Can you use Visa or similar type gift cards to buy games through steam? It might sound stupid but i would like to know.

I think they're just prepaid cards, so they should work.
Just activate them online and buy stuff like you would with a normal card.

I've tried the vista one a year or 2 ago and it didn't work. maybe they do now though? or maybe it was because it was a vista based card for the local mall(who said it works online wherever vista is accepted which was a bald faced lie. it only worked on GOG)

They might need a phone call in order to be linked to your address before they are acceptable at certain online merchants, though.

I buy Prezzy cards here in New Zealand, which act as Visa credit cards. I've found they can be used on Steam, Amazon, Green Man Gaming and BundleStars so far.

So yes, you will be fine.

I've been buying games from Steam with a single-use Visa gift card, so it should work. Though I'm not sure about other brands of cards.

I've used 3 Visa and 2 American Express ones that I got back from rebates. All worked fine.
