Hey all, I've been having a daily gamenight with a friend of mine and we often find ourselves having difficulties looking for new games to play when we finished one. Seeing there's a Halloween sale going on, perhaps you can help out by giving some suggestions :) (They don't necessarily have to be on sale now though)
We're mostly looking for co-op games, doesn't matter if 'local' (through remote play together) or online, and with some story (so a clear beginning and end, we've tried some roguelikes and such but that's only fun for 1 time to play together).

To give you a better idea what we're looking for:

What we have played and finished:

What we've tried out but didn't really work out:

What we're not looking for:

  • Overcooked
    or similar games
  • Horror (they tolerate Killing Floor but that's not so much jumpy horror)
  • Trine games (they don't like them as much as I do)

What we're gonna try out:

Suggestions from here that we might try out:
A Way Out
Portal 2
Divinity Original Sin games
Biped
Borderlands games
Hammerwatch games
Zombie Army Trilogy
Nuclear Throne
Risk of Rain games
Guacamelee games
Lego games
Gears 5
How to Survive
Satellite Reign
Shadow Warrior 2
Yooka-Laylee games
LARA CROFT AND THE TEMPLE OF OSIRIS
Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light
Tower 57
Indivisible

To thank you for your time reading that and giving suggestions (or you just clicked the link because you read there were GAs inside :p), here are some giveaways for some keys I still had laying around:

+1. Portal 2 was the first game I thought after have red the topic even if its not a full story frame its one of the funniest coop games

+1 on DOS2, it was such an amazing experience with my brother. We played through the game 2.5 times and it did not get stale at all.

Of course, who can forget about Portal! I haven't suggested my friend this one yet, but I should.

DOS2 is also a great recommendation, I'll propose that to my friend as well. He already owns it and Steam says it's available for Remote Play Together so that saves me some money ^^

Thanks for the suggestions, I've tried A Way Out with another friend and will finish with that friend sometime. For It Takes Two, I already mentioned I will play it with someone else than this friend but it's nice to read people are recommending it :)

We laughed to much with Biped with my wife.
And she is not a gamer. So the fuming rage when she did something stupid was not helping a lot...
But still was fun!
We also tried Moving out and had fun!

Thanks! Biped looks like one I can suggest to my friend!
Moving Out is one I've been eyeing, but my friend isn't really keen on those type of games (no Overcooked-type of games)

One of my favorite co-op games in recent years is Unloved. It's an FPS with some roguelike stuff so I don't know if that's really your thing.

Thanks for the suggestion, unfortunately my friend doesn't really like horror. He does like Killing Floor and we've played KF1 for hours but that's less horror (like, no dark spaces and such, know exactly what to expetc, etc.)

Borderlands 2 and the DLC. I played it with my brother and it was a blast!

Love the suggestion, I've played BL1 for like 2 hours in coop with another friend but never resumed after that.

Any particular reason to suggest nr 2 and not the first one?

Its got a much better storyline, more comedy and fun with better graphics and gameplay. The sequel for me is better optimised with improved online/co-op gameplay as well as improved QoL features. Superior overall entertainment!

I played finished and enjoyed all the games you finished. You definitely try Heroes of Hammerwatch. It’s amazing! Avoid the Moon Temple DLC.

Van Helsing was awful. Torchlight II was just okay.

How come your opinion on Van Helsing and Torchlight is that way? I see both of them with very positive reviews in the Steam store.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Van Helsing missions feel very repetitive. The game focuses exclusively on building a specific end-game character build to the detriment of everything else.

Torchlight doesn’t really do anything special. You continue to wander around, kill things, collect items, and then the game suddenly ends. It feels like it should build up to something but doesn’t

We had the repetitiveness with Victor Vran as well, and missed the character build stuff in there, so I think we'll manage then :)

I would suggest either Borderland or Monster Hunter. Outside of that, maybe Terraria and Stardew Valley.

Permalink

Comment has been collapsed.

Yeah because of a comment earlier up here I already added Borderlands to the list :)

Monster Hunter they already put so much time in that they are way ahead of me, and not feeling like doing all that over again. Stardew I prefer playing alone, and they already played so much with someone else they got a bit burned out on that one. Terraria I could absolutely not enjoy :(

But thanks for your suggestions! If we didn't already have so many hours in those, I'm sure they'd have been on the list as well :)

Halo: Master Chief Collection is perfect for co-op play. I think it will be on sale this winter, on summer sale it was -50%, and for that price it is just a steal.

Seeing the master chief collection is essentially just all Halo games together, are they all available for coop or just a select few?

BTW you can also check Alien: Colonial Marines. The game received a huge mass of negativity at the start, because it was to be honest unfinished, but all the problems were fixed long ago by patches and dlcs, but many people remember only the negative. But in vain, the game is really good, it has a story co-op (2-4 players), and it usually costs a penny on sales.

Zombie Army Trilogy (from the Strange Brigade studio), Nuclear Throne, Risk of Rain 1 & 2.

Comment has been collapsed.

Though Zombie Army Trilogy looks to be horror(ish) (which my friend doesn't really like), it looks quite alright to suggest to them, along with Left 4 Dead.
Nuclear Throne makes me think of Enter the Gungeon, which we recently tried but will keep it at that, is it indeed a bit like EtG?
Since the storepages of RoR games mention roguelike quite a bit, how far can one go in one playthrough, and is it fun to keep on starting over? We kind of left the roguelikes aside as it's fun for only one evening to play together

I don't recommend Risk of Rain 1 then, It's a real hard game and you probably skip It fast. The second one has the advantage of being open world and the replayability seems to be way better but still a hard game, you just don't get stuck somewhere as in the first. Keep in mind that I've only played the first one but RoR2 It's on my top 5 most wanted.
I had a blast with Nuclear Throne vía Parsec for co-op, at some point I think It was 90% discount because of the anniversary. Simple but fun. Havent played Enter the Gungeon.
And about ZAT, It has an amazing atmosphere, I feel like your friend would only have trouble with the kamikaze zombies, and It's a plus to have some adrenaline playing this title imo.

Dungeons & Dragons Online is a nice choice, and they are currently giving away all standard quest packs for free with the in-store code "DDOQUESTS2021". Further, the quests for three expansions are on sale for only 99 store points per expack. It is quite easy to earn enough store points on a new account by completing at least one quest on each of 8 servers at elite difficulty (one can often find existing players willing to help with a points grind).

As for a clear beginning and end, that much is true for individual quests and for quest chains.

I mean, I've played WoW and my friend still does, so questing is also an option. Does DDO without any of the purchasable quest packs have enough quests? I don't want a game to become an endless money pit for us xD

X-Morph was fun in solo, try it in coop (only local).
If you aren't limited to top-down or side-scrollers (judging by the list you provided), try these:
Resident Evil 5-6
Gears 5
For Honor
How to Survive
Livelock
Helldivers
Portal 2
Satellite Reign
Shadow Warrior 2
We Were Here
Yooka-Laylee.
Aragami
Divinity Original Sin 1-2
Wasteland 3

Aw man, I have a couple of these already sitting in my library but Steam never bothered to add to their storepage that they do have the option of (local) coop so they never showed up when I applied filters. Thanks for the list, there are a few interesting ones on there for sure!

Guacamelee 2 (1 doesnt have coop)
Trine, the entire franchise (theres 4)
Lara Croft (guardian of light and temple of osiris), both titles i had a lot of fun with neat coop

Tower 57 (maybe)
*its very retro but addictive and challenging, bunch of builds and 6 very different characters. i finished it twice alone but its really made for co-op
but i can only safe recommend for fans of 16-bit era games, arcade shooters and the like

Divinity Original Sin (1 and maybe 2)
I think 2 also have co-op. Its turn-based rpg, but with amazing and fun story, co-op actually plays in the story (and you can dispute what to talk or decide, or talk over one another just like in a tabletop rpg)...
I mean, its pretty much the only full fledged rpg that can be played in co-op proper, and one of the highest rated and praised rpgs besides that

unsure(i havent checked if the co-op sucks but are great games):
-Dungeon Siege 3 (arpg)
-Indivisible

Discount:
Sacred 3 (arpg)
One of the weaker ones but its the couchest coop of couchest coop arpgs
probably more shallow and shorter then most but on a discount i think it would be worth it

On the store page for Guacamelee! Super Turbo Championship Edition I do see mentioned in description that the game has "Drop in/out 4-Player local co-operative play", is that then different coop (like non-story, just 2vBoss or so) from what I'm looking for?

Apparently Steam also didn't bother to add the (local) coop tag to Lara Croft because if I had known my already owned games have the option... Thanks for that suggestion!

Tower 57 seems to have a lot of negative reviews, how's that so? It looks pretty decent from the store page.

DOS is on the list now due to some recommendations here :)

In what way is Indivisible coop? I cannot find anything about the coop part of that game on the store page, other than the Steam tags applied.

And ouch, the negative reviews on Sacred 3.. Is that because it didn't live up to its name?

indivisible co-op:
indivisible

Tower 57 was one of those kickstarters that didnt match expectations and-or promises.
Aparently it launched full of bugs as well and took awhile to fix then.
And its a bit short.
I dont remenber how long it took me to beat it but for me it was on the longer side (i explored for secrets and such)
I think i experienced just 1 bug but it was fixable on reload
Difficulty is a bit iffy, for some its on the easier side, for others on the hard side. I wonder how much it have to do with the troubled launch and updates since balance was one of the things that changed on updates.
I breezed in some parts on some builds, i died a bunch on others (but felt rewarding). some difficulty spikes and the later parts get challenging- and some characters are easier to cheese and such

And yes, Sacred 3 haven nothing to do with sacred.
The game is simple and shallow but i found it to be the kind of mindless arcade co-op i like (mind you i like beat n ups on couch).
The problem mainly comes that the franchise was rpg/action-rpg, and in turn theres no proper loot and progress, linear leves... its more like a simple arcade beat n up in action-rpg controls

Reminds of the recent anouncement(and cancelation/hold) on a battle royale 'tom clancy' game.
Even without any details on the game, wich could be fun idk, the trailer alone was thumbed down into oblivion because battle royale is the opposite of the spirit of the franchise. Same with sacred.

If it had any other name it would be mostly positive im sure.

Point is: the few times i have gamer friends over and we go couch co-op it was fine. Not mindblowing but not boring or bad either. We didnt play it for long (beer, people wanting to try other titles, etc) but seemed nice enough for a full playthrough. Its one i wouldve try to beat with someone if i had a partner for the long haul

I have not played it myself, still on the top of my wishlist waiting for a discount or an excuse to buy at 10-17% discount (17% seems to be best ever, 10% is current), but I have seen my friend streaming his sessions with friends (unfortunately, in Polish) and it seems a lot of fan.

Probably not in vanilla, but it's one of the games "made to be modded", exactly like the Stardew Valley. From what I've seen on YT/Twitch, it works fine, though probably with a mod - more about this here . Hakimodo's streams are in Polish, but I'm pretty sure, that he will tell you more, if you PM him on Steam.

You should play It Takes Two as soon as possible (don't sit on it), it's one of the best coop game i've ever seen, period. Just too good and a no brainer for anyone looking for coop.

I'm a huge fan of Borderlands and Trine series but even then, objectively speaking, i'd recommend It Takes Two over them.

That being said, here's a few more recs :

  • Risk of Rain 2 If you don't mind rewarding difficulty and die&retry approach, you'll LOVE this game. So satisfying to play, with so many "builds" to discover and so many secrets to find. Many characters to unlock with a very distinctive gameplay for each one of them. An absolute classic of coop gaming IMO.

  • Human Fall Flat Simple and fun game based on physics. If you like to troll your friend, then this is for you.

  • Operation Tango Short but fun game, heavily based on communications. If you don't use vocal com you can skip this game, otherwise it's a very nice experience in coop IMO.

  • Assault Android Cactus Excellent and underrated twin stick shooter. Pretty cool for a few nights when you want to shoot at everything with some strategies involved.

  • Lost Ark Since you guys seems to enjoy ARPG, i've to mention this game. It's not the typical hack'n'slash game like the ones you mentionned but it has some aspect of it. It's mainly an MMORPG with a topdown view like your traditionnal ARPG. So if time comsuming games isn't your thing you can skip it right there. However, if you're curious about it, this game is absolutely worth giving a look even tho it's not released yet (closed beta on november 4th). I'm a huge fan of HNS games, and let me tell you, this game core gameplay destroys every single games i've played so far, including all the HNS games mentionned in this thread. Oh and it will be F2P, so take a look at it at least.

Then there 's a few others games like Roboquest or Deep Rock Galactic that i can't vouch for it since i haven't tried those yet, but they're high on my to-do list and looks like a lot of fun, so why not.

I always had the idea that Human Fall Flat was some sandbox type of game, or does it have some story/level progression?

Operation Tango is one I have apparently seen in my discovery queue and put on the list, but I'll put it higher up now :)

I'll take a closer look at the others, thanks for the suggestions!
