takes a little more than a 2 minutes trailer to colour me impressed. Also Netflix is doing 600 original shows this year alone so what's so surprising they bought this?

Actually, looks like old Yoda.

There's a good reason for it. Jim Henson, the master who created all the creatures in (and co-directed) the original movie, also helped build and design Yoda. He is also the guy who created the Muppets.

Amazing news indeed. This looks like a work of love, which is undeniably needed if they want to revive the original masterpiece.

Easily one of the most lushful and gorgeous fantasy worlds ever to be written in ink, this is something no fantasy fan should even consider missing out. And a good opportunity for people to check out the original "gem" of a film which is decades ahead of its time despite its minor pitfalls. It's not just puppetry at its very best, its what any fantasy world creator should always strive for in any kind of medium.

Jim Henson Company, you meticulous master crafters, I'm counting on you once again to deliver something beyond beautiful and intriguing.

Uhm, you do realize that this is not about the movie? They apparently made some kind of series out of the Dark Chrystal universe.

Edit: Or maybe a new movie/prequel? Can't quite make it out yet.
Edit 2: it indeed looks like it's going to be a series, on Netflix a "Season 1" tag is mentioned ;)

yes but its still dark crystal. i should really consider watching the movie again maybe i'll like it again as i did as a kid. got 1 copy from when i was given it as a kid then 1 copy for a charity shop that i was given because apparently it looked like something i would like

i feel like it would be a movie more then a show but who knows with netflix I'm sure they would figure out how to turn it into a show that forces people to wait a year before the next season. Or as you just edited season 1 guess they are making a show of it guess I'll give it a go and see whats it like

Netflix mentions "Season 1", so yeah, looks like it's going to be a series. I'm happy about it. Loved the movie as a kid, still love it today and occasionally re-watch it when I need a fix of magic in my life. I think it's a one-of-a-kind masterpiece and I'm pretty hyped for that new thing Netflix is doing. It even looks like they caught the vibe of it, which is stunning to me, considering we're living in superficial 2019 :)

Oh well I hope its good. I remember it was the 1st movie to make me cry as a kid, I was completely heartless up until that point. I also remember that dinner scene and how I would eat some of my sweets like they eat. I tried watching it I dont even know how long ago but I got half way then stopped so screw it when it comes out I'll rewatch the movie then try the series

Yes it's a prequel series. I think it was conceived as 10 episodes so I don't know if they are really thinking about stretching it over several seasons. Maybe they'll do other stories in the same universe if it's a success but there will be years in between seasons in any case.

I'm fine with it, that's going to be another thing to watch on Netflix.
I just hope no one will ever remake the Labyrinth movie or think about doing a series based on it... I usually hate when "Hollywood" decides to remake my favorite childhood movies. The 2010 version of Clash of the Titans was bad and the Medusa scene, terrible.

Aww man, they broke my heart with the Clash of the Titans! The original movie, in all its cheesiness, was so so much better, not in a small way thanks to Harryhausen's work.
So yeah I'm surprised too that they didn't opt for the easy way out and do it in CG. As it is, it seems to retain the magic of the original world and Javier Grillo-Marxuach being at the helm somewhat reassures me about the story.

I do have the DVD of the original, it's such a great flick... the Medusa scene was my favorite thing from the movie, by far. Slow and tensed, it was perfect. The remake was just fast CGI-infused pursuit. And Medusa was "good-looking" from above the waist. WTF!? That was the total opposite. I mean... stop motion animation is a work of art and heart. It might look cheesy to the "kids" these days, but damn... the feeling you get from it is so not the same than what CGI usually offers.

the only thing is... honestly, I would have preferred if Medusa had been way taller. It would just have been more intimidating to Perseus. She looked about the same height.

Or maybe I'm just getting really old. And nostalgic. ;)
In which case, I'm just going to check out again the 1981 battle.

Well, we both are then (which doesn't mean it's all in our heads lol)
I mean CGI can be awesome and very well done but most of the time, in animation, it's just a shortcut for quick and dirty animation with no texture, no atmosphere, no magic. Ray Harryhausen was a genius and he brought a charm to everything he touched that just couldn't be replicated in CGI.

Old, campy Clash of the Titans for me too. It's too bad that stop motion has become a lost art. I miss it - it just seems to have more heart. Maybe it's all the painstaking work that goes into it. I've seen every Kong movie you could think of, but it's still the original Kong that I like the best and that gets an emotional reaction from me.

The love really does make all the difference, doesn't it? So many movies now are just business and you can tell. They have no heart. It's hard to get people to put that much time and love into a movie that has no heart. So yeah that makes a big difference, in the end product, for sure.

Same. The more "realistic" the creature got, the less genuine the emotion was.

I've really been looking forward to this since they announced it 2 years ago. A throwback to my childhood, why not? Okay, I wouldn't have seen it when it first came out, but I would have seen it on TV during the late 80s. To be honest, I wasn't sure what to expect and I'm definitely impressed having watched the trailer. It looks gorgeous.

I was very skeptical despite liking the previous work of the showrunner because however good the story may be, if you don't have the magic, it just won't be as good as the first one. And it seems like they are indeed committed to the world of The Dark Crystal and to recreating the look and feel, no matter how easier they could have had it in CGI.

My only regret is that it won't get on the big screen. My parents wouldn't let me watch the film at the movies because it "seemed very dark" (and indeed it was!) but my grandfather took me and my sister anyway and I can still remember how amazing it looked back then so I can't imagine how it would look now, on much bigger screens in HD.

I'm not old enough to have had that opportunity. :( I remember it being on TV when I was about 4 or 5 and my Dad saying "come on, this will give you nightmares." lol. I was allowed watch it when I was a little older though.

The Labyrinth terrified me, but The Dark Crystal didn't. lol.

Haha same here. I was aware of how dark the movie was but my grandfather was a big believer in talking things through and in the power of storytelling so we did talk about the light and the dark in the movie after and to be honest, it doesn't have "scary" moments, just some undertones of darkness. Not like Labyrinth.

Also, yeah I'm that old! lol

Haha!

I actually had nightmares about David Bowie on a bunch of overlapping stairs and him running on them upside-down like in the movie, except he was trying to get me. I honestly didn't watch that movie again til I was an adult. I love it now, but I was very traumatised by it when I was little. Hahaha!

My parents were worried about how dark it was so I wasn't allowed to see it in theatres. Thankfully I had a grandfather who didn't mind parents instructions and believed in the power of storytelling... and of talking things through later to prevent any PTSD lol

You and me both! I'm very relieved by how it looks but it won't be really good if it's only gorgeous and the story disappoints. I am hopeful as the showrunner is a true geek and I've liked his previous work so I'll stay excited and hope they don't prove me wrong

Yeah I couldn't find it either when I looked in France and my girlfriend has an account in Portugal and it's not there either so maybe it's not on in Europe.
